Good but with some reservations

An important piece of advice when on the way to Il Portone is not to put the post code into the satnav. We had a similar experience to others, as we ended up half-an-hour away from our destination! Instead, make your way directly to Abbateggio, where you will find boards directing you to the farmhouse, which is set in a delightful location with magnificent views. However, we found our particular room rather dark and not as spacious as expected, although double doors led from the bathroom on to a veranda, which certainly gave us a bathroom with a view! Unfortunately, wi-fi didn’t work in our room and we had to go into the main part of the house to use our iPad.

We had perhaps expected too much of the meals, which were not always well balanced and rather lacking in vegetables and salad, which surprised us as the farmhouse has its own gardens. Although red wine was provided to accompany the meal, we weren’t offered the choice of white, which would have been appreciated for our second evening meal. It was, however, very pleasant to sit outside amidst majestic scenery while eating breakfast, where there was a reasonable choice of cold meats, cheese, cakes and biscuits.

Although surrounded by wonderful countryside, it was also a little disappointing that, on leaving the farmhouse, there was no obvious place to take a stroll, apart from walking up the lane that leads from the main road.

We would say that for a rural experience, Il Portene is good for a stay of a couple of nights and as a base for sightseeing.

We stayed only one night on way north but if I could plan again, I would stay longer and also take advantage of the owners offer of an evening meal. Our really large room was elegant. The view of the hills from the patio was delightful and the cries of animals in the distance (in the US I would say coyotes. )

Wonderful Agriturismo!!

We spent 2 nights in this agriturismo and my only complaint would be that it was too short a stay. Our 3 day sojourn did not do this region justice.
We received a warm welcome each day from the wonderful hosts (and their many dogs and cats (all well behaved and very sweet)). Location of the hotel was not too difficult too find, had a little trouble on the 2nd evening when we lost satellite reception but it turned out to be right under our noses. You are right in the mountains, which is fantastic, yet does not take long to drive to the coast. If you are looking for absolute peace and quiet this is the place to be. We headed to breakfast one morning accompanied by the sound of wolves in the distance which was fantastic. The building itself is quite old and tastefully renovated, with a wonderful terrace outside. We stayed in the suite pictured with the four poster bed. I can't remember when I last slept so well. A beautiful stone wall, beamed room, very spacious with a sofa and it's own entrance. Underfloor heating in the room and bathroom made this very cosy indeed, as was a little chilly this October. Dinner was a treat each evening as each course was a surprise. Plentiful food, all home cooked and produced on the owners farm, from the meat and cheeses to the olive oil and wine. Lovely home made pasta and fresh meat, plate after plate kept appearing. Perfect if you are on a walking holiday. Breakfast was also plentiful. I would love to stay here again as I'm sure we will be back to this wonderful region.

Quick stop to find my family

We stayed one night at the Argriturismo Il Portone while on a journey to track down my relatives in neighboring town Roccomorice. Nestled in the Abruzzo region this place is perfect to get away from it all. Our hosts were very friendly and the views are breathtaking. We heard wolves howling at night!!! Dinner was very good and breakfast was typical Italian style. We loved our quick stay and if ever in the area will definitely book again.

If you're searching for the best place to stay in Abruzzo, you've just found it!

It's difficult to find somewhere as perfect as this. Beautiful building, beautiful rooms tastefully decorated, warm and friendly hosts and delectable food.

It's also perfectly located, so you can head out to the major attractions from here each day and easily return in the afternoon.

If you're staying in Abruzzo, stay here!
