I booked into this hostel through hostelworld for 3 nights and arrived at the hostel the same day. I booked a 4 bedroom dorm. The receptionist forced me to pay before I could see the room. Once in the room it smelt like stale beer, it was dirty, it was nothing like the photos online and the bathroom door was broken. I reported these issues to staff and the fact I had been alerted to various criminals operating on the ground floor, their purpose of ripping off tourists at the money exchange places, pick pocketing etc.
I am a young female traveler by herself and i did not feel safe in this hostel. I let the staff know it was not the same as the photos online and the photos were misleading. The laundry was being done in the lobby of the hostel, near the lifts there were large sacks (of grain?) falling across the corridor, and tiles falling off the walls and ground. The place was a mess.
Refund was refused by the staff and i was intimidated by 3 male staff until i left the building. I spoke to a manager the next day and he was extremely unprofessional in how he dealt with the situation and no refund or compensation was given.
I ended up staying at Urban Backpackers which was walking distance from this hostel and had an amazing stay with them. It was an amazingly clean hostel, great staff and great facilities, AND cheaper than Ashoka Hostel.
Friendly staff, clean rooms, good AC, easy location

Very friendly and accommodating staff made this a comfortable stay. Very clean room, good AC, and right across the street from an MTR. I was perfectly content. The elevators in Chungking Mansion demand patience, and you need to put up with pestering hawkers on the ground level, but you get what you pay for.
Well taken care off

I booked a double bed room in advance 250 HK$ for 1 person / 1 night - room clean, bed reasonable, bathroom minuscule. Very good location, easy to get around. Getting the lift can take forever. Cheap and convenient, you get what you pay for.
