What People are saying

overnight stay - to visit real ale train (steam)

Alton house hotel is a great location for the steam train - arrived early afternoon and had lunch in the hotel - restaurant was quiet, however the food was excellent (as was the wine) Our room was clean and tidy but a little tired. The staff were efficient (rather than friendly) and we certainly did not feel valued. The breakfast was a high quality offering albeit a little chaotic - very very busy.

Small room / good breakfast

This was obviously once a fine house. Its conversion to a hotel showed not a lot of imagination. The public areas, corridors and stairways were factory functional. My room was small and also no more than functional, certainly not given to comfort - I was grateful to have arrived late and left after breakfast. The bathroom was VERY small so that it was necessary to close the door in order to access anything. Everything was clean which of course is a most important consideration.
The breakfast room was comfortably furnished. Of the two staff, the young man was very attentive and welcoming, the female member was morose and non-communicative. The breakfast itself was of high quality - a good selection of fresh food in the buffet, and then the waiter seemed prepared to bring any special or different items if required.

Very disappointing

Came here with work friends for a celebration cream tea. We had pre ordered the Russell cream tea which sounded lovely when we read about it on the website . Sadly we were disappointed.
Where do I start? Tea pots plonked unceremoniously on the table with very ordinary cafeteria style cups , scones that tasted like cheap supermarket brands , (they were part cold as though they had just come out of the freezer and part tepid where they had probably been microwaved) unappetising looking jam and cream that wasn't clotted and tasted very synthetic, and then one measly scone each and two left over for the ten of us to fight over . Nobody approached our table after serving us to ask how everything was - we had to ask if we could have more scones !
The newly refurbished dining area looked good but couldn't make up for the poor quality of the food. We all agreed that we wouldn't be rushing back any time soon .

Enjoyable stay here would recommend

We stayed here when we wanted to visit Chessington Adventure Park and Legoland. Both are within a hours drive form here, car is obviously needed.
Rooms were very spacious for the 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 children. The only thing to be aware of is that the family room is out the back above the function room and we had to endure some wedding DJ music on friday and saturday night. It was not the worst but something to be aware of if you are light sleeper. Staff were very helpful. breakfast is perfect and sets you up for the day.

Not a hotel for disabled guests.

Angela Lon 20/07/2017 20:18

The hotel is not disabled friendly. I have osteoarthritis in all joints and problems with my back and neck. I was put on the first floor. There were no rooms on the ground floor. Staff not very accommodating. I struggle to hold the banister with my hands. I felt like I was a prisoner in the bedroom. I was in so much pain when I got to the room. I knew I had to go down for dinner. Stairs again the thought of going down stairs and falling due to my vertigo was scary. I would rather have stayed in my car.
Bedrooms very small bathroom not disabled friendly. I cannot get in a bath so unable to have a wash.
Do not go here if you have mobility problems. Premier inn is so much better and cleaner.
Even though they have been refurbished still looked bland and old looking no imagination in the room..
