More than I expected ! Great food!
wcy729on 10/08/2016 10:10I booked Hotel Kashimaso on japan rakuten hotel website, as japan rakuten has more options of hotels in shodoshima and the price is usually cheaper than other website. If you don't know Japanese, you can use google translate, once you finished booking, you will receive a confirmation email. It was just 6500 yen per night including dinner and breakfast, but the hotel only accept to pay in cash on the day you check out.
It located near the bus stop call "鹿場浴場前". I got lost when tried to find the hotel, because I thought I could walk to the hotel from Tonosho port. PLS DON'T WALK! Take a bus or ask someone who knows Japanese to ask the hotel to pick you up !Luckily a very friendly setouchi art festival staff ask the hotel and they were willing to pick me up for free=]
The room was very decent and quite big for a me, but the washroom was a little bit smelly, there's a air refresher near the door that you can use. The hot spring in the hotel was very nice and clean ! What impressed me the most is the food ! The dinner is a fest! Everything was beautiful and delicious, definitely the best meal throughout the whole trip! The breakfast was nice too!
There're free shuttle bus to Tonosho port, you can ask for it in reception. The staff there only know some basic English, I really appreciate he made an effort to talk to me.Just 10 minutes walk from the hotel, there's a big supermarket, restaurant and public hot spring. I would stay in this hotel again next time! A little reminder that if you use hot spring, they will charge additional 150 yen when check out. It's totally worth it though.
Incredible meals
DanL917on 07/05/2014 21:58I would go back to Shodoshima Island just to stay at this ryokan again. The dinner/breakfast was probably top three I have experienced in Japan. The dishes kept coming so I was stuffed at the end. Sushi on the sushi platter was creatively served in a manner not seen before. Plenty of tempura with 2-3 big shrimp and wide variety of vegetables. I stayed here in 2012 or so and my meals looked more elaborate than the pics someone posted. I think I paid around 12,000 yen/night and booked thru Jalan or Booking.com.
I give top marks to ryokans if they don't cut corners with dishes, e.g., leave out a tempura platter, don't include a whole fish dish which is usually the specialty of the area, in addition to the minor fish dishes included. Or not enough dishes, leaving you empty. I also give top marks when you think the meal is over, you are full, and yet another dish is provided. This ryokan impressed me with the sheer number of dishes, the wide variety, and the generous serving sizes. Quality of preparation was also excellent (no soggy tempura).
Although the staff didn't speak English, they were very friendly. I was given some gifts when I left which included a package of Shodoshima somen noodles. This ryokan is off the road a bit next to a parking lot and not to be confused with Seaside Hotel Matsukase.
Japanses Style, Good service and location
PeterJKaneon 20/10/2010 06:51Very helpful staff - they organised a rental car for us, and went out of their way to make us welcome and comfortable. The hotel catered mainly for Japanese people, but coped with our English language and tiny bit of Japanese. The inn is Japanese style with tatami mats and bedding that is rolled out at night. Food was excellent
