What People are saying

Quirky. I liked it but my colleague was in despair

Raffles69on 22/08/2017 22:54

Myself and a colleague stayed here on business and despite dining together had very different experiences.
On the whole it was a great place for a white englishman, not so good for a turkish arab.
Arriving to find his reservation was lost the resultant time spent meant the restaurant had closed, sadly this was the start of his bad luck. The shower failed to operate correctly and his neighbours were noisy. He felt the bar prices were too high and the location too remote.
However a long drive up to the north coast reset his feelings but he remained unconvinced and has subsequently returned to his well beloved City Centre Premier Inns.
My food was always just right, the service great and the room itself, whilst dated represented good value for money.
I use my own internet hotspot so cannot comment on the wifi inhouse.
I would return if in the area, but I'm not big on city centre hotels so I suppose that's a given.

Not bad

Stayed here for one night working locally. The hotel is pleasant with good reception staff, initially I was given a room on 1st floor but it was next to the extract fan for the kitchen which was very loud, went back to reception and asked to be moved and this was done instantly without any fuss.....good service. Rooms are ok with everything required for a comfortable stay. Evening meal in bar was good and breakfast next day good also. Plenty of parking. Recommended!

Felt more like a prison cell than a hotel room

I've just had to endure three days at this hotel due to business, not by my own choice either.

The hotel is very strangely set out because they have their restaurant set out in the main area of the hotel right in front of where the reception desk is; so people wanting to check in later on in the day will have to drag their luggage through a busy restaurant. Doesn't look great at all, they have a huge restaurant area where they serve "breakfast" in the mornings so I don't know why they just don't put people in there in the evenings??

Anyway, check-in was fine, quick and easy. Lovely chatty blonde receptionist whose name I can't remember, I had been up since 5am, travelled to the airport, flew to Belfast then did a full 10 hour work day, so I was looking forward to a comfortable, homely room to stay in.

I got to the room and my heart sank, it was the worst looking hotel room I've been in. Hard wooden floors, white walls with a lovely damp stain in the far corner of the ceiling, cobwebs all over the windows, the bed was comfortable enough, no plug socket next to the bed always annoys me in hotels, dust all over the place too.

Blinds on the windows instead of curtains, which doesn't block out the security light from just outside the window so you get that beaming in.

In the bathroom, the bathroom looked lovely, I like to have a bath in hotels so I can have a soak and relax but I can make do with a shower, the shower looks like it should be powerful, but the water pressure seems to be non-existent, the water trickled out of the shower, the water heat doesn't work great either. I'd have complained about this but my colleague had the same issue in her room, so what's the point? They must know how bad their water pressure is in the rooms, consider getting that fixed if anything.

Around the base of the toilet was a fair amount of dried up urine. I don't know how much management is paying their cleaning staff but they need to be doing more than making the bed and replacing a towel in the bathroom, the floors need mopping, the room needs dusting.

The noise levels in the room is ridiculous also, the 2nd night I was there I could hear loud music booming from somewhere, I looked around until I realised it was coming from downstairs, apparently my room is over the bar area and they were playing loud music until late at night, I heard scraping of chairs and tables, I'm not usually one to complain about this but this was like trying to sleep while being in the room with them, it got to 11pm and I had to phone down to reception and complain, they must know how much noise can be heard above that area. Especially in the middle of the week, when some of us had to be up at 6am. The receptionist said she'd tell them to turn it down, I said to turn it off. Sure enough 5 minutes later the music died down and I and probably everyone else in the rooms beside me could finally get some rest.

I heard the hotel was under new management and this would have been a two star review but then I read this from a response from another review:

"We have recently came under new ownership and the hotel is under going extensive renovations. Unfortunately, your room was one of the older rooms which we haven't yet got around to renovating."

Why are you charging the same price for rooms that haven't been renovated yet? That response brings this down to a one star review, if you're putting people in disgusting rooms like the one I've stayed in and charging the same as rooms that have been renovated, you shouldn't be operating a hotel in the first place. I don't even know if my room is one of the ones that's been renovated, I sure hope not. Put some carpets in there!

Breakfast is a pretty disappointing affair, a "full irish" breakfast gets you one small sausage, one rasher of bacon, one egg, a small piece of soda bread and a small piece of potato bread. Doesn't come with any toast, the plate looked pathetic, the first morning I had poached eggs on toast, which was alright.

The hotel does have free Wifi though, which is what earns its one star and the evening restaurant is decent but I'll review that on their separate TripAdvisor page.

If I had paid for this room, I'd have been asking for my money back or some form of compensation but because my company paid for this, you can keep your money, it serves them right for putting me in this place to begin with but I'm never coming back here again.

From the Ashes

In my last review 'Oh Dear Service is slipping again' in August of 2016 I spoke of how my and I were regular dinners at the Beechlawns Hotel but how things regarding service and our overall dinning experience left a lot to be desired during a visit that year. In it I spoke of how a manager was less than helpful when I complained about how there was no garnish, smaller portions and the lack of good service. For that reason we did not go back. However we heard lately the hotel had been bought and now had new management, so we decided to return for a meal-the same one which was so poorly made on our last visit. To our pleasure we found the staff and service impeccable and the food quality back to what it had been like before. While I cant comment on the rooms I was told a major investment is to take place which will breathe a new life into a well loved local hotel. Here's wishing it a bright future.

Great value for money and very friendly staff

We stayed for 5 nights while attending a family wedding. We had a quiet room well equipped with flat screen TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Iron and ironing board available on request. Check in staff very helpful as was Grace in the lounge and Lizzy at breakfast. Try and get one of the refurbished rooms - they look superb.
