Average hostel pay for what you get

stayed for 2 nights at the ao hostel in dusseldorf in a dorm for 6 for 6 of us. the beds basically consisted of 3 bunks for 2 people. the bunks had rubber mattresses and one large pillow and a single thin duvet with no sheet on the rubber mattress so you basically had to sleep on the thin duvet to cover the sticky rubber mattress.
If all you want is a room to sleep in and shower (which we did) this place is passable. but don't expect any frills because you wont get any.
I previously stayed at the ao in Hamburg and found it much better. That said if you are on a budget and want to see Dusseldorf it is in the city centre and within reasonable walking distances of Alstadt (old town) and the riverside (Rhine) so if budget is what you want this place is an option.

Money stolen by hostel

£1300 was taken from my account for a stay that I cancelled. Only £1250 was refunded. Money still missing from account and unresolved. Christin Fehrmann from the company has been unsympathetic and unhelpful. A terrible company to deal with.

3 stars is 'average', seems accurate

Firstly, the location says 'Hauptbahnhof'. I think that a lot of German hotels and hostels have a loose understanding of what it means to be called 'Hauptbahnhof'. It's not a long, long way but it is about 1km and the quickest route takes you through one of the rougher bits of Dusseldorf. Take a tram if you can.

Very basic as A&O always are. Put your own sheets on, take them off when you leave, decent enough shower, windows that opened fully By far the most no-frills hostel I stayed in on my long trip. If you can stay in a Meininger instead they tend to be a bit nicer.

A decent no frills budget hotel.

The hotel was exactly what it said it was. It offered Hostel quality accommodation within the privacy of hotel rooms. It was clean, comfortable enough and very well priced. We stayed for three nights with a family of four for less than 175 euro. You cant get much cheaper than that.
The communal areas were well kept and comfortable and there was a bar that served a decent selection of drinks and snacks.
The areas of Dusseldorf we were interested in were an easy 10 minute walk away, as was the train station so the hotel was well situated without being slap bang in the middle of town.

The only complaint we had, and this will sound a bit daft but did cause an annoying problem, was the light switch that was situated just above mattress height on the bottom bunk. Every time our daughter moved she switched the lights on! Sudden bright light doesn't usually help me get a good nights sleep and this time was no different. It just seemed a strange place for a light switch.

Good hostel/hotel with great location

I traveled alone, and didn't want to spend too much money in a hotel room. That is why I chose hostel/hotel which offers single rooms for a affordable price.

And I didn't get disappointed! I was positively surprised by tidiness of my single room. So clean and comfortable. And room was so quiet and peaceful by night. Room was situated in a 6th floor, so noise from street didn't emanate so much.

Location was also good for me, short walking distance from train station, and just few tram stops from city center.

On the first morning I ate breakfast on confectionery nearby. On the second morning I had a breakfast at the hotel, and it was very convenient.
