What People are saying

I have stayed at Arai Ryokan 5 times

Thomas S on 03/06/2017 20:01

Arai Ryokan never disappoints. The rooms are beautiful and over look the river. It's absolutely beautiful and well worth the visit. The food and service are excellent. The hot baths are historic. Make sure you ask for a room facing the river not the courtyard. The river facing room come with a seating area that overlooks the river. The room are large enough for 4 to 5 people.

I have been to at least 10 Ryokans, this is the best!!!

Its HUGE, the building is on the National Registry of Historic Buildings, 5 onsens (hot springs) including one out door, two private, and two communal Naka-Izu is a beautiful area not far from Tokyo. Unlike most Ryokans, this place had service available for drinks and snacks at all times. Easily the best service I have experienced

The property was stunning with multiple koi ponds and gardens. Truly amazing.

Experience of Tradition

Arai Ryokan is located in the center of Shuzenji Hot Springs town which has about 1000 years of history and convenient for sightseeing.

Among some tourist attractions around Arai Ryokan, the buildings of itself are especially remarkable. 15 buildings are registered as cultural property of Japan. The oldest of those was built in 1881. Almost all of the buildings are made of wood and well maintained. I felt as if I had stepped back in time. If you wish to know deeply about the history of the inn, the guide tour is available, although I'm not sure whether the tour is multilingual or not. The drawback of the old wooden buildings is temperature. In winter it is hard to keep warm in the room, so it may be better to stay in summer.

Hot Spring is awesome. One of the bath house called Tenpyo Buro is designed by a famous Japanese artist trying to reproducing the ancient style of wooden architecture. Its atmosphere is splendid. But there is no shower in Tenpyo Buro, so if you wish to use a shower, you should try another bath house. I recommend you to reserve a private bath room which is renewed in 2014 and available with extra fee.

Food is served in the way of Japanese traditional Kaiseki style and beautifully cooked. The area around which Shuzenji Hot Spring is located is famous for wasabi. If you like wasabi, it will be nice to try fresh one.

As a whole, if your top priority is to experience Japanese tradition, Arai Ryokan is one of the best choice.

歴史のある温泉で趣のある建物に泊まって日本の伝統に触れる体験は、他には味わうことのできない貴重なものになると思います。

Nice enough but doesn't compare to all other ryokans in the same price range.

We love the ryokan experience and have been to many. For the price, we felt cheated. The service was very poor. The young woman who showed us to our room never showed us what was behind what looked like a closet door off our little terrace. As she had shown us the few communal baths, we went to one of them for a soak. Later that night, my husband was exploring the room and opened the door to find we had a private bath all along! The evening meal was good enough but our attendant kept bringing dishes so quickly that we couldn't relax an enjoy the meal. We kept asking her to slow down but she either didn't understand or the kitchen was just regimented. If you're in Suzenji, there might not be a better option but if you are just looking for a good ryokan experience, go elsewhere.

Very traditional Japan experience!

To us this was as good and traditionsl as Japan can get!
The house might be a bit dated but absolutly stunning and charming!
English knowledge especially of our roommaid/waitress was perfect, the room most traditional, the baths (there are 4 different ones and also for couples) amazing and the food beautifully arranged and of course 100% Japanese.
We loved our 1 night stay!
