What People are saying
Eerily quiet, ghost town like hotel.
Maria Con 24/08/2017 13:27We stayed here on August 16 and17, 2017, the second two nights of our 8-night Swiss Alps adventure. We started in Grindelwald, then went on to Wengen, Murren, and Kandersteg for our final destination. Our room was clean, plenty spacious and had a balcony with a view. It appeared like there were very few guests in the hotel. It seemed like a ghost town. Perhaps because the hotel manager/owner was so unfriendly, and was just plain miserable. I am not sure why she seemed so unhappy, it is almost as if she didn't want to be there. She was short with her responses, had a scour on her face the entire time, never smiled, and quite cranky. Aside from our room, I have to say that the meals were good. Wengen is a charming small town, the manager/owner, not so much.
Owner was unfriendly, acted like we were trying to cheat her, final bill was non-transparent, albeit a fair price
Colin Pon 11/07/2017 20:31We needed an uncomplicated, nothing fancy, over-night stay in the middle of a 2-day point-to-point hike in the Kleine Scheidegg vicinity - hence booked the Alpenruhe in Wengen. Initially my wife, adult daughter and I arrived in the middle of a heavy rain storm, clothes and hiking gear all soaked. Since we didn't feel like heading out again in the rain for dinner, we asked if we could eat in. The hotel *does* serve dinner - but according to the owner - "only for special guests", and said "No". We subsequently booked a second room for 2 further members of our hiking group who could not reach their own accommodation at Moenchjochhutte due to the storm. When settling the bill, we were confused by 3 separate ~similar bills - for 2 rooms. We could not extract any meaningful explanation from the owner, and eventually just paid. To be fair, the price per person was a reasonable deal, but the owner was just not helpful - AND - it wasn't a language problem since we are fluent in German.
Buyer Beware - Poor Experience
Elliot Gon 06/07/2017 12:32We booked this hotel mostly because of the price and boy was that a mistake. Where to begin:
The owner
Very unfriendly and not hospitable. She seemed more focused on her computer than helping the guests. When we asked general questions about the room and area, she was sarcastic and rude in her responses.
The room
Our room was EXTREMELY outdated and smelled musty for the duration of our stay. It gets uncomfortably hot in the room. The owner suggested opening the windows for the fresh air, however when we did that moths and other bugs flew in. What was advertised as a Queen bed was actually just two twin beds pushed together that were not comfortable. Couldn't sleep with a blanket on either as it was 95 degrees in the room.
The location
It is one of the farthest hotels from the train station and ends with a somewhat large uphill climb. Although you can arrange to be picked up from the train station, you'll wind up walking back and up the hill numerous times which can be taxing if you are not in shape or have been hiking all day.
The best and only good thing about this place was the stunning view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
Would not recommend this hotel to anyone. There are far superior hotels in Wengen that are worth the extra money.
Beautiful hotel, disappointing weather
Sue Don 08/05/2017 10:07We had planned for three nights but the rain was as set in and we chose to leave as there seemed little going on in low season. Hotel is very nice although you need to request a long bed if you're over 5'11! Breakfast is included with room rate and is fresh and extensive
Well located Hotel in Wengen
MGPowellon 08/01/2017 17:11I booked this hotel for a short trip with my son skiing in Wengen over Christmas.
I called the hotel when we arrived in Lauterbrunnen before we boarded the train up the mountain. When we arrived at the Wengen station we were greeted by the friendly owner in an electric cart to transport us and our luggage up the hill.
The hotel is in a lovely location at the top end of town and ideal for those skiing in the area.
The rooms are very small but comfortable - not sure what else you would expect for the money in the area.
The views from the hotel are quite simply stunning, so do try and get a room with a view.
The morning continental breakfast was plentiful.
For those looking for a good value, well kept hotel with stunning views in the area I would recommend this place.
If you are looking for large 5 star accommodation then look elsewhere and be prepared to open your wallet.
The staff were very friendly to us during our stay, so I cannot understand the other comments on here.
