During summer the Hotel APA puts on one of the largest light displays in the world, making it into the Guinness book of records for the most about of lights in a display. This is just stunning and impressive. There are food stalls there and places to get some drinks, so it is a great night out. We loved it.

bubble era leftover resort offers good value

I stayed here for a weekend night while planning some cycling routes in the nearby hills. The hotel is comprised of a couple of large blocks, stunningly incongruent with the gorgeous surrounding mountain scenery, alongside all the peripherals of a Japanese country club resort, including golf course and wedding chapel (and lover's knot for taking photos of these not yet in need of the chapel).

The drive up is quite long and impressive - there's a lot of land attached. Check-in was standard, efficient, polite, and moderately friendly (as was check-out). The room was fairly standard for non-urban Japan, neutrally decorated and in good condition. I would guess most rooms have great views; ours certainly did, of forests and distant misty mountains. There's a large-ish unit bath with all the usual amenities, wired internet, a kettle and tea... you've seen it all before. We slept well.

The public bath is good, clean and in good condition, with a little outdoor bath (that has a partial roof, so you're bathing in cool air but not really with much of a view).

Dinner offered western or Japanese set menus, or (on busy nights only) a buffet. We took the Japanese dinner, and it was ok - about the least you can get away with and still call it kaiseki. Service was fine, and the dining room has great views. Breakfast was a standard Japanese buffet with minimal western selections, in a light and airy hall.

I'm guessing this was built in the bubble era as some corporate trophy project. APA is a discount hotel operator, and I suspect they bought the property, or are leasing it, cheaply, to run it for cash flow - hence it's good value for a short break. I'm not a golfer, tho' the course looked nice, and it was not crowded on a beautiful early summer morning. However I am a runner, and above the hotel is a second, rolling, golf course that's unused and gradually returning to nature. It still has buggy tracks so the running's easy, if hilly, but the wild flowers, birds, and grasses, are reclaiming the area and it's gorgeous.

So this is not your cute little rural cabin - more a couple of office blocks on a hillside - but it offers a very pleasant break in greenery and fresh air, away from the city, at a reasonable price. I wouldn't necessarily rush back but, equally, if it makes sense for your travel plans and budget, I'm sure you'll have a nice time.
