What People are saying

clean and quiet but very, very basic

Jargalanton 29/03/2017 16:35

I stayed here over several weeks, in a “superior” (i.e., slightly larger) apartment. The room was clean but very basic in the quality of furnishings and equipment -cutlery that seemed to be made of tin, plastic chairs, shoddy bathrom tiling... The overall impression is that the place was not well thought through and no effort had been made to provide a nice atmosphere or any hint of style. In other words, totally devoid of comfort or charme.

In the entrance hall – which could have benefited from a coat hook or two to hang one’s coat when wet- there was an OK- sized wardrobe (but no lockable safe!) Next to that was a kitchen corner, which was minimalist to the extreme: Equipped with the bare necessities (microwave, coffee maker, water heater, small fridge) and very basic and not particularly nice cutlery/crockery, two mugs but no water glasses and there was no space to prepare food or store any groceries.
The bathroom was spacious and adequately ventilated. There was a very basic shelf under the sink. The sink, toilet and bathtub were past their best but clean. The floor tiles had chinks and there were gaps where they were supposed to join the bath tub: It all looked like a botched job by some French bricoleur.
The main room was clean and spacious and the large bed had a good, if slightly sagging, mattress. There was a desk, a small dining table, and a minuscule night table on just one side of the bed. There was no bedside lighting and just one lamp; I had to shift it around between providing light at the desk for work during the day to serving as bedside light at night. Eventually I asked reception for a second lamp.
There were a couple of simple plastic chairs, but not, as one normally gets in aparthotels catering to longer stays, any “comfortable” sitting option such as a sofa or a lounger.
The small-ish flat-screen TV was too far from the bed to allow for comfortable watching, so one had to perch on one of the plastic chairs if one wanted to watch TV.

In all, it had a Spartan, basic and quite un-cosy appearance, whoever furnished the place clearly had not given much thought to making it nice or comfortable.
Reception staff were OK-ish; there was one very nice and helpful lady, the others were at times bordering on the stand-offish.
Reception closes for a couple of hours at lunchtime every day (this is France!!) and is not manned at night.

The place itself is located in a quiet street in the modernist new part of La Madeleine (concrete, glass and steel and no soul), three minutes from the tram station and within walking distance of pubs, a good restaurant (Le Romarin) and a small supermarket. It’s a quiet location without traffic noise but rooms to the back get the intermittent noise of a howling extractor fan on one of the adjacent office buildings.

In sum, it was quiet and clean but I was not impressed with the equipment of the place. Not necessarily very good value for money.

STAY AT CAMPANILE OVER THE ROAD!!!!

babypink86on 19/12/2016 12:58

So... We arrived at 7.06pm on Saturday night due to severe delays on Le Shuttle. Even though we had pre-paid for the hotel , it was closed and no way of getting in! Thankfully a fellow guest allowed us in with a code she had. Reception empty, lights off,no one there. We tried the number to call out of hours which was not working, neither was the emergency number displayed! We had no access to our rooms! We tried knocking on the reception doors everything, no answer, no humans! In utter despair we walked across the road to try and book into the Campanile, with lovely staff and very friendly (and similar price per room per night may i add) but sadly they could not accomodate a family of three but very kindly allowed us to eat in their restaurant as sympathised with our situation. Finally after going back and waiting in reception, a man came in who had booked and it turns out as he hadnt booked in, he received an email with a code for the front door and the safe to be able to access his room keys! This we never received but they had our email address as had previously emailed us. Upon hearing commotion of us thanking this man profusely, a woman comes out of the reception door and very rudely stated "we are closed". Upon showing her the booking email and explaining we never received any codes, she kept repeating "it is not my problem, we are closed". My husband walked me away with keys in hand from the safe with our saviour, the kind stranger staying at the hotel.
Well... then we arrived at our room, on the 6th floor, an apartment. We were greeted by freezing cold temperatures. The window was broken, a hug crack in the glass and it had warped. Thankfully from my husbands brute force, we were able to close it. Then we realised even though we have booked for 2 adults and a child, there was no made bed for our daughter! We made do with the mattress of the sofa and spare bedding found around the room, with the cushions from the sofa downstairs. Then i entered the bathroom, and all i wanted to do was cry. There was a pink line of scum around the bath, a black grit like dirt covering the bottom, chunks in the baths enamel missing leaving black marks. IT HAD NOT BEEN CLEANED. We decided we had no choice but to sleep there and escape as early as possible. Then came the icing on the cake! Upon check out, they claimed we had to pay additional money called "City Tax", which was never mentioned at the point of booking. Surely this should have been included in the price when we paid up front weeks ago????
DISGUSTING HOTEL, DISGUSTING ATTITUDE FROM STAFF!!

Friendly, reasonable place to stay within easy walking distance to Euralille

Jody Aon 17/12/2016 14:20

Stayed in a twin room - about a foot between the beds. It has got a tiny bench for cooking, etc. but there are no tea/coffee supplies so we didn't use it. Excellent hot water and small heaters in the room with opening windows. There was a fairly noisy extractor, but as we were sharing the room, it was good 'white noise' and we slept well. The breakfast was fine, with a selection of breads, cheese, juice, etc. Receptionists were friendly and helpful and spoke good English. We left our bags in storage both on arrival and departure (1.80 euro each).

To walk from the Eurostar terminal (about 10 mins), go out the left exit (ie. away from shopping centre), continue around to the left across the road and make your way down the path off to the left through a park with lots of high grasses. Sort of cut diagonally towards the right through it, then head to the Irish Bar seen down the street, cross over the road between the trams and continue for a block - the hotel is around to the left. You can also get the green tramline (entry to stairs down are easily seen in the corner of the Euralille piazza) - one very short stop to Roumarin and walk 2 minutes from there.

All in all and ok place to stay, nothing exceptional but if you get it for a good price it's fine.

Ridiculously expensive

Nice hotel and rooms, but extremely over-priced for what you get. The room and bathroom was large and spacious, and all amenities were modern, clean and functional. Great to have the self-catering option, but not required for my short stay. However, almost double the rate of any other budget hotel I stayed at around France during Euro 2016, and then I still had to pay extra for breakfast and early check-in, despite my room being ready (ended up costing around €260 a night in total)! Definitely not worth it for that rate... And to top it off, Wi-Fi was not even complimentary! Location was pretty good, and very accessible to Gare de Lille Flandres and Europe, both by a short walk (10-15 minutes) or the nearby tram stop (1-2 stops away). Sleep quality was average - the bed was very low to the floor and not that comfortable, and the linen was quite rough. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast offering was above average, so overall it is decent ''supposedly budget'' hotel. However, the rate I ended up paying was definitely not worth it, so beware of that...

Overnight stay for business trip and meeting

Carolyn Won 13/07/2016 14:48

Extremely disappointed. Accommodation was nothing like advertised and was totally unsuitable for our needs, such that we did not stay and instead found alternative accommodation. We checked out just as the staff were leaving for the night and we were not acknowledged. The bathroom and bedroom are up extremely steep stairs. We had planned to hold a business meeting in the apartment in the morning after an overnight stay, (and as such had paid for a later checkout time without first having seen the rooms) but it was totally inappropriate. The hotel was part way through redecoration so our apartment had 3 painted walls, and one still in need of paint. The walls were bare. We tried to move the table and the leg fell off. The bottom of the saucepans was very greasy. There were no towels left for us- I had to ask twice for these and then fetch them from reception. There were no cups in the cupboard. Again, I fetched them myself. The staff (with the exception of one) were generally very unhelpful. The fire alarm went off whilst we were there and despite going down to reception (along with other guests) there was no acknowledgement from staff, and we just stood there waiting for someone to tell us something- the receptionist continued to book in a new resident. I would not recommend this place unless one is comfortable with hostel/student accommodation (even then, I have seen much better..).
