What People are saying

Looking sad.

dennis pon 04/08/2017 20:27

Probably nice once but now desperate for a refurb and a good clean. En-suite ok if like me u are not big but there's no soap in any rooms!!!!! Shower head never been cleaned, label still on toilet from when replaced, carpet not very clean, I was thinking it ok for one night but probably not. On the plus side nice breakfast.

Not to be recommended

First of all, it was very hard to find the hotel, which is more of a B&B than a full hotel. There is no corresponding house number in any of my navigation systems and when I called to ask for directions, I received a, in my opinion, condescending and inappropriate response (where I was and what on earth I was doing there... I should use a different address: "Roman Walk").

So I drove to Roman Walk, but the hotel was not visible from there either. I had to call again, to which I was told I had turn to the right at the fork of the road and then to look out for a big white caravan on the right. Great. When I finally arrived, the man at the front desk was unsure if it was really my booking, which I was asking for, since only the second part of my double barrelled, germanic name, was on the reservation. I had a feeling that he would have been quite happy if I had just not turned up that evening.

He sent me down the corridor and followed me to the room, where he explained to me that the lady who inhabited the room before me had tore down the window curtains and it was too late to have them fixed. And he would only tomorrow be able to move into "a nicer" room.

The window was open (outdoor temperature 14 degrees), which meant the room was freezing. I asked him to close the window please, which he did reluctantly, grumbling something about "2 knee replacements".

The room was dirty. There were stains on the bed sheets, streaks of dust along the walls, there were stains on the carpet, the silicon along the shower door was hanging off, there was a huge wet stain in front of the bath room and it didn't smell pleasant.

I managed, through no help of the hotel, to use the remaining part of the curtain clamping between the wardrobe and the wall to cover most of the window. That way the pedestrians (ground level room, passage from the parking to the entrance) won't have direct view into my room.

The WiFi was not really working in that room, I had to walk to the breakfast room to get a signal.

The following day I received the "nicer room". I asked in the morning for all windows to be closed in that room, which I was assured would be the case. However, when I arrived back in the evening, the window in the bathroom was again open. When I tried to close it myself, I realised why this was the case: it was broken and could not be closed. The door to the bathroom was broken as well, which means I couldn't close that either. Once again: the room was freezing. Also this room was not really clean, however, it was slightly cleaner than the first one.

The (second) room was located towards the street and therefore quite noisy (especially due to the bad insulation). The first one could have been quieter if it wasn't next to the breakfast room, where guests talked louldy till half past eleven in the night while waiting for their taxi. And if it wasn't next to the passage where the same guests would talk loudly when they returned to the hotel at half past four in the morning.

The breakfast on the other hand was rich and good and the lady who served it was really friendly.

Nevertheless and even with all best intentions, this hotel can NOT be recommended.

Friendly

The A4 hotel does not price itself as a top notch hotel so don't go there expecting it to be top notch. However, the people running the place were very friendly and helpful. The room was basic with worn décor but it was very clean and everything you needed was there (towels, TV, ability to make a hot drink). I was there for a stag do so the breakfast was not an experience I can tell you about. However, if I go to Bristol again I will be happy to use the A4 Hotel.

A fairly basic B and B

This will teach me to do my research. Book this hotel for work. Arrived after 7pm following a long hot day in the car. No parking..only 4 spaces at the rear of building. Had to park in the next road. No evening food available so had to go out again to a pub nearby.
Single room with a shower room so small I kept hitting my arm on the towel rail when I needed the toilet.
It's cheap so if you're on a tight budget you could consider it.
Breakfast was simple. No Mushrooms, cheap bread and yoghurt were out of date.

Fantastic breakfast

The breakfast and friendly staff brought the general standard of this hotel up. Room was very basic. No wifi in room , which was also known but nit communicated to me before my complaint.
Shower did not drain and did not appear to be a new problem. Not very hygienic be use of this . Old drainage came into tray
