Better Than Expected
MLW2013on 05/08/2017 01:42We booked the 7 Gables because it was about the only place left in Fairbanks less $150/night when we needed to be there. We booked on Expedia and were expecting a motel, but 7 Gables turns out to be much closer to a B&B.
The week beforehand I started getting nervous as I began reading reviews; but it was too late to do anything different. Then we arrived and I really started to worry - the main building is fronted with a greenhouse, which makes sense for Fairbanks, but creates less than an auspicious first impression. The walk through the greenhouse is a little creepy and most of the house is quite dark (gable windows are too small to let in much light!).
Our room was on the third floor of the main building which once was apparently a very large single family home, presumably built in the 1970's when architecture was sometimes interesting (ie, functional but unappealing to today's buyer). Our room was smallish but acceptable; the only major drawback was the slanted ceiling necessitated by the gable. I'm fairly tall, and bumped my head getting out of bed and again when I was making the bed - and finally learned to pay more attention!
Housekeeping wasn't immaculate, but nothing was horrendously dirty.
Breakfast in the common dining room was probably the highlight of our stay. The owner (?) has hundreds of cookbooks and must use all of them; breakfast was different each of the three mornings we were there. All were quite good.
There is also a large library on the third floor if you are out of reading material.
All in all, a great value for the price. We will certainly keep this place in mind for future visits to Fairbanks.
Super-funky....but good value! And NICE owners.
Katharine Don 03/08/2017 21:04Our building looked more like a religious institution, but the room was good, if funky, and the shower was excellent. Ours was one of several buildings, not all in the same location. The breakfasts were delicious (bought her cookbook). Loved our hosts, Leicha & Paul. Very friendly.
Family vacation spot
Julie Won 21/07/2017 13:50We found this B and B quite wonderful. The rooms are spacious, the breakfast was delicious and plentiful, and we never even locked our door. The inn has canoes, life jackets and paddles you can use (for free). We took a delightful canoe along the Chena River which is 1 block away. We will definitely stay here again on our frequent trips to Fairbanks. We were traveling with family and had 2 rooms, both with hot tubs.
Disorganized / rude / dirty
mike_lakeguyon 18/10/2016 19:39Planned a two-week trip to Alaska stayed in seven different bed and breakfast this was the only one that I would not return to.
Upon checkin was met by a woman ask me what I wanted. She said all have to get the boss and he could not find out paperwork after about 15 minutes of looking he came up with it and then told us that we did not plan our trip wisely because we were only going to spend one day in Fairbanks. And we would regret writing on the Alaskan train that it was the slowest boring 12 hours that we would have planned
I'm actually would not recommend this bed and breakfast for another person to use
Worst place of our trip
MoodyMtnMEon 17/10/2016 00:17Wow....it appears that the reviews are all over the map....here is why....there are multiple locations managed under this "management". We did not have access to Internet to check out these reviews prior to our reservation which was made the afternoon of our stay. We were on our way back from the China Hot Springs and it was raining so we headed to Fairbanks for a place to overnight. Called this place and was told yes there was availability ..suite with a kitchen...found the location...but on the way there we saw a place with scaffolding up behind the NAPA store and joked how that was probably the place...haha....we were thrilled as we turned down a quiet side street ( as we are light sleepers) and went to check in.....alas...things were not as they seemed. We were indeed sent back to the complex with the scaffolding to check into our suite. Ugh. We went to our suite and heard people talking in the room. Called management to confirm it was our room...yup! So....we opened the door to room 7 and there were people already there! Wow! Called management, the wife came right over and gave us a different key to a different room ( one without previous occupants). Not good....
Downstairs seems to be long term residents...shaky at best. Night did not get any better...young men outside our window setup shop....drinking and carrying on...had to call management (it was late) but to no avail. Called two times...loud late and then loud early..I have nothing good to say about our stay here.
