Great meal - Must visit
Bbouldenon 27/08/2017 05:36Ok first the complaints, too much food. This is a loud restaurant but don't let that stop you. Service, food, character all amazing. This was one of the big highlights of a two week trip across the country. Your doing yourself a disservice if you don't visit here.
Sorry, I Just Don't Get It
T2899SCrebeccahon 22/08/2017 17:56We stopped in the Star a few years ago because of all the good reviews. I personally didn't like being seated at one long table with 30 strangers to eat. Kind of like a Viking Hall. The service is fantastic, and a huge amount of food. But I can't stand canned green beans and bland meat. The lamb chops were thrown in a skillet with lard I think, just like my mother used to cook. She was a terrible cook. No seasoning, but the mint glob was just the thing to add flavor to my mouth and kill the taste of the chops. My husbands steak was fried/cooked/whatever, the same way, no seasoning either. Entree comes with the dreaded green beans, spaghetti (really?), and numerous other sides, I forget what. Although the steak was large and tender, it was very bland. I just don't understand the accolades for Basque food. I really tried to like it here.
Why visit ELKO? STAR HOTEL, that's why visit!!!
Sammy Non 18/08/2017 04:41DINING ROOM OPENS AT 5:00P ~ GET THERE EARLY!
Once I knew we were coming through ELKO, this had to be stop #1 .. ..
Some communal tables where you can get to know your fellow diners .. .. First comes their delicious BEAN SOUP .. .. Then their ice-cold HOUSE SALAD with wonderful homemade CROUTONS .. .. And, it keeps coming .. ..
KIDNEY BEANS PLATE
GARBONZO BEANS PLATE
FRENCH FRIES PLATE
GREEN BEANS PLATE
SPAGHETTI PLATE
Like a Korean restaurant, the appetizers never seem to end, and the MAIN ENTREE has yet to arrive .. ..
I had their BAKED LAMB with Garlic and Mint Sauce and it was the best .. .. Fall-of-the-bone tender and delicious .. ..
And, their RICE PUDDING for desert, was the best-ever according to my mum .. ..
THANKS STAR HOTEL!!!
Overrated - was very dissapointed
jenniferpJ9729PFon 18/08/2017 00:18The positives first - the service was very friendly. I really wanted to like it, I tried hard. But it just wasn't good. The quality of the proteins was good - but wasn't cooked proper;y or seasoned well. The soup and salad were fine - nothing special, but fine. The red beans appeared canned, still slimy, the spaghetti side mushy, green beans canned - the garbanzos were okay - probably the highlight. Bread was flat. I know Basque is country style cooking, but it wasn't cooked well. For $33 halibut and $36 lamb chops I expected more.
A family-style gem
DebzKorneron 15/08/2017 17:27On a road trip from coast to coast we came across the Star Hotel when we stopped in Elko NV for the night. This place is a throwback to a bygone era of family-style dinners. Everyone has the same sides...some of which are great (soup, fries, beans, bread/croutons & salad) & others not so much. The entree proteins are so generous they really should be shared - especially with all the sides served. The beef my family had was prepared well but my beautiful halibut filet was severely overcooked - so I sent it back. The staff was excellent and atmosphere family friendly. If you walk out of the Star hungry, it's your own fault!
