Delicious goulash
Caroline Don 29/04/2017 05:58We took the "bubble" cable car up and found this place as we walked, so decided to stop for lunch. Amazing views and service (they made mochachinos for us, even when they weren't on the menu.)
The child's meal had real chicken, not packaged nuggets, and my daughter loved it. The three adults had goulash and it was so tasty and filling on a cold day.
The dining rooms are old fashioned but very classy, with a warm heater, but the best is the view out to the other cable car and back across Thalle.
A great find.
Excellent service and location
KCoDenmarkon 10/08/2016 20:23We had a quiet convenient room. Breakfast was excellent and so was the service in general - from reception to the lovely waitresses. The hotel is situated with a great view of the valley and in walking distance to the viewpoint of the Rosstrappe, from where you view into a mini Grand Canyon.
Comfortable hotel, great hospitality
NM Con 20/08/2015 13:14We spent a single night here and were very impressed. The hotel accommodation is very comfortable and well-appointed, the food is good and plentiful, and the reception was really friendly. The dining room is especially nice, being in the style of a traditionoal hunting lodge. There are lots of local walks and activities, cable cars up the mountains, and fabulous historical towns nearby, including Quedlinburg which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The views are absolutely fantastic.
Highly recommended.
OK Hotel - Accomodation Basic
neptuneukon 16/09/2012 10:05The Berghotel Rosstrappe was an initial stop on arrival in the Harz region as part of a holiday with a friend. The first thing to say, if it needs saying, is that this hotel is isolated due to the very nature of it's location. The hotel is located at the top of the Rosstrappe Berg (hence the name) This does mean however you get some great views from the hotels terrace and are only minutes walk from the 'Rosstrappe' and Bode River with some amazing views. You're going to have to taxi from the Town to the hotel if not driving (which we did) which will be about 10 Euro..... if you can find a taxi!
We discovered how hard it was to get a taxi after going down into the town of Thale after checking in, using the chair lift that takes you from the hotel to the town close to the railway station (this however close at 18:00 and costs 1 Euro, and once again you get some good views) We had to actually go to the local taxi drivers house! But Mr Prufer is a really nice guy and whipped us up to the hotel with a smile. A walk back to the hotel would only be for the die hard walker!
Back to the hotel:
On arrival we found locating the reception a little difficult and there didn't seem to be any staff on hand (the hotel guest pack does point out the hotel is being modernised and part of this is the relocation of the reception).
My German is not the best, but I can manage and I certainly made good use of what command of German I had to book in (I say this for those English speaking travellers who are used to fluent English speaking from German hotel staff to get by, English was only spoken by one of the Barmen, but this was fluent! So drinks ordering was easy!)
The staff did make a real effort to communicate though, and seemed happy enough to persevere with us to ensure we fully understood everything we were being told.
The rooms were small and basic, but were clean and tidy. The doors aren't self closing or locking either so you'll need to remember to do this when leaving your room. I personally found the beds too short (I'm 187cm (6' 2")) and uncomfortable by being too hard. I know every one has a different preference for beds so I caveat it by saying 'for me'.
This hotel is really a hill walkers / trekkers stop over. I personally wouldn't want to stay for more than 2 days. Given what we paid elsewhere in this region for hotels, when I compare like for like this hotel is overpriced. We paid 55 euro, but I would say this is a 35-40 euro stay really. The price did include breakfast, but we didn't par-take as we were running late.
There is one really big positive for this hotel..... the food! My friend and I are big eaters and we couldn't finish what was brought to us on any occasion. It was also very well presented and was very tasty. I know that when we were there it was 'end of season' but during the day the restaurant and terraces are packed! Then in the evening it's just the hotel guests and staff, so during our stay was......7. Needless to say the service was great!
There is no internet connection here either, so if you need it... be warned.
Now for credit / debit cards.... The hotel does take cards, which in this area is a rarity. But the connection seemed temperamental so sometimes it worked others not. Ensure you have sufficient cash on you to checkout and for meals etc.
I would stay here again but would use it onnly as a 1 night stop over on a trekking / walking holiday. I would try to find a better price..... or maybe negotiate with the hotel direct on price if your German is sufficient.
brilliant views
Heidikrauton 21/07/2008 09:09Looking at my other reviews I realise that I seem to dwell on breakfasts and this is partly because I think it's a pretty important part of the stay. So, straight into breakfast and it's a very good German breakfast buffet with the emphasis on German - you'll get 4 different types of wurst, for instance. Good juices, teas and a fine selection of breads. Sets you up for walking in this fantastic region.
The hotel's major attraction is that it is at the top of the Rosstrappe with spectacular views across Saxon Anhalt - even beyond Quedlinburg. It's a brilliant base for walking and in the evenings it's fabulous to stroll down to the Rosstrappe and its views across to the Hexentanzplatz and the Bode valley without tripping across the moving wall of tourists that is there during the day. There is free parking and a good bus service to connect you for further walking and there is also a chair lift up and down to Thale (charge applies).
The restaurant serves wonderful food - again pretty German - but there's nothing wrong with a good plateful of Bratkartoffeln after a day's hiking. There are views from the restaurant and when the weather is fine you can eat out on the terrace. They also serve lovely home baked cakes.
The bedrooms are in a separate building to the restaurant and reception area - it's more modern and some of the rooms have views. The rooms are perfectly comfortable although they have only showers and no baths in the en-suite bathrooms .
