Great location and great value
William Non 09/08/2017 10:11This hotel is in a great, quiet location, its a 5 minute walk to the port and 5 minutes to the market. We've stayed here before and this year we had a lovely room overlooking the garden. Rooms are a good size and the bathroom had a shower and bath. Staff are friendly. Unusually, there's a garden at the back of the hotel and you can take breakfast on the terrace there if the weather permits. There's also a stylish bar. We haven't had breakfast there, we usually go to a local cafe as there are lots around to choose from. Good wifi.
Comfortable central base
MRTLon 08/08/2017 14:16Just back from 4 nights at this hotel. Met all expectations from previous reviewers. Rooms are spacious and well equipped if somewhat dated in style but bathroom was very modern. Bed was large and comfortable, plenty of sotrage space. Asked for room overlooking garden, but was allocated one with a street view. No problem in the end as there was very little noise. Breakfast was excellent and served in a lovely room overlooking the garden. Would certainly stay here again and totally recommend.
A gem in La Rochelle
John Fon 06/08/2017 18:40Every now and again you come across a hotel where you feel at home immediately. This is one of them. We have stayed in La Rochelle before at a good hotel, but this is better. The accommodation is good, but what makes the hotel is the staff. From the friendly greeting when we arrived to the Night Porter offering me a coffee when we left early. Brilliant. We will be back to La Rochelle, and we'll be staying at The Champlain.
Very bad Wifi
CommanderBiroon 01/08/2017 19:56First off, couldn't find the hotel as it's not marked on the corner of hotel. It just says hotel. After traversing the town 3 times I got google earth to find the hotel for me. Lovely staff and a good breakfast. But the wifi was appalling, some how its left a review on an ibis hotel. Which I wouldn't stay in if you paid me. Registering different devices and giving once only codes in this day and age is unbelievable.
Pretty good 3-star hotel - looking a bit worn
bluevoteron 30/07/2017 23:29I liked the Champlain - the building is quite old, and it could definitely use a coat of paint on the front, but it was a decent value. Everything worked fine - good WiFi, comfortable bed, plenty of hot water, etc. I never eat the hotel's breakfast in France, and instead go in search of a nearby boulangerie and a source of fresh squeezed OJ. Those were easy to find.
The hotel is located a block from the local bus terminal, from which you can get to many places in the region. I took the 3B bus to the Ile de Ré. It's about a 10 minute walk through the old town to the Grand Horloge passageway to the old harbor and a couple of minutes further to the three distinctive towers for which La Rochelle is well known.
If you arrive/depart via train and are traveling relatively light, you can take the #1 bus in front of the train station to the nearby bus terminal, and save money over cab fare.
