What People are saying

Royal Clarence exeter

This hotel sadly was burnt to the ground in October 2016 they will however rebuild this back to its natural state and once again shine along side our beautiful cathedral in Exeter it was a beautiful place to stay and the food was superb

A truly memorable experience

I must strongly disagree with a couple of reviews i have read from 2015 and 2016. Firstly to "wreck of a hotel" i say a beautiful old building lovingly cared for. If this reviewer equates old with wreck i am not sure how they would measure other elements of living in England. Some of the modern chickenshacks that don't grace our skyline are already crumbling. The same reviewer showed us a photo of the large bed and to make a point as to the size had placed a boot on it. The sole was in contact with the cover. Need i say more? Secondly to the gentleman who had the unfortunate experience with front desk staff i would say i sincerely hope this was a singular instance as my welcome in 2012 could not have been warmer though that said i do by no means wish to diminish or dismiss a grave oversight on the part of those staff members. i expect a hotel of this calibre to recruit the right sort of people and to enhance their skills with patrons by further training and rigorous checks to make sure all staff have the right attitude. For myself and my elderly mother, there for my uncle's funeral, Luke and the girls at reception extended themselves beyond the call of duty. An overnight stay saw the dawn of the day of the funeral and my husband and boys were in an interlinking room - all overlooking the glorious cathedral and green. My eldest son, who had travelled direct from University had asked me to pack his black suit and accessories. I had forgotten the cufflinks, he asked what the heck was he going to do now. i explained that if we phoned down to conciege/reception they would remedy the situation. Within 7 minutes a young lady knocked on our door with some of their cord cufflinks that were supplied with their clean uniforms. At the other end of the day my mum and i stayed one more night and ate in the restaurant. We enjoyed a splendid meal with a newly made friend - a resident who was a visiting barrister. Exeter Assizes rule ok!! This stay was a moment out of time for me as i loved the ambiance of the old bones of the building and remember the first floor and the ballroom in the centre, between the sitting room that overlooked the Cathedral, and more rooms to the rear, which if i remember correctly, sported colourful stained glass leaded lights. I wonder if any off these beautiful architectural features survived the fire? Certainly wrought iron decorative elements would have and i so hope Andrew and partners can incorporate them once again into the rebuild. My very best wishes to them for the raising of the phoenix.

Super Hotel with amazing Michelin Star Restaurant!

I love staying in this hotel, conveniently situated on the Cathedral square although it is quite old and can use a make-over. The best treat of all is eating in the Michelin Star Café or fine-dining in the Michelin Star restaurant.

One of Our Favourites

Paul Bon 14/02/2017 18:13

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Clarence a week or so prior to the disastrous fire that destroyed one of our favourite hotels. We visited every year for our anniversary. The staff was amazing, always going out of their way to make sure our visit was special. They'd leave a note welcoming us and congratulating us. They clearly didn't have to,but it's the little things, isn't it?

We were gutted by the loss of the Royal Clarence. It will leave a hole in our year when anniversary time rolls around. We hope the staff are well and that something can be done to rebuild, if not recreate the magic of the Clarence. We'd love to return.

Wedding anniversary

Best_things1952on 12/01/2017 22:10

Me and my partner stayed here for our wedding anniversary. It was fantastic the service and the food were brilliant. It's such a shame what happened to it. Hopefully they will be able to rebuild it to what it used to be
