What People are saying

A beautiful oasis in the middle of the medina

tsperlingon 27/08/2017 23:59

My husband & I stayed here late July 2017 for 3 nights, wished we were there longer. We are world-wide traveler and SPG Platinum member and very thankful this design hotel is part of SPG. Thank you to the hotel manager and the entire staff for making our stay memorable. This is a small hotel thus each guest receives special attention. Your meals are per request and served anywhere and anytime. We love our traditional Moroccan style suite. Everything was perfect! Not to worry if you don't know how much the dinner costs, we were surprised when we got the bill upon our checkout, it was very reasonable. Note that this hotel is quite exceptional that it is not among other hotels, we particularly like the fact that we are surrounded by other homes. We felt safe walking around and enjoyed speaking with the locals. We really enjoyed the relaxing dinner out on the rooftop while watching the sunset! Indeed a gem within the medina. We hope to come back and visit soon.

Intimate and fantastic

I've never taken the time to review a place before, but that is a testament to this hotel. The riad is intimate and beautiful with the quintessential Moroccan feel. The rooms are exceptional, and there is a lovely courtyard with a plunge pool where you can sit for breakfast every morning. The inside of the riad feels like a retreat away from the chaos outside. The riad is in old medina, so you should be prepared to have donkeys passing you on the streets and watch out for the motorbikes!

What really sets this place apart is the staff. The staff go above and beyond to make sure you feel comfortable and you are enjoying your trip.

We mentioned to the hotel driver our first night that we were having difficulties acquainting ourselves with the city, and he proceeded to drive us all around the city to show us the main landmarks so we could get back to them easily. All of the staff are incredible, and take such care with everything that they do.

This should not be an SPG property

I was very excited to finally come to Marrakech for a few days. I was surprised at how good the airport was, and I was met by a driver that was kindly organised by the property.

As a developing country, you can expect that the roads will be less than perfect. My expectations were exceeded, they were much less than perfect. We drove to the riad and parked a short distance away as the laneways are narrow. It was 41 degrees when I arrived, so the smell of donkey urine and fees was pretty strong as were the industrial solvents being used in nearby workshops.

The property itself, is intimate. Only a handful of guests can be accommodated. It has a beautiful central pool and a high staff to resident ratio. The staff were superficially friendly and obsequious. The check-in is very fast.

The internet was sub-optimal and this frustrated me as I was working with some photos and needed a decent connection.

The room was ok. Flower petals everywhere, which made it very romantic for a single occupant. They provided local snacks for the room. The property had even organised a tour guide for me, as I explained I was a photographer and wanted a knowledgable guide to take me away from the tourist areas so that I could capture local culture. It was the only request I made prior to arrival.

The tour guide was a major problem and coloured my entire experience. If you are the kind of tourist who will love to hear the same story repeated endlessly about Kate Winslett and the movie she did here after Titanic, you may love him. Personally, I do not like being spoken at for hours on end until I can't hear my own thoughts. As a photographer, I do not like being told where to look and what to photograph or having to explain that my Leica didn't have a zoom lens. No doubt he instructs chefs how to cook and his doctor how to practice medicine. After several time of me politely asking him to desist, he paused, only to continue with his emotionally tone-deaf soliloquy.

I also did not like being taken to stores, where I felt like I was held hostage to aggressive sellers who were giving my guide secret commissions. When I confronted the management about this, they explained that small sales do not give commission but that it is routine practice for larger sales. This was supposed to comfort me. This is a blatantly dishonest practice that demonstrates zero integrity.

The evening meals were inedible. The salad was delicious, but the tagines that make Morocco famous, were a failure with both chicken and lamb inedibly over-cooked.

My driver was generally good, until he started talking about Jewish bankers controlling Morocco. There were a number of other deeply antisemitic remarks that made me feel very uncomfortable.

Overall, if you idealise developing countries and can romanticise dishonesty and institutional antisemitism, you will just adore this place.

Simply the best

My Wife and I came to the Anayela to celebrate my fortieth birthday.
We were so glad we had chosen this Riad .
This property truly is an oasis of calm in a city which can be extremely hectic.
As well as a well presented house the staff are amazing, we were made to feel at home immediately.
The manager ( Mehdi) even gave us a Moroccan mobile so we could call local taxis or could call the Riad for help if needed.
In short they went above and beyond 5 star service.
My only regret is that we did not dine in the Ryad however on our next visit we will!

Beautiful, relaxing, romantic, intimate with great views.

Me and my wife had a great time at AnaYela. It's a beautiful property with a unbelievably friendly staff. The food was excellent as was the rooftop and lounge areas. The bathroom is so romantic. The only drawback to the riad is in an area of town that's a little far away from a lot of the souks and the main square.
