Beautiful location, but very overpriced for what you get!
Jade Don 02/08/2017 19:33After a week camping, we were looking forward to our night at Asticou Inn---which was nearly $300/ night. For this amount of money and their lovely website, we were expecting quite a bit more than what we got.
The pros: beautiful location overlooking Northeast Harbour, the character of an older inn, clean nice pool to relax in. Also, the staff (perhaps to make up for the accommodations?) were exceptionally lovely and pleasant.
The cons: for nearly $300, a 4th-floor walk-up room that was rather small with views of nothing, with a shower that repeatedly went off whenever any of us was taking one. So a lot of time covered in soap shivering. Additionally, the 'included breakfast' was horrendous! Hard discs of 'eggs,' hardly any fresh fruit---it was really sorry.
NOT worth the money. You're better off with an air bnb or camping!
Dinner
Jess Mon 30/07/2017 03:45First let's be clear, the view and the pop overs were to die for. Gorgeous and delish. The rest was Meh. Service was acceptable, not exceptional (or even good) and the food was mediocre and the prices were not. We had fish and chips (portion was large) with hand cut fries. Tasty enough but not $26 tasty. We also had the pistachio crusted salmon that was served over risotto (not as described) for $29 that was really just mediocre.
Nice specialty beer selection. Cosmo was just ok. Had oj in it which was just wrong.
Would not return unfortunately. As good options if not better are available.
Beautiful setting, beautiful gardens, nice waiter. The rest was meh.
Julie Mon 20/07/2017 15:30There doesn't seem to be anyone in charge or overseeing people to make sure things are being done as they need to be. No one to say re-do this, do this differently, is this the best experience the guests could be having?
There was NEVER enough breakfast out, we were here for 4 days. You'd think they'd take note, count guests and adjust a food plan for the next day accordingly but they couldn't keep up and when we had to wait for new food to come out, it could be up to 20 minutes and even then the food trickled out. Don't get excited about breakfast. It will tide you over to lunch but you won't be satiated. The basement of the hotel, where the restrooms are, smells. Thank you dirty carpet. Please change me!
The front desk staff was friendly, but not very knowledgeable about the area and recommendations. We asked for a place to pick up sandwiches and they recommended otter creek market. We went there and the sandwiches looked a few days old from 7-11. The milk for coffee was also curdled. Side note, don't go there.
Happy hour was an upside. The blueberry mojitos were winners and only $6 at happy hour. There was also the waiter Jon, the Brad Pitt look alike, who was awesome. He gave us great recommendations for hikes, waterfalls and places to swim. He also just checked in day after day and was very friendly. Thanks Jon! Aleksandra was also very sweet.
We stayed in the topsider cottages (request he two closest to the main house). Great views and comfy for 3+ people. The bathrooms are teeny tiny and slightly claustrophobic. The rooms were ok but the cleaning service was poor. There were some clothes left in the drawers when we arrived. Guess no one checked there. I don't think the floors in our rooms were cleaned before, during or after our stay. They made the bed but didn't clean the towels, give us new soap, change the toilet paper rolls, wipe obvious surfaces. We had to call at night to get that all sorted; they fixed it, but again, no adult in sight to tell these people they weren't doing their job right. There were also a few dead bugs in the room from start to finish of my stay, guess they missed that?
Don't plan on having cell service three. The internet was horrible. They need to increase their bandwidth and space out routers across the different houses of the property.
The pool was fine. There's nowhere to swim in the lake which is unfortunate. Would be fun. The gardens on the main property and Asticou Gardens are lovely and well maintained.
Overall I guess I would stay here again if I was coming to Bar Harbor, I'd just lower my expectations, and look for better rates for sure.
Beautiful grounds, ok accommodation for family with teenagers/Blue Spruce
Dorian Pon 19/07/2017 03:01The grounds and views are stunning and peaceful. The pool is actually nicer than we were anticipating based on the pictures. View from the restaurant is beautiful and it was lovely to have breakfast outside on the patio. We visited with our teenage daughter and teenage son, so our accommodation needs were quite specific. We were booked in Room 301 of the Blue Spruce cottage, since we needed separate sleeping areas for our kids and this was the only appropriate space. While the master bedroom and deck were quite nice, our son slept on a twin bed in the dining area, which was a strange set up. The other sleeping accommodation was a pull out sofa in the living room- the sofa definitely needs to be replaced. The springs were broken and it may have been one of the most uncomfortable pullout sofas I have ever had the pleasure of laying down on. My daughter really couldn't sleep on it at all. There is one small bathroom with peeling paint- we didn't care much about that, but our kids thought it was "gross. " I would stay here again, but only if it were the two of us in a regular room.
Quaint and beautiful
Wine-dine-wineon 17/07/2017 01:44This was a beautiful quaint inn with nice views of the harbor. We enjoyed their complimentary breakfast, friendly staff, and location. We probably would not stay there with our elementary age child, although there was a pool and tennis courts.
