Very nice B&B just outside of Lier. I stayed for 6 nights as I needed to be close by to Duffel and it was a chance find for me as my usual accommodation was fully booked. This place will now be my usual accommodation for my next visit.

The rooms are well laid out, enough space, clean, effective radiators and a good black-out blind in front of the windows for those who wish to sleep longer than the sunrise.

The bath room had a wonderful radiator for very warm towels and a really powerful shower.

Breakfast is continental style with a super choice of cereals, bread, fruits, just about anything; tea and coffee offered and served with a smile.

Attached to the B&B is a restaurant and a bar, I ate in the restaurant one night and it was super.

A very nice touch is the tea and coffee station in the corridor by the rooms.

I will stay again - I really hope B&B Soetemin does well as a business, they certainly deserve to, very nice place and friendly people - winning combination for me.

Pleasant surprise

This is a great hotel on the outskirts of Lier, room, bathroom and service were all excellent. Breakfast was continental but plenty for all. We weren't expecting to visit Lier as intended just an overnight stop but very pleased we changed our minds and found time for the historic centre, well worth a visit.

Perfect for your final one night stay on the way home to UK

This hotel is just 2-3 hours from Calais depending on traffic. It is in a quiet position not far from an industrial area and at least a 15 minutes drive into the town of Lier. It has a large car park big enough for all residents. The hotel doesn't open till 5pm ON THE DOT, so don't bother coming early, you can't even get in to go to the loo. The owner/ owners wife is Bea who showed us to our rooms. Our friends did not like their room upstairs (see room choice) so had it changed to one on the ground floor where our room was. Our room numbered 2 is quite spacious and very clean. It has a polished wooden floor. Unfortunately it was not very bright as only has 2 small dim lights by the bed and 1 light on the wall by the bathroom. I think that there is a major problem with the light bulbs in all the hotels we stayed in iGermany, France and Belgium now that they are having to use the new low emission type bulbs. The bed was very comfortable and wider than some we slept in and we had a good nights sleep. There was no mirror on the wall in our room but there was in our friends. The bathroom, unlike so many hotels we stayed in was nice and bright but a shame it had no shaving or makeup mirror. It did however have a nice big shower. We turned on the bathroom heater so we were able to warm up and dry the towels we used at night and which we wanted to use again in the morning. There is soap, some shampoo, shower cap and body lotion. Once again the towels had not been washed with softener added so were hard, as we have found throughout Belgium. In the reception area there is a large fresh water container which cleverly will give you either cool water to drink or boiling water when you want to make tea or coffee, which is provided on the table nearby. As the hotel was so far from the town, we decided to take pot luck and eat at the hotel restaurant. It was a lovely evening so we decided to eat outside in their garden where the tables were covered up with linen table cloths. What an excellent decision we made. Lots of local people started to arrive for dinner but Bea ensured that we had first choice as to where we wanted to sit before seating the others even though we are sure they were regulars. Don't expect to be served quickly after all there is nowhere to go and nothing to do afterwards except go to bed. Once the food came, which was just over an hour it was absolutely special. I had the snapper fish with mashed potato infused with fresh tomato, and an excellent vegetable a bit like spinach that I didn't recognised. There was also a strip of coolie on the plate which I think was mint based and the whole dish was cooked to perfection. My friend had the steak and chips. It was very large and he said tasty and not at all chewy. The chips were crisp and dry. The 2 girls had salad containing marinated chicken, salads and fruit which they said was lovely. Don't bother going anywhere else to eat. Breakfast starts from 6 till 9:30 so it should suit everyone. Rudy is Bea's husband, he also speaks English and he helps around the hotel. Bea is certainly no push over and some might very well find her rude/brusque, I think that she is just very efficient and businesslike and you just have to accept that what she says goes, however we did find her always ready to help if you needed something and it suited her.

Home away from home

My fiancé booked this B&B unseen and with little knowledge of the surrounding area, we were heading to the Tomorrowland music festival and needed last minute accommodation. From the moment we walked in, Soetemin was an enchanting place to be. The family owners were absolutely lovely and really made the stay for us. Rudi and his wife (who we forget the name of now, sorry!) were always more than helpful in information about getting around, or for a chat and a laugh. On two occasions Rudi or his son went out of their way to actually drive us to the Tomorrowland festival which was half an hour away, so generous and kind! The breakfast was beautiful every morning with a selection of fresh cold cuts, bread and fruit - to add to this, the wife would actually leave breakfast out for my fiancé and I when we slept in to around 12pm instead of packing it up around 11, what an incredible family. The rooms were simple, clean and comfortable and we certainly did not want to leave! A home we will definitely be coming back to, we've missed it since the day we left.
