Anantara is a brand that we trust and Sanya was a place that we wanted to go to because it provides good weather in April and also because we want to explore new places. The biggest thing you will find out immediately about China, even in Shanghai, is that communicating in English is still close to impossible. Taxi drivers need the address you are going to in Chinese and even hotel staff. It was very difficult to communicate in Anantara Sanya, even when ordering room service (it could take 10-15 minutes for them to find the items). On the positive side, the villa is amazing, a lot of space and total privacy. You don't have to go out, unless you want to. The private pool is beautiful. The common pools look great but we did not try them. The sea is also good, although sometimes dirty outside and restricted in the areas that you can swim. Maybe Anantara and Intercontinental next door should work together a bit to make the beach more attractive. The Thai restaurant had excellent quality food, although it was almost empty. The buffet dinner on Saturday was really good as well. It seems to us that the tourists they get are mostly from China (or even HK), that we were one of the very few foreigners and therefore this Anantara has not geared up to international tourism. The DVD was not working for our own DVDs (probably region 6 only not multiregion and ours was region 2). Supposedly the Business Centre had a selection, but they only had 6-7 of which 1 in English and the rest in Chinese. Another thing to say is that generally China is expensive; maybe the RMB is overvalued because we really could not understand how the locals can exist with these prices (we tried the local supermarket and we did gauge the local pricing). GBPRMB 8.5 seems totally out of kilt, it seemed to us that it should be at least 10 if not more. Another awkward thing is the "pay as you go" system! You keep on making deposits with your credit card and if you run out of credit they chase you to make a new deposit. If you have underspent at checkout, they give you a refund. That's a very strange way of running a luxury hotel, as if we would run out and not pay our bill? The jewel in the crown is the Spa. You HAVE to try it. Excellent treatment, excellent staff, the best massages you will ever get. Anyway, overall an excellent experience and we would go back as the staff in Anantara did their absolute best for us, but be prepared for the fact that this is not an experienced international tourism set-up as something that you would find in Bali for example.

Nice hotel

Good service, good environment！ The food is delicious, the room is clean and sanitary. The bathroom was large and spacious. It is quiet at night. The room was large and spacious. Everything in the hotel is full.

Scuba dive stay

We picked it for location near scuba diving location. It was very nice. Not much to do other than pool and beach but that was a nice break for me who didn't dive. We are vegan, so the menu and buffet was a little challenging, but we managed OK. It was very quiet by the pool and it wasn't until the last day I discovered that they had pool drink service. I wish they came around to serve and take orders outside also.
