Always a good experience
lebarailon 10/05/2017 10:12This is a beautifully located restaurant .. equally at home in the summer or winter...good outside facilities and a warm and welcoming indoor restaurant. It is an experience, with different shaped and coloured plates for the varying courses .. which aren't really necessary, but which add to the quirky character of the place. We disagree with one or two of the reviewers, because we have found the food good, and the staff obliging. It is perhaps a bit fancy .. and perhaps they could do with a few simpler things on the menu, but it is innovative and different. It is a pleasant place to dine, quiet and comfortable. It is a nice drive out from Fontenay, and an altogether good experience.
Charming place with superb restaurant
Type17on 10/10/2016 16:30We stayed here for one night on our way north through France on a driving holiday, and it's a fabulously charming hideaway.
The room we had was along the riverbank, and was relatively basic, with a mattress that was a bit soft for most tastes, but clean and secure, and parking is free in the courtyard that backs onto the river.
The restaurant is the real reason we stayed here and we were not disappointed - superb French cuisine, served in a delightfully old and charming setting by efficient and professional staff. The cheese trolley is an experience in itself...
Stop-over close to Niort
aged_traveller47on 13/09/2016 17:24We have stayed at this delightful hotel before. It is situated on the river in a charming setting. Since our last visit many of the rooms have been refurbished to a high standard. I guess due to cost they didn't install air-conditioning which is a shame as it is needed in the hot summer. You can open the windows so long as you don't mind the odd mosquito.
A jewel in the Vendée crown
Robotpierreon 13/08/2016 11:44Excellent stopover some 5 hours drive from/to Cherbourg. Room decor and size good, amenities incl tea/coffee making, flyspray well thought out. Location in quiet village beside the Vendée river. Top notch restaurant with Regional Dish menu at E 30 or E 40 Sensations Menu. Extensive wine selection incl local wines in 1/2 bottles at E 11 or 12. Breakfast also highly recommended for fresh orange juice and bakery items. Friendly and attentive staff/owners.
This had been recommended to us by an experienced friend who found it in May but only for dining. We stopped on the way down and were so impressed that we immediately booked for our stop on the way back ! A first !!
High season (July/August) prices mean it is not a cheap option but well worth the experience.
Hidden Gem
bluedixieon 30/07/2016 18:22What a delightful find. Located in a village with no shops, restaurant or bars - and the church was closed ! However the rooms were beautifully furnished and large. Bathroom more like a wet room it was so spacious. Ground floor situation meant we were facing the river - about 20 feet distant. Excellent restaurant and reasonably priced with a couple of menus - one at Euros 26 - or a la carte. Every course preceded by an "amuse bouche" and all explained when served by courteous and well trained staff. I'd go back anytime.
