What People are saying

Beautiful, personable and dreamily located

Richard Mon 13/05/2017 11:28

I don't normally write reviews, but for Antico Convento I must. The location is superb, up in the hilltop village of Rocca Cilento, below its Norman castle, and with wonderful views from each room's terrace and the main terraces. There's great walking all around. Paolo is a gregarious, perma-smiling host and Concetta just the same, plus a wonderful cook - including using asparagus and mushrooms foraged by Paolo, and as many local Cilento products and recipes as possible. The best elements are the small details: on my first day I asked for some butter with my bread, and didn't eat any tomatoes in the morning; for the next two days, butter appeared without fail, and tomatoes vanished. Such attention to detail and personal care is rare.

Much has been written about the style and decor, so I won't add to it, other than to add my admiration. It's a beautiful house. The wi-fi was a bit patchy, but generally good. Their wine selection is superb.

Downsides are perhaps that Paolo and Concetta speak no English, so you need a sprinkling of Italian to get by. And my room was a little cold by day, although the readily supplied blanket helped.

On the whole, however, Antico Convento (and indeed the Cilento as a whole) was brilliant - and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Paradise over the clouds of Agropoli

Antico Convento is a hidden jewel on the mountains neighboring Agropoli. Paolo and his family are great hosts. Please don't dare to miss the dinner. It was the best value of our whole Italian travels. Almost everything offered was of their own production. Prosciutto, real cheese, homemade bread, their own olive oil..Everything prepared with love and care. The whole village is a relic, and the accomodation a real "Maison d'hotes". The views rooms, stunning. Endless Italian countryside. Breakfast. Another best. Homemade jams and their own honey. More prosciutto and cheese. Infinite good coffee. Fruits. I wish I would have planned to stay more..

Gorgeous!

Amazing views! Lush, green hills, beautiful, quiet little villages. It's nice to get away from the tourists and the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities. Only downside was that it was hard to find. The owners are very kind, and the food is just fantastic! I wish we could spend more time here.

A real gem

This former monastery in the hills of Cilento provides a wonderful ambience in a beautiful setting. Paolo is the most gracious host. He prepared incredibly delicious, varied and thoughtful vegetarian meals for us with fresh local ingredients. We loved our stay here!

If you like adventure, something different from the norm, this is your place.

First I must stress, buy a local map before trying to find this place. It's in Rocca Cilento not Lustria as listed. You can't miss it once you find Rocca Cilento. Finding Rocca Cilento is not easy and not for the faint of heart. Expect some steep narrow roads (paved pathways more like it) lots of super narrow brick "roads" wedged between stone buildings with less than a foot to spare, washouts and men with guns.
I'm trying to scare anyone away but that's what we endured to get there. GPS is at best a guide, Michelin maps was better but they both don't differentiate between proper driving roads and roads for the insane. I love these kind of roads on my dual purpose motorbike, but not so much in a 4 door car with my better half sitting beside me scared to death. One road was torn up for re stoning, one just became too steep, sorry clutch, another had a group of men standing with rifles (turned out to be s group of duck hunters) still scared the @#£% out of us. After 3 more attempts at different routes we finally arrived. If you've ever seen an old B/W Dracula movie, this is here. It was dark and stormy the day we arrived and after all we had been through well we just didn't want to stay. We drove back down to Paestum to the Best Western but they were full. We had dinner, then once calmed down we decided to go back (I saved the route on my GPS)
We were met by a friendly woman, who showed us to our room. The room was large with a nice view, the bathroom was OK with a small shower, but no hot water. The bed was horrible, sorry but it was so hard neither of us got a good sleep. The room was cold at night with no heat but a thick blanket. Breakfast was OK, they served us one egg and some salty bacon, some breads and jam and good coffee. Not the breakfast others raved about. In the morning sunshine the town of Rocca Cilento is beautiful, gone are the vampires, now replaced by friendly bread delivery men and locals hanging laundry.
Our drive down was again a nail biter as a truck got stuck and blocked our way, forcing us into another adventure finding a route down. More dead ends and paths pretending to be roads.

It really is a time warp how they live up here, such an incredible town. Although our adventure wasn't perfect, I do recommend this b&b just so you can experience this wonderful town of Rocca Cilento. I suggest a blindfold for the wife, just for the driving part.
