What People are saying

stay in room 201

parisdublin2013on 12/07/2017 17:53

room 201 at this charming 17-room inn is airy, light-filled (four huge windows overlooking historic savannah), with a luxe king-sized bed, comfy couch and four armchairs, fireplace, and hardwood floors. serene and quiet, it's a lovely respite from a day of exploring this gorgeous downtown. and the innkeepers are courteous, informed, and helpful.

I'd stay again for sure, but would change my expectations

This hotel is different in that you don't just book a "king room" or "queen room." You book by the room number you want. So do some research, look at photos and choose the room you like the most. My husband and I stayed here for four nights in room 302. We had friends also traveling with us that stayed in room 303, just above us. I had so many questions prior to checking in here, so I hope to give readers a little insight into this charming place. Room 302 is a beautiful room located in a three-story townhouse just across the street and a block down from the main hotel building. We felt no inconvenience staying in an annex of sorts from the main building. It only took a minute to walk to breakfast each morning.
Speaking of breakfast, I had no idea what to expect. The reservations boasted a continental breakfast, but I felt it was a step above that. Each morning there were muffins, croissants, bagels, bread, danishes, fruit, yogurt, cereal, muffin-sized frittatas, coffee, milk and orange juice. Breakfast was served from 8:30-10:30 (and not a minute sooner, lol). We were very pleased with the offerings.
Upon check-in, we were each given a coupon for a free drink in the tavern...an unexpected surprise. The tavern ranged from standing room only to nearly empty. It looks as though a few tour groups would come and go...perhaps that was the busy times.
The staff could not have been nicer in my opinion. Grumpy--who I've seen mentioned in several reviews--is anything but grumpy. He oozes kindness and Southern hospitality. I hope you get to meet him. He's awesome.
Room 302 was very clean and quite spacious. The thermostat had to fight against 97 degree heat with 89% humidity, so I'd say it worked quite well considering that. We stayed cool at night, but we did bring a small room fan to help move some air around. I will say that we would have appreciated at least one, if not two extra towels. One day, they forgot to replace one of our towels as well as the floor mat towel. I know it was an innocent oversight, but it made a big difference. Especially since we didn't realize it until we got back to our rooms at nearly 11:00 at night -- which was after the staff had left. The bathroom was AMAZING, and truth be told, it was the bathroom that hooked me into the reservation. The garden tub has room for two, and if you're feeling brave, there's a door across from the tub that looks out onto a balcony and the view behind the townhouse. The separate shower also had room for two and a steam option. The toilet was off to the side, and felt very private. The sink was awesome...plenty of counter space AND drawers. Hairdryer was provided, as were real glasses and a dedicated red washcloth for removing makeup. The only negative about the bathroom was that the garden tub jets ARE LOUD!!! I only used them about three minutes because I was concerned it was disturbing the neighbors. My fears were confirmed when we heard our friends on the floor above us using their jets the next day. We could also hear the tub filling. You would think in a home built in the 1870's, the floors would be creaky, and the walls thin, but we found everything to be very solid, and the tub noise is all we ever heard from any neighbors below, above or beside us.
Rooms 301 and 302 have their own parking spaces dedicated behind the townhouse, but the space is TIGHT, so beware of that if you're driving a monster SUV. Room 303 parks in the regular parking lot at the main building. Parking was not a problem for our friends who had to use the main parking lot.
Our room included access to a sitting room just across a small stair landing. Room 301 also has a sitting room available on the 1st floor. Room 303 has the whole floor locked up, including an exclusive sitting room. Technically, all three rooms have access to the bottom two floor sitting rooms, but I have no idea why people would wander from their own floors to sit on another level. You'll get a REAL key to open the front door of the townhouse (it locks automatically) as well as your room (which you'll have to lock).
A few cons to the room, and the reason I'd have to change expectations:
The staff seems to be only available from 8:30am-10pm. However, if you let them know you need to arrive after 10pm, someone will wait for you. This is a problem if you need someone later than 10:00. There are no phones in the rooms for 301-303. So if you need to call the hotel, you'll have to use your cell phone, or walk over (if it's not too late). Guests staying in the main building are apparently given a key to enter after hours, but that wasn't available to us. There are VERY FEW electrical outlets in room 302. This was a problem for us because we wanted to charge our phones at night, but there were no outlets near the bed, except the ones the lamps were plugged into. There was one under the one window, but that was a bit inconvenient for using our phone as an alarm clock. I also travel with medical equipment that must be plugged up at night at my bedside, so that was challenging. There was another outlet across the room by the coffee maker. The bathroom had at least four outlets though, so that was helpful. I'd recommend bringing an extension cord (or two) unless your phone has an extremely long cord. Two free bottles of water were already in our room when we arrived. We brought extra, and found the fridge to be quite convenient, however, even at it's coldest setting, it never truly got cold...just cool. We used the coffee mugs for soda we'd brought because there were no disposable plastic cups like you see in most regular hotels. This was fine, except they didn't clean them; we had to do it ourselves. Also, there's no ice maker in the townhouse, but you can take your ice bucket to the tavern to get ice. On a side note, we didn't notice that there was an envelope to leave housekeeping tips until the morning we were leaving. It just looked like a room survey to us. We felt bad because we were at the end of our trip and didn't have any appropriate cash to leave. If that matters to you, take a look on the dresser for it. The free wi-fi was sketchy at best, non-existent for the most part. Although we did mention it, and they did say they'd have someone look into it, it was never solved.
Last thing... I won't get into the whole thing, because the hotel made it right after several phone calls and insistence on our part. But there was a mix-up with our reservation that we made on a third party website nearly 10 months in advance. We very nearly didn't get to stay in our chosen room...in fact, we almost didn't get to stay in the hotel at all. In the end, the manager acquiesced and gave us the room from our original reservation. Since we did get our chosen room, that means someone else was disappointed. I only mention this, not to put the hotel in a bad light, but because I don't want anyone else to find out three days before their vacation that they don't have a room. So do yourself a favor, after you book--especially if you book late at night--call the inn and confirm they have your reservation. Not the site you used to book...call the inn itself and have them confirm. It never occurred to us to do that since we had our online reservation confirmed with the website, and it very nearly cost us our room.
All in all, folks, I'd stay here again for sure. The location is great. It's convenient to everything in historic Savannah without being in the hustle of the busiest streets. If we get a chance, we'll stay here again for sure....but we'll bring those extension cords!!! :)

Wouldn't stay there twice

The restaurant and check-in area was interesting and quaint. The first shift staff were super nice and helpful. The continental breakfast was very nice. However, the rooms were subpar. The bathroom was not in good shape with a dingy shower and walls. Didn't feel clean even though it probably was. The air conditioner was super loud. The carpet needs to be replaced. We were in a bottom level room and could hear every movement that the people above us made. Furthermore, we couldn't get the room dark enough due to the funky window to the lighted hall. It was one of the worst nights I've spent at a place of lodging ever. My family of three left tired and grumpy the next day and it wasn't because of a ghost. We were glad we only had a stay of one night. I'm sad to have to give the place a less than glowing review because we really loved the staff.

Historic and Beautiful, great location!

17 Hundred 90 Inn may have just become my favorite place to stay in Savannah. Yes, the building and rooms are older, but not 1970s old - we are talking beautiful, historically old. The location is perfect - in the middle of the historic district and close to Colonial Cemetery. Included with your stay is parking, as well as a delicious breakfast in the Inn before it opens for the day. It's hard to stay at the 1790 Inn, as it books fast, so try to get your reservations in as soon as possible. Also, swing by their bar - their Flu Shots are like a bite size bloody mary! Planning to go back again and again!

Absolutely charming!

We booked this hotel as it is close to the centre of Savannah and because of the history of the place. We were welcomed by Gillian - what a lovely lady and the perfect host. We were shown to our room by 'Grumpy' (who really isn't - sorry!). We were allocated room 201 - what a lovely large room. The furniture is old fashioned and is more homely than luxury.

We stayed for 2 nights. The bar is fab - I can highly recommend the Key Lime shots. We didn't eat in at the restaurant but from overheard conversations it sounds fab! The breakfast was amazing - definitely indulge!

We both said as we were leaving that we would gladly stay at the hotel again and can't recommend it highly enough.
