Pleasant hotel clean rooms but hot and needed the fan on all night to get any sleep. Food was good with a choice at dinner & a wide selection @ breakfast.Drinks in the bar reasonably priced for a hotel, also out group had 20 percent of wine

Afternoon Tea

We visited for a birthday on Friday 11th, and were not overly satisfied. We had previously asked for 2 vegetarian, when the starters arrived there was fish, however they did bring out 3 fruit cocktail starters instead for us. The lady then explained the teas and they were all these different flavours which all tasted strange and not particularly nice... they then brought the main tiers out which all looked lovely, the sandwiches were nice (vegetarian was egg mayo, cheese and tomato and cucumber) however they do not give you more, so it was around 2/3 sandwiches each which is not much. The cakes were banoffee pie, chocolate eclair, a cream slice and a strawberry tart, all of the pastry on each was soggy and you could barely pick them up.. but nonetheless nice enough once we'd scraped them off the plates. With 2 big scones at the top. We then had a dessert of a little mini trifle which was nice. Slightly disappointed in the lack of cake and also slightly annoyed that when we left we realised they had charged us the standard £11.50 for a children's one too. We felt this is a lot for a child considering they don't drink tea and didn't eat the starters or fish sandwiches.

This hotel badly needs an update to a more contemporary style. Fitness centre staff very helpful but standard of changing rooms reminds me of old type changing rooms at school. Hairdryers not working and very old type of hairdryer in room.

Good for our stay

Only stayed for one night , for a local family do in Colchester .Didn't do much in the hotel other than sleep have breakfast and a few drinks in the bar. Room was nice size , on the first floor with a comfortable bed and clean bathroom . Room overlooked the rear of the hotel and was quiet. Bar prices were reasonable for a hotel with a good choice of beer.Booked room only , but decided to have breakfast before leaving.Paid at reception and for £10 each thought it was good value .Spacious eating area and good buffet choice . Deserving of special mention was Alison on reception . She allocated us a room so that our relatives who hadn't arrived could have an adjacent room .She was very friendly and professional a definite credit to Best Western.Only slight criticism was the hotel seemed very warm in all areas , in the bedroom we had the window open and the fan running all night. In conclusion I would defiantly stay at the hotel again and maybe next time try some of the things missed this time.

Last minute stay

Booked this hotel only about 4hrs before arriving due to a last minute change in plans. Arrived before the official check in time but my room was ready, upgraded as I'm a Rewards member. The room was spacious and cool, which was nice as it was very warm outside. Decent size bathroom and the lounge area had a table and two chairs at the window. The view was of the car park though, but don't know if there would be any better views due to the location of the hotel.
I didn't eat in the restaurant during my stay but did have a sandwich in the bar which was very nice.
The only problem I had was the noise from the traffic in the morning. I had to get up at 7am but was unable to sleep after about 05:30 both mornings. When I checked out the receptionist did ask if everything had been ok with my stay. When I said I'd had trouble sleeping but didn't think the road my room was facing would have been that busy she just said that will be from the A12 behind the hotel. Perhaps they could update the rooms with secondary/internal double glazing
