What People are saying

Not bad for one-two night solo

Artem Don 15/01/2015 18:25

I choose it because I needed hotel in the centre, I did not cared about comfort and I needed something cheap. This was right selection. Cheap, centre-located rooms. Service is quite average, breakfast - I preferred not to try it.
If you need just bed and WiFi - that's your choice. If you need nice service, comfort and Hilton Honors points earned - well, probably not the place to sleep in.
In details:
- dark and dirt. Or, let's call it "gothic".
- room is the smallest one I ever slept. Let's call it "anti-claustrophobic"
- bathroom is almost as big the room. It's proportionally the biggest bathroom in which I ever washed my perfect body, while one of the smallest in absolute measurements
- lots of restaurants, museums etc. around

Great location--basic hotel & a great value

Having read the reviews, let me be clear...it is a basic 2-star hotel by USA standards but 3-star by European ones. Basic clean rooms, nice breakfast, pretty good overall service, the staff is jOK. Caution, you have to navigate steps as you enter and the lift is in the back of the hotel and is at the stair landings not at floor level. This was a great deal given its location.

Basic but cracking location

So, I ended up booking here even after reading some of the terrible reviews on the place, and to be fair, some were accurate, but others not. Right, lets get the negatives out of the way... Toilets down the corridor which are small and don't exactly lock properly. Breakfast room can be a bit crowded and you might have to share a table with someone and the breakfast room is a little cramped. The entry lobby does smell of cigarette smoke but its a communal entrance so the hotel can't shoulder all the responsibility for that. There is no lift so try to travel light. The walls are paper thin so you can hear what's going on next door, so just bear that in mind if you're up to no good ;) The room cleaning could be a bit better too; when I was packing my things to leave, I looked under the bed and there was rubbish there from a previous guest. Now, this can happen in the best of places (I once found a bra in my room at a 5-star hotel in Birmingham) but it still does let the side down, especially as I found an empty box of condoms... There is also a slightly seedy strip joint next door.

Now the positives. The location is fabulous! So central it is unbelievable. One tip however, if you ask them which is the closest station, they will tell you Zoo Station or Uhlandstr. on the U1 but just go for Uhlandstr. even if it means changing trains as its only a block away. Friendly staff and you can leave your bags there on your last day if you have a late flight. Reasonable selection for breakfast, but a hot option would be nice. I was in a single room and whilst there wasn't much room in there, it was big enough for what I needed. Staff were friendly enough, not that I had to speak to them much and reception is open 24 hours a day. One of the best things though is the price! €29 a night incl. breakfast you just can't complain if you only want somewhere to rest your head at night.

This is the third hotel I've stayed at in Berlin and its pretty average in comparison. Would I stay there again? Erm, possibly, depends on why I was in Berlin... Its not an ideal place for children though...

This is a "Pretend" Hotel - Not a "Real" Hotel

The staff are awful, the breakfast rates 3 out of 10, the rooms are terrible, the bathrooms are worse, the towels are awful, the lift is a joke! The free wifi is excellent, the location is excellent! The breakfast room is impossible to move around to get food when it is half full of people. It is also only capable of seating about 15% of the guests at one time. I complained that I could not wait for breakfast, having waited 20 minutes, upon checking out, he still charged me for it! Amazingly the people have great command of the English language when checking in, not when checking out! BTW, none of these people are German.
We had two rooms, I was in a single to start with, two people could not fit in the room to talk. I was moved to a double, larger, but still a joke. My business partner had a balcony which to my mind was structurally unsafe. This is not a hotel, it is a joke! One actually wonders if it serves some other purpose, there is a "knocking shop" next door which causes all sorts of noise right through the night. The weather was very hot and one had to sleep with windows open. The lift stops at "half" floors e.g. staying on the 2nd floor, get out at 2.5 and walk down a flight of stairs. The lift is at the back of the excuse for a hotel, there is no access to the lift after 7pm as the yard gates are closed. Should you insist upon staying here, don't arrive with much luggage, reception is on the 2nd floor (3rd floor to the Yanks). The stairs are very old and a long way up! Never, ever again, would I stay here, I love Berlin but if I had to stay here never! Do not be fooled by the picture of the bedroom on their website!!! This is not a family run hotel.

Wish I hadn't given it a chance!

Due to the IFA Fair being on in Berlin, there was not a lot of choice left when I booked this hotel. However, some of the reviews seemed quite good, so I went ahead and so did one of my colleagues. The location is very good as it is just off the Kudam, but that's about it. The lift, which is outside around the back of the building, did work when we arrived but then it was out of action for three days. The entrance and the hallways are dirty as are the worn our carpets. The theme continues into the rooms where curtains can't have been cleaned for a long, long time and provided a good place for mosquitoes to wait to pounce in the evenings. At least my room was quite spacious, in fact it was probably considered a suite when this hotel was in it's prime around 50 years ago. I even had a balcony, although the paint was flaking off the walls and there had clearly been no investment in decorating for a long time. The beds were really uncomfortable and this was made worse by being eaten alive by mosquitos for the first two days until the cold weather set in. The breakfast was ok, but the staff seemed disinterested and one of them had such a miserable expression that she would have made a clock go backwards. One good point, the internet was free and also excellent - very fast! Six of the worst nights I have ever had in a hotel. I'll save my pennies and book something better next time and make sure I book early, because I won't be going back here for sure!
