Excellent location
Jinny038on 30/08/2017 20:17The hotel is actually 5 buildings joined together. I had a room on the 2nd floor, which had a lovely staircase, but a pain to climb with luggage. Room was clean, but there was a heat wave while visiting Edinburgh and the windows only opened about 3 or 4 inches.
Not worth the luxury price tag
Simon Hon 28/08/2017 16:57Nice old building but poorly managed leaving us feeling ripped off.
For reasons of accessibility we had asked for a ground floor room. This turned out to be right next to the hotel entrance, so we had people and coming and going literally inches from where we wer trying to sleep. This was also the designated smoking point, and just inside were some occasional chairs encouraging people to sit and chat. There was no sign to remind them to show some consideration for those in the ground floor room.
Tiny bathroom.
No bar (unless you count some stools and a fridge in the basement)
Left luggage was not secured.
That's worth £500 for two nights?!!! Not in my book. Avoid.
Beautiful Room
Braveliveron 27/08/2017 17:46Had a very nice stay during the Edinburgh fringe. Were very warmly greeted by reception staff and shown to our room. The hotel is very modern and well presented and is comprised of several old buildings in Edinburgh's new town joined together so a little quirky and not easy to find your room first time. However, this makes the hotel interesting and with lots of character.
The room was spotless, large and comfortable and though in the basement, quite airy and ventilated. The bathroom was huge indeed and a great shower, although one minor criticism is would have liked a shelf or bracket in the shower to hold soap /shampoo etc.
The hotel is in a great location, only a block from the York Place Tram Stop, and only 5 mins walk from Leith Walk in one direction or George Street / Princess Street in another direction, however located in a very quiet street if you don't like lots of street noise even during the busy Edinburgh Festival.
Thank you very much for the stay, we will certainly be back.
Two nights for the Edinburgh Festival in August 2017
paulrussell88on 24/08/2017 16:09Last year we had two nights at the Tigerlilly Hotel in Edinburgh and it was superb. This year our friends couldn't get the four of us in there and plumped for this hotel. Cost: £296 per double room per night (including continental breakfast).
It was absolutely awful.
The mattress in our room for our first night was knackered - we really could feel the springs pushing through.
The room was dirty. I took photos the following day (which we will forward to Booking.com (through whom our booking was made)). Dust and grime on surfaces and the window cills. So unimpressive in a hotel which is obviously trying to present itself to travellers as classy.
The bathroom window sash cord was broken. And the window would not open properly.
All of the taps (bath and sink) lacked their hot and cold screwed inserts.
On the following morning I complained to the very pleasant woman in charge at reception. The manager (Len I think) was away, but I was able to speak with him by telephone. He apologised and kindly moved us to to "honeymoon suite" - this room (almost entirely decked out in black within) did have a much better bed thank goodness. But other features included a grubby disused pre-digital TV on the bathroom wall (why not remove it?), a mirror leaning against a wall above a radiator, a rubbish hairdryer, more missing tap inserts and more dust (again) evidencing not enougfh staff being employed (I guess) to clean this hotel.
Then there was breakfast. Delightful staff. But when breakfast finishes at 9.30 and you are still eating at 9.20, is it really necessary for the rest of the room to be cleared around you? This was also the first time I have picked up a half used individual plastic pot of Silver Shread marmalade on my table.
On my second (telephone) discussion with the manager (he wasn't in the hotel on out departing day either) he apologised etc etc. But he was not prepared to refund our first night (or at all). The hotel was satisfied that their rate was competitive for this time of year, he said.
I have never written a review before. I hope I never have to write another one. And I will write off my gross over expenditure on this very disappointing experience. But I just felt that others ought to think twice before paying the full bill on arrival as I was requested to do (and did before I had even been in the room). I would never have paid the full price at the end of this stay, but by then it was too late. Lesson learned.
I will get my room at The Tigerlilly next year.
Edinburgh and the Festival on the other hand was magnifique. What a city. And what a show. Bravo to all of the performers and those who put the event on.
Excellent find
mclaughlin85on 23/08/2017 11:11This hotel was a great find, there was 6 of us coming through for a family event and we needed 3 rooms, and with the Festival on we had great difficulty finding one to accomadate us, what a find. The hotel is excellent. The rooms are very comfortable with coffee- tea facilities. . The hotel is within 5 mins walking distance from the bus station, and 10 mins walk from Princes Street. We will definately use it again
