The Bates Motel....
Maggitay2014on 12/08/2017 22:29Arrived at this hotel early evening with my friend, and was greeted by Norman Bates himself on reception. Well to clarify, reception was a desk in the middle of the floor and the man was very weird to say the least, unhelpful, and very unwelcoming.
We asked if we could get a drink and we were told they only had beer or wine so we had a beer.
After unpacking, we asked where in the area we could get something to eat, and the man told us there was an Austrian restaurant round the corner. Which corner, I have no idea as we walked for an hour and a half round the roughest area I have ever seen, full of brothels and street walkers, drunks and druggies and finally found an Italian run by an Indian. At this point anything would have done so we settled on a couple of omelettes to be on the safe side.
As previously mentioned, there is no air conditioning at this hotel and the outside temperature was 37 degrees that day. The room was like an oven and the fan did nothing but circulate hot air. There is also no fridge or tea and coffee making facilities. The room itself was disgusting, see pictures below. The toilet and bathroom were dirty, paper coming off the walls, damp growing on the ceiling and the towels were filthy, full of brown marks, before we had even used them. The television was the oldest, biggest tv I have ever seen and took up half the room.
I have to say the breakfast was ok and plenty of it, but we only got that on two days as the hotel had no electric on our second day for over twelve hours from 2200 hrs until after 12.00 noon the next day.
Therefore, in the extreme heat, the fan wasn't working either, no lights and no hot drink or food for breakfast.
We were on a trip staying in Budapest, Prague and Vienna and as a travel agent, I have travelled the world and stayed in hundreds of hotels. However, I can honestly say, this hotel takes the prize for being the worst I've ever stayed in, in over thirty years in travel, and the area makes any slums look like the Ritz.
Whatever you do, avoid this hotel like the plague - one of the worst, if not the worst, hotel experiences I've ever had, and believe me, I've had a few!
I would add that the other two hotels on our trip were fine.
'Interesting'
Janet Gon 04/08/2017 13:16The previous reviews give every kind of comment and in some ways they were all recognisable!
The reception area is an office desk but no less efficient for that. Jonny the dog did' welcome us but we became friends before long. The courtyard garden was sadly peopled with smokers but provided an outside area for a drink. Beer and wine both served by mine host at v reasonable prices.
Our room(s) were huge. A sitting room and a bedroom with red curtains and carpet - both + the heat were more than enough to beat the little domestic fan into submission. Bed comfortable, shower small but efficient and if you are plastered there's a little step to trip you up between the bedroom/lounge and the loo.
We saw no signs of brothel activity but it wasn't an area a single lady might find comfortable - v close to the ATM and the metro/tram into the city centre.
Breakfast was OK. Lots of sweet cake/bread and when some areas are full the spaces between tables can be a challenge!
We enjoyed our stay and the good humour of our host. We would probably stay closer to the city centre next time as we prefer to walk rather that public transport.
If you like quirky this is for you. If not - stick to chain hotels.
Lovely hotel, shame about the location
ArlandPenchanton 24/07/2017 17:25In terms of the hotel itself, this place is great. We had a huge kitschy room on the top floor that was more of an apartment, complete with a corner bath, walk-in cupboards and pillars. The breakfast buffet was excellent and the staff were really friendly. The only downside is that it's pretty far from the centre of town and the area is a bit dodgy at night. We didn't have any problems ourselves (in fact it turns out you can get really cheap drinks in a red light area on a Monday night) but it might be a bit rowdy at the weekend. That said, I think it was worth it as we wouldn't have been able to afford the same standard of hotel closer to the centre of town.
Very nice hotel
aurialaon 13/07/2017 22:41Arrived here last sunday for our citytrip and still very happy (we leave coming saturday). Hotel in old Viena style. Nice and very spacious room for two. Simple but sufficient bathroom and seperate toilet. Great breakfast every day. Close to subway and tram, short walk from railwaystation Westbahnhof. Great for daytrips. Lot of places to eat and enjoy yourself in the evening. Last but not least very nice and helpfull staff 😊👍
Affordable quality, central, direct booking
Carlos_Brito_Suisseon 04/07/2017 11:24I have repeated this hotel 3 times already. It provides a much more spacious accommodation than usual, it is comfortable and of good quality. The décor is indeed in the charming «Old Vienna» style but the hotel has been extensively refurbished. It’s a 2 minute walk from the U-Bahn-Station Gumpendorfer Straße, and therefore just a couple of minutes away from the city center. Sometimes fully-booked during high season, I recommend planning ahead and direct booking. Very good value for money.
Check in : Prompt and efficient often by the owner himself. Staff demonstrate a positive attitude and a willingness to help, anticipating guests needs and showing how to make the most of one’s time in Vienna. Reception staffed at all times during the day but in the evening you need to dial a code to get in.
Rooms : Looking clean and smelling fresh. Prepared with the right temperature in winter, either a standing or a desk fan are available in summer. Bed linen and towels in impeccable condition. Showers working well. Not all rooms have a bath tub, so I recommend asking first.
Breakfast : Is included, and is a buffet. Prompt table service, unobtrusive, polite and courteous staff providing a good standard of customer care and service skills. A good range of
hot and cold items, together with a choice of good quality accompaniments. Examples include preserves, ground and decaffeinated coffee, teas, butters and spreads, as well as a variety of cheeses, ham and eggs. Sekt is also available.
General quality : good intrinsic quality and condition, with a good standard of furniture, furnishings, flooring, fittings and décor. Internal and external noise levels absolutely minimal. Very good structural insulation and a spacious lobby area; a small but pleasant courtyard garden is available for guests during the good season. They also have a vinothèque, but I never tasted their wines.
