Viajera51on 19/07/2017 09:49The apartments at Monserrat are quite dated but spacious and immaculate. Plus, they're pet friendly! Dishes and linens are provided but no soaps or matches for the stove. Staying the night at Monserrat has a great added benefit...it's calm and peaceful after all the day-trippers leave.

jflowerscoon 05/05/2016 22:26I booked the apartments because they are cheaper than the hotel and because I'm staying 4 days and wanted to be able to make some of my food. The room has a tiny kitchen and bath and decent-sized bedroom area. Everything was sparkling clean, including the pressed bedding. The huge windows open to let in the fresh air and beautiful view. Be sure to bring your basics like salt/pepper/oil and dish soap and matches to light the gas stove. The little grocery had eggs, butter, fresh sausages, yogurt, fresh lettuce and fruit, and frozen sour dough bread, and even has some frozen veggies and meals. You get a discount if you show your room registration. There's also great bread and muffins in the gift shop. Heavenly place to stay!! It's a lot more expensive than some of the reviews state: 32 euros/night for 1 person, but you get a discount for 4 nights. The elevator works great now.
Perfect antidote to Barca
Sea-reacheron 17/09/2015 16:24We stayed here for 3 nights after 4 nights in Barca city and it was blissful. Do not expect luxury or chintz, these are very basic and functional monk's cells and that is reflected in the price (and in the Basilica TV channel on the television). That said, if you come prepared for that then you'll be in heaven. The place itself is astoundingly beautiful and so, so calm, especially after the day trippers leave. We really needed this escape after a hectic city break.
If you come in summer, be warned that the cells do not have aircon or even a fan. It was superhot when we were there and my other half struggled to sleep. If we went again (and I would love to) then we'd make sure to buy a room fan to take with us. The cells are so cheap that it'd be totally worth it, even adding in that extra cost.
It's almost a shame to regard the cells as simply a cheaper option to the hotel, they represent a different style of living which is actually quite refreshing.
Basic appartments perfectly situated for hiking at Montserrat
D Non 29/05/2014 06:53Recommended for those who want to explore Montserrat in peace. Morning and evening are nice and quiet before tour bus hoards arrive and you don't need to be restricted by train times if you stay on site. But be forewarned that the appartments are equipped only with basic kitchen items. Also be sure you shop for supplies before you arrive since there is only a small grocery on site. Luxury accomodation this is not, but everything is functional and clean. Strongly recommended for those who are prepared, want to explore the landscape and like independence.
Fabulous location
molarion 30/03/2014 10:13Firstly, the location is incredible. Perched high up on the mountain, but only 45 mins from Barcelona. Lots of amazing walks, caves, hermitages, cable car and of course the monastery. Also a mecca for climbers.
We chose the apartments as they were massively cheaper than the hotel, and they are more reminiscent in style of University Halls of Residence than holiday apartments - albeit with spectacular views. A little small - but who's going to spend a lot of time in them anyway? Cooking facilities, tv with CNN/BBC news etc and a comfy bed.
It would improve things if the management made a couple of changes - making up the bed and providing some of the basics would make things a little easier (soap, washing up liquid etc - the sort of stuff you normally get in a holiday let).
The only other thing that they need to address is a slight smell in the 2 rooms we were in, this may have been due to the low usage of the rooms off-season so they didn't get enough fresh air in.
To get the most out of your trip, a car would be advisable, as it frees you up to do shopping or go to restaurants in Monistrol (supermarket is shut off season and restaurant is OK if over-priced as it's the only one!) and indeed to go into Barcelona.
If you don't have a car, then take the cable car down to find a supermarket to stock up, even if its just drinks!
So in summary, if you don't mind paying loads more then use the hotel. If you want a bargain in a beautiful location then choose the apartments.
