Well.........i am a person who does not pay much attention to reviews and only on some occations read them!!! BUT...... after staying at the Beech Hill Hotel and Spa over the last 4 days, need to write this!!
On arrival to the hotel and after parking the car, and as advised did not unpack until we had checked in. We entered the hotel via the back stairs, and what a sight, the carpet was extremely dirty and stairs very steep, but put this down to them being the steps that leed from outside.
The second staircase was slighly better but still had carpets that were very worn and very old, not really the first impressions that a 4* establishments should have.
We were given the key to room 21 which was at the 2 flight of stairs down from recepetion but quite handy for unpack the car as there was a fire door that could be used for the room.
The room however at first impression was clean but with a musty damp smell when inside, we put this down to maybe the room hadn't been used and we opened the windows to let some fresh air in, the re were stains on the carpet on entry and mildew on the net curtains. The bathroom was very clean and looked as if it had been refreshed quite recently?
On our second night there the smell and feeling of dampness didn't subside.
We compained to reception and requested we should be moved as we were staying another 2 nights. They were very obliging and moved us up to room 75 which was on the upper level from reception, and was a beautiful room of which was on the level where all the rooms that had been recently refurbished. The staff were very helpful and had moved our belongings to the room by the time we had returned from our day out.
This hotel is very old fashioned and is in need of a large refurbishment, hope the next people that stay here and has read this review finds it helpful.

Could easily be 5* but let down by details

If you can get into it the refurbished spa is very nice indeed. However confusion and inadequate ancillary facilities rather took the gloss of my experience last weekend.

We have previously stayed at the Beech Hill Hotel for family holidays and to celebrate special occasions. The location is great. Well away from the hustle and bustle of Bowness and Windermere, and we always enjoyed the stunning views and excellent food served in Burlington's restaurant.

We had never bothered with the swimming pool which the last time we visted (a few years ago) looked a bit tired and past it, so when we booked a night away to celebrate a wedding anniversay it was simply a repeat booking on the basis of previous experience with good food and a nice view.

When we go there my wife went to have a look around while I enjoyed the panaoramic view from our room high in the older part of the building. When she came back she said we shoud try out the spa. The pool is completely refurbished with new sauna, steam room and an outdoor hot tub that looked inviting. She explained that there are changing facilities within the spa but she had ordered two gowns (why did she have to ask for these?). When these arrived my wife changed in the room. Not wanting to walk through the public areas in a gown' (yes I'm fussy) I decided I would change in the spa. Couldn't get past the first obstacel a glass door. Telephoned reception who explained that there is a fob on the room key that needs to be put close to the door's actuating device. OK. Now we are in and wifey goes straight out to the hot tub while I looked to get changed. There are 3 small changing areas and 8 shoe box size steel lockers. Two were broken, 5 were in use, one was empty. Got changed put shoes in and stuffed everything else in. Door wouldn't close. Shoes (size 9) were sticking out. Removed shoes and tried again. Door would close. Inserted £1 coin. Nothing happened. Door could not be locked because no key and £1 is now stuck in slot. Telephoned reception for help who sent down maintenance man who offered to try to get my £1 out. My £1 was not what I wanted. I wanted somewhere to leave my clothes, phone, keys and wallet. Better go back up to the room then to change.

Couldn't be bothered getting dressed again so did exactly what I was trying to avoid and walked through the public hotel area barefoot in my swim trunks (dropping socks and undies from the untidy bundle under my arm on the way). I was getting agitated and while passing told the reception staff that I thought the changing facilities were hopelessly inadequate (they agreed). Donned gown in room, left phone keys and wallet in room (there was nowhere else) and finally 30' after starting out entered the spa.

Which was very nice. As was dinner and breakfast.

The whole experience was though let down by the inadequate facilities and lack of explanation as to how to enter the spa. Also quite a few signs of standards being eroded to save costs. A very basic DIY hot drinks tray in the room with little else. The leaflets and hotel guide in the rooms are out of date. There was not a single reading item to be found in the bar area. I expected to see a few books and collection of papers, maybe a day or two old, but the bar area was empty of reading materials. I was going to say sterile but it wasn't. The bar area and furniture are showing signs of wear and tear and the glass topped tables were quite grimy. There is free WiFi in the bar area but you need to enter access codes to use it. Also while we had linen napkins for dinner it was paper serviettes at breakfast. There where many of items on both the dinner and breakfast menus that were subject to supplements and while we are talking about money, to cap it all they tried to charge £10 for the robes on checkout. This was declined.

Would I go again? Maybe. The location and food are without doubt very good, but it was expensive and didn't feel like good value for the money. I know that's subjective but my wife and I frequently enjoy staying in good hotels so it is an informed comparative judgement. We expect to see little treats in the room (a chocolate or bottle of water), something to entertain and distract attention and while away a few minutes. The overall standard has slipped. A better welcome and explanation of how the facilities work would help. Until the changing facilities are improved gowns should be provided without having to ask (or pay extra for). A little more in the way of 'luxuries' provided without asking also would go a long way to restoring this hotel to where it probably aspires to be (and rightly could be).

Mmmmm 🤔

First time visiting the Lake District, what a beautiful place. Picked beech hill for its location, it has some great views of the lake and is about 10 mins in a car to Bo'ness. I payed £354 for 2 nights, for a double room. Stayed in room 93 which is an attic room, smelt of damp and has wall paper coming off at the seams. Found a hair and chocolate stain on the bed, could really do with updating. The bathroom was clean and tidy though. Staff were all very friendly and did a good breakfast in the morning. Good pool facility, but only 8 lockers to 93 rooms!! Overall a good location, but needs updating to the rooms.

Just Perfect!!

Just come back from a two night stay at this wonderful hotel. From the moment we opened the reception door we were hit with the view of Windermere through the large windows in the Griffin bar. The hotel is built on the hill and the corridors on each level maximise the views of the lake. Our room (25) was lovely and had a decked area through the glass door with a table and chairs.
We went straight down to the spa which was just gorgeous. So modern and clean, there are loungers next to the pool but we went to the large Jacuzzi outside which was lovely and warm and the sheltered area is lined with lavender and you can relax in the bubbles looking out over Windermere...just perfect!!!
We decided to stay in the hotel that evening and enjoyed 2 for 1 cocktails (think we tried all of them over the two nights) and then ate at the hotels Burlington restaurant. We were given canapés on the terrace before we were taken to our table, with yet again a magnificent view. The 5 course dinner we had was as pretty as it was delicious and very good value for money at £40 per head and a very nice bottle of red for £23. One of the nicest meals Ive had.
The following day we enjoyed a superb breakfast which was a buffet and was piping hot and fresh. Took a drive to Bowness which is about 5 miles away (£11 in a taxi) but to be honest it was so busy I just wanted to come back to the spa which I have fallen in love with. The quietest times in here is late morning early afternoon and we had the place to ourselves.
I cant recommend this hotel enough Thankyou Beech Hill for making our stay a wonderful one.

My fiancee and myself stayed half board for 1 night. We were greeted by a very friendly lady on reception who told us everything we needed to know about the hotel and booked us a table for dinner at a time of our convenience. Once settled in our room which was clean and had spectacular views over the lake we went to use the spa facilities. I had a massage which was truly amazing. We also enjoyed the sauna, steam room and swimming pool and topped it off by a dip in the outside Jacuzzi which again has amazing views. Dinner was delicious and included canapes in the lounge whilst browsing the menu. After a very good nights sleep breakfast was equally tasty. All the staff at the hotel are a credit to you and offer professional service from start to finish.
We have had a lovely stay and will certainly return in the near future.
