Not very cycle friendly, ok rooms

StevieBurnson 11/07/2017 15:17

We were told this was a cycle friendly hotel. It has space for 4 bikes in the cafe! Security was very good. Our room was an adequate size for 3 adults. Breakfast was a decent continental offering. It's a 20-minute walk to the main bars and the Rhine restaurants.

Overpriced, under specified, and a rip off.

I stay in dozens of hotels every year - and this has to be the worst in terms of value for money and 'customer services;. First, though, on the plus side - the breakfast is not bad (7 out of 10) for a 'budget' hotel (at what they tell me is their normal rate of €90 a night). But for the €285 per night I've just been gouged for..? Not so good.

The maid did a good job, too, even tidying up my open suitcase and closing it up. But that's all I can find to say about the place positively. No the bad stuff...

A barely furnished room - bed as hard as stone (and I like a firm bed normally, but this was ridiculous). A bathroom that is tiny with one medium and one small towel that felt like sandpaper. A TV with only a few stations and none in anything other than German language - I don't watch much TV but to have English news from the BBC or CNN is useful. The noise from the street was loud through the night (room faced the street on the second floor - cars and bikes made a row during the night and rubbish collection early in the morning. That, combined with the hard bed, meant for restless nights. For €285 a night...

I was in town for the Interpack exhibition at the Messe - so one expects to pay a premium for an hotel room during this time, but THREE times the 'normal price'?! I was anticipating a 4 star hotel at least for the price charged. At €90 a night I'd have said it was expensive for what you get, but €285..? Robbery. I've stayed in five star hotels for much less.

We had booked four rooms - one colleague injured himself the night before and was unable to travel. I'd not have objected to paying for his room for the first night as he'd not been able to cancel in advance. But we had reserved for two nights. Bearing in mind demand for rooms is high, I had no doubts that they could fill the room for the second night quite easily - even the first night I'm sure they could without too much trouble. But they insisted on charging €285 per night for two nights. Which they charged to another colleague's credit card without his permission!

I decided that if we were going to have to pay for the room then we would do some good with it - I thought we might find a homeless person and give them a night in a room for once. So we asked for the key to the room - to be told they'd sold it to another person! Despite having taken €285 from my colleague's credit card... The receptionist was abrupt and complained that we were stopping her working by insisting on having the key (there was no one else waiting) - but eventually agreed to refund us what they'd let the room for - which was €185. €100 less than we were charged having booked many weeks in advance. I couldn't be bothered to argue any further - so we took the offer. She then told us that if we want to book in future we would have to pay in full in advance... As if there's any chance we'd ever want to go back to stay there! I visit Dusseldorf regularly, but never again will I give this hotel money. I'd rather sleep rough!

I understand supply and demand, but this was gouging people for gouging's sake. Then deceiving us by insinuating the room was unsold, then revealing they'd got another resident when we asked to have the key for the room that we'd paid for. Really bad experience. I don't complain much - I frankly don't have the time and I am never going to complain about something petty - so it's only when I feel really ripped off or receive very bad service and facilities that I'll do so. And I hate doing so. But this was an exceptionally bad experience.

Oh - and one colleague had no water in his shower the first night. Was refunded €70 apparently. So €215 for one night in cheap room with no water...!

Area is very good

Especially if you are interested in closeness to gay pubs. The hotel is close to the main station and the bus terminal. The city itself is not the most interesting and people here are neither friendlier nor more open-minded than anywhere else in Germany.

Only if you must !

We came during the DRUPA conference so the city was full and even though, the hotel was far overrated to what it has to offer. Hotel Location is OK, about 10-15 min walk from the old city where all the shops and restaurants. Parking is across the street for 10 Euro a day and there are more around there. The rooms and bathroom were clean and the one we had was big – but that is all! Towels are old from over use and small. No Shampoo or conditioner. I would recommend to change the pillows and the blankets!!!! They had a bad smell from over usage (and so, I did not use them on my 2nd night at the hotel !) ! The pillows we got when we asked for extra ones should have been thrown out a long time ago!!! I would never keep such in my home, so for sure not in an hotel. As the room was facing the back side of the hotel, and even when we were at the 5th floor, we could smell the cooking and fraying from the restaurants nearby. The rooms are very old decorated and not really as they are on the hotel web site
