The major attraction is the Volga delta. But May is out od season. Coming here in May, you will most likely be the only participant on an excursion and you are not sure to have an English-speaking guide. I payed 7500 Rubles for a day trip with lunch, a driver and a boatman. No English. If you come in August, the lotus flowers will bloom.
In Russia, outside Moscow, travelling is cheap.
