What People are saying

Stay in this hotel for the full, unforgettable, Montserrat experience!

The hotel was lovely. On arrival, we were able to bring our car to the front door to unload our suitcases before parking at the public parking space outside. We slept with the windows open and actually enjoyed the bells in the background during the night. We had both dinner and breakfast at the hotel and enjoyed both.
But most importantly, staying at the hotel enabled us a much more relaxed and fulsome experience at Montserrat. We arrived early afternoon and after checking in we did the 4-hour very beautiful hike to Sant Jeroni and back. After showering in our rooms, we could walk around in the now almost completely empty grounds, as all tour buses etc. leave by 6pm. We then spent about 5 minutes (instead of 1+ hour) in line to see the Black Madonna, and afterwards leisurely explored the Basilica. The following morning we attended the 7:30 service at the basilica with the monks, what a magical experience even for non-religious people like us! After breakfast we visited the interactive exhibition at the audiovisual room, which was very interesting, and still without any crowds.
Overall, helped by the stay at the Abat Cisneros, our visit to Monserrat has a been a really special experience which will stay with us for many years to come.

Great Views

We stayed here for 1 night.Coming up from Barcelona on the Train and then the Rack Train.Check in was easy.Room was clean. We had a Front of house Room with Stunning views. There were no Tea/Coffee facilities in the room.We had planned ahead and brought a Travel kettle and Coffee. We enjoyed the Experience at this hotel. We had a Meal in the Restaurant and Had Breakfast included in our tarriff. As others have said the Bells ring all night. We kept our Window open to allow Fresh Cooler air in.Breakfast was good with Quite a Good Selection. After Breakfast we walked to the Black Madonna before the tourists arrived. It quietens Down in the Evening when all of the Day tourists go home.We could walk around and really Enjoy the area.
The Funicular to the Black Madonna closes early.Although the other one which takes you up closes abit later. We took that one and had some stunning views.

Superb service & Views

We found this hotel to be in a fabulous location right beside the Monastery. It was beautifully decorated and very clean. The staff were very friendly. Our room was very clean, pleasant and spacious and the view from our front of house room was stunning. I knew there was no air conditioning in the room and didn't really think it would be a problem! That was until the evening & during the night when it was very hot. We opened the windows but had to close them as the bells from the monastery ring on the hour, every hour and during the night. This was very disappointing and slightly ruined our stay due to lack of sleep from the bells tolling all night. The restaurant was beautiful and the food was excellent. Overall a beautiful place if you can bear the bells.

Traveller's delight...

We took the rack railway up from Monistrol, which must rank as one of the most spectacular ways to arrive at any hotel anywhere in the world. The hotel itself has stunning views from the front rooms and staying there is serene as the village and abbey fall quiet in the evening and early morning. Our table d'hote dinner was truly superb with a great, local wine list and served in a beautiful stone arched dining room. We found the reception and dining room staff helpful and friendly; as ever, a little of the local language goes a long way. On the downside, breakfast was chaotic, the rooms are simple with no aircon and the bells do ring throughout the night, but sink a bottle of wine, throw the shutters open, soak in the mountain air and be rewarded by a truly unique location and experience.

Disappointing!!

There were certain things that we knew about staying at this hotel after reading previous reviews. We knew that there was no air conditioning and that we would be able to hear the bells from the monastery through the night and we were happy to accept both of these.
The pro's for the hotel were the location and the view from the bedroom window (room 208) was stunning, but I'm afraid that is where it stops.
The con's far outweigh these. The room had a fusty smell, no tea and coffee making facilities and the safe didn't work. The staff were surley and the waiter who served our evening meal was downright rude. The food was luke warm (I had pasta and my sister had the soup), we decided to leave it there!! The breakfast on the first morning was served in the restaurant where we had our evening meal. There was very little choice, no cereal, no bread of any kind, No toaster. There was bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs, but no hot plate. They just sat congealing on dishes sat on a table and were cold. There were some pastries, but no tongues to serve them, people were having to use their hands to pick them up from the trays.
The second day, breakfast was served in a different dining room that did have some equipment. There was bread and a toaster and the cooked breakfast was kept under heated lamps, there were even tongues for the pastries, but the choice still left a lot to be desired.
The second day we bought salads and sandwiches from the cafeteria for our evening meal.
We sat overlooking the square in the evening and had a couple of beers from the hotel bar. The bar wasn't staffed, waiters from the dinning room ran down to the bar to serve when they eventually noticed there were people waiting.
On a general note, our room faced the square and had a fabulous view but there were rooms that faced the cliff wall (which was only a couple of yards from the building). Although we knew about the bells, I hadn't realised that they were every 15 minutes throughout the night!!! 1 'quiet' bell for 15mins past, 2 for 30mins past, 3 for 45mins past. 4 'quiet bells on the hour followed by a loud bell for what ever the hour was, 1 minute later the loud bells sound the hour again, just in case you missed it the first time! It's an insomniacs nightmare.
