What People are saying

Great location in downtown Charleston

Jenny Aon 30/06/2017 20:31

We stayed at the Barksdale House Inn for 4 nights. The first night we got there late and had a room with a not-functioning thermostat. We were moved to a room downstairs the next morning with some temperature control and were much more comfortable. The house is old, as expected there are a few issues, but overall we were comfortable and enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was fresh fruit, a local baked good or two, assorted cereals, etc. It was more than enough and very good each day. The location is great. It's within walking distance of just about everything downtown.

Nice home, great location, disappointing bathroom

Hubby & I spent two pleasant days and nights in this inice old home just a block from King Street and right across from the College of Charleston. For location in the historic district it can't be beat. While not inexpensive, it was less than other options I found. The staff was very polite and accommodating. The weekend hot breakfast which included a delicious tall quiche was great and the weekday cold breakfast was varied and ample, including fresh fruit, cereals, sweet rolls, bagels, etc. Coffee, tea and snacks like brownies were available at all hours and in the afternoon there was a nice little spread of things like pickled asparagus, crackers and cheese but we didn't see any wine available. We stayed in #12, an upstairs room in the coach house behind the main house, and it was nicely furnished and quiet. Unlike rooms in some boutique hotels where we've stayed, it was designed with travelers in mind and had luggage racks, closets, fridge and a hairdryer. The bed was comfy and the linens were nice. I recommend the upstairs rooms to avoid the noise of the front door opening and closing and the sounds of people using the coffee maker in the foyer. Onsite parking and BR windows facing crepe myrtles in bloom were a plus, but the carpet in the carriage house was torn and dirty and the caulking around our tub was gross with mold, which is why I rated it 3 out of 5.

Expected more

Having just spent a few days in Savannah in similar accommodation, quite simply this falls short of expectations.

All of the staff have been wonderful and the location is good however, the room was tired, especially the very small bathroom.

The afternoon sherry with nibbles were welcome but the finesse was not quite there.

I get the impression that the owners have palmed this off to staff to manage and take little interest in the day to day management.

True Southern Hospitality at its best

Spent 4 nights at the Barksdale House Inn in May 2017. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Hannah and her staff provided first class service from check in until our departure. We liked it so much we extended our stay an extra day. We were in Room 10 on the third floor which had a king bed. The Inn is reminiscent of a colonial era southern house which has been turned into a delightful B&B with ample on-site parking. There is no elevator, but the staff graciously carried our bags up to our room. Being seniors, we truly appreciated the help. Once we got the lay of the land, we found that most sight seeing sites and restaurants were within walking distance. We loved Charleston - we met the nicest, friendliest people we have encountered in years. If you are looking for a fun city with pleasant, gracious residents, look no further. Hope to return again.

Asked for a stiffer mattress, got a free uograde to a larger room and bed (and a stiffer mattress...)
Really great location right in the historic district, within walking distace of many restaurants, Battery Park and te French Sector.
And, incredible feature, free parking on the premises.
