Two night stat
on 02/08/2017 22:28My girlfriend and I stayed for two nights as part of a longer break in Cornwall. The hotel is in a good location for Penzance and is close to a number of nice pubs. There is no hotel car parking available and whilst there are public car parks near by, this is a bit frustrating of having to sort car parking meters every few hours.
We had a ground floor room and it was really impressive. ReAlly well decorated , it felt cosy and warm. No complaints at all, except the price but it was Cornwall in summer.
Breakfast was included in our rate. It was a la carte and there was no problem Ordering off the menu. The only issue was the waitresses remembering what we ordered. The first morning they got a couple of things wrong. Service was a bit slow and it felt like they were a bit understaffed with staff doing absolutely everything. I had ordered a double espresso which I ended up taking to my room as it took so long to arrive. The frustrating thing is that as breakfast is a la carts I got charged extra for the espresso.
Dinner in the restaurant was really tasty and very popular both with residents and non residents. No complaints at all.
The hotel has a nice Lounge area where you can have a drink and coffee and relax. It wound have been nice if in the afternoon they had cakes / light snacks available to go with the coffee but this was not something which was offered.
Overall the stay was good and we enjoyed our stay but there was a number of areas which could have been improved, notably the service which felt stretched.
Mixed feelings
Visitor23673on 30/07/2017 18:55Pros:
Great, central location
Clean and nicely decorated room
Nice toiletries
Good quality food
Cons:
Over-priced for what it is.
Room very noisy and hot!
Tensions between staff - overheard whilst waiting for breakfast to be served
Very Dissapointing
Browncowcelloon 25/07/2017 18:45Booked a twin room as a special treat for me and my daughter. Quite steep at £170/night but rooms appear beautiful online and breakfast gets an excellent write up.
Positives: Friendly check-in and friendly staff, quirky place, nice bar and good cocktail happy hour, pleasant lounge (hot chocolate excellent). Nice toiletries in room.
Not so positive: Bedroom was tiny, the smallest I have ever experienced. One small wardrobe half taken up with fridge, dusty shelves inside, no dressing table/drawers, just room to get around the beds. Bathroom tiny with a grey lino floor. No bath. Decorations funky but in need of re-touching.
Beware, breakfast is also not included unless you book directly with hotel. The portions at breakfast are expensive and small e.g £7.50 for one piece of French toast topped with half a banana. Home-made Granola tasted burnt.
We had such high expectations for this trip which were sadly a long way off being met. Gutted.
We'll be coming back again!
Miaxxon 16/07/2017 12:52Really lovely stay, the rooms were beautifully decorated with some very clever little quirks, and squeaky clean - comfy bed too! We ate at the hotels restaurant, The Cornish Barn, which was delicious, and served yummy cocktails and wine. All in all, would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely be coming back again!
Overpriced and disappointing
hedgehoggirlon 15/07/2017 23:43The Artist Residence was a huge disappointment. Apart from the expensive toiletries, and fancy tea boxes, the cost of the stay was not worth it.
The greeting and check-in process was sloppy. The shower holder was so loose, the shower head did not stay up on it’s own. Creaky floor boards meant that you could hear the occupants above you walking about.
It wasn’t busy and yet breakfast service was so slow, that we finished our meal in less time than it took for them to take our order.
For the price we paid, this was not worth it.
