A stay in a real castle

WimVdson 04/08/2017 10:08

We ended a two week holiday in Ireland in Ashford Castle and it was a beautiful end to our holiday. A stay at Ashford Castle really feels like staying in a real castle. Already at the gate you are greeted and welcomed and after a ride through the beautiful gardens you discover the castle itself. The welcome at the castle is very friendly and then you are checked in and shown around the castle, which is a true castle dating back to the 13th century. And everything else has the same class and friendliness : our room was spaceous and very nice (with 4-poster bed of course), the bathroom extremely spaceous and completely equipped, the view from our room over the lake was magnificent. We walked the beautiful gardens and had dinner at the George V restaurant, which again was a great experience. It all comes at a price, but this is a unique stay in a unique hotel, with super-friendly staff !

The best service in the world.

We booked our stay at Ashford Castle for July 24th & 25th for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had been travelling around Ireland and this was our last stop. We definately saved the best until last. From the moment we arrived at the gate we were treated so well and welcomed so genuinely. Our bags were taken care of and check in was seemless. We were upgraded to a junior stateroom for our anniversary.
Our stateroom was beautiful , a bedroom with separate sitting room . A cake we ordered was waiting for us as well as a lovely message from the reception team. In fact we received other messages too during our stay from housekeeping staff as well including special treats each night and a " Happy Anniversary " pillow. All the staff at Ashford Castle were so warm and friendly. Often chatting to us and showing a genuine interest in the guests. They always knew our name and wished us Happy Anniversary.
We spent a morning walking around the grounds which are stunning. The walled garden in full bloom was an especially lovely place.
Afternoon tea was delicious and we had dinner in George V restaurant where the food was excellent. Again the staff were friendly and curteous. Our waiter Arezki helped to make our anniversary meal so memorable. The atmosphere in the restaurant is elegant but relaxed. We had breakfast here too which was also excellent.
We could not have chosen a better place to celebrate our 25 years together. From the stunning rooms in the castle to the beautiful grounds and most of all the service which is second to none. We had walked around the grounds 25 years ago on our honeymoon and always planned to stay someday. Well now we have and will return for sure. Already planning for next year!

Beautiful castle

My family and I spent a night in Ashford castle on our trip through Ireland and it was by far the best hotel we stayed at on our trip I would recommend it to anyone looking for pleasant staff and beautiful grounds to walk!

Afternoon Tea

Had a great visit to Ashford Castle for Afternoon Tea in late July 2017.

Thought the Afternoon was good value compared to other (not so grand) Afternoon Tea venues. Although 19 euros a glass of champagne was excessive, and was not included in the Afternoon Tea.

Service was good, but felt for a 5* experience it could of been a bit better.

Was also strange that we arrived 10 minutes before our booking, and were asked to just sit outside the Connaught Room and wait to be seated. I presumed there was no bar nearby, but never had that before.

We followed this with a walk round the amazing grounds, which was fantastic.

All in all, would recommend the experience.

Fabulous stay

What a fabulous place!! Old castle on a lake. We arrived and were greeted by the "keeper by the gate". We were shown into reception and offered a welcome cocktail or soft drink. The rooms are luxurious and have a mini bar which we are finding fewer and fewer hotels offering. We had a wonderful dinner in The Dungeon restaurant. We had an issue with the live music as it was close to our room and kept us awake. The next day the hotel staff went to great lengths to change our room even though the hotel was fully booked. After moving us, they gave us complimentary champagne. We also enjoyed dinner in the George V restaurant which is more upscale than The Dungeon.

The highlight of our stay was the Hawk Walk at the Ireland School of Falconry which is on the castle grounds. We highly recommend doing this walk. You carry the hawks perched on your arm. They fly off and you are given pieces of food to attract them back to you. It was so much fun!!

All in all it was a fantastic stay! If you are planning a trip to Ireland, don't miss the opportunity to stay at Ashford Castle.
