What People are saying

Romantic night away

Lou Mon 20/08/2017 10:20

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location!
Me and my husband had child free night away and the Shap Wells hotel didn't fail! Beautiful hotel with beautiful surroundings. We had a 3 course evening meal and the food was perfect, only slight issue was it seemed some of the waiters didn't know what they were doing or didn't understand us with simple things like ordering drinks but this soon got sorted.
There was a wedding on when we came but that didn't stop the staff from making everyone feel welcome. Would defiantly recommend Shap Wells Hotel!

Wow is all I can say

We booked in yesterday for an extra long weekend. We have been impressed from the start. We was meant to be in a twin which was a little depressing looking but was changed to a trio as I'm with a young child so need space and the room is lovely. The bathroom is beautiful and everywhere is clean. The room is yes a little oldy worldy but that's part of the charm and super cosy but with huge windows which are glorious. The only down side is the tv is in completely the wrong place attached to the wall. You lay on the bed and watch the side of it haha I'm not sure I understand that at all. The dining room reminds me of the titanic 😂. Yes it's dated but not in a shabby way. It's like stepping back in time for luxury. The staff are just wonderful and so friendly I want to take them all home and teach people how to be nice to each other back in Kent. You really cannot ask for better. The food is delicious too... I just cannot fault. I have already convinced some friends to come and stay and I will definitely be back.

Ok... if you happen to be with a coach party!

Booked here for our anniversary as we had stopped here 12 years ago, being the romantic that I am. Arrived behind a coach party to be told by a grumpy receptionist to wait over there until he had time to sort us out... Got to our room which to be fair was ok and booked for dinner at 7.30. There wasn't many staff about and another 3 coach parties had arrived by that point. My husband ordered a point of John Smiths which was watered down and dire... not good when we live in the brewery town of Tadcaster where it is brewed... mentioned this to the manager who refused to refund him or offer another. Dinner was good and hot but again behind the coach parties... The bed was uncomfortable and the pillows even worse. Breakfast in the morning was dire! Assistant manager sat on her backside just outside of the restaurant isn't very professional, especially when we got told to pick a seat with a white napkin, not one member of staff came over to take a tea or coffee order or explain their procedure for breakfast. The hot buffet was not checked by a member of staff once in the 30 minutes we were sat there, they seemed more interested in talking to each other from the far side of the room. Coffee was terrible! Went to complain and check out as we couldn't bear another night here to be told "oh you should have come out to see me"... no that isn't my job! To also find out that we were paying well over the odds for a room with poor service whilst the coach parties were only paying £30 was a bit galling.

Perhaps if you made as much effort with your proper paying guests like you do with accommodating the coaches, you may be able to update the hotel. Sadly this put a dampener on our anniversary and we won't be stopping here again

An overnight stop on the Coast to Coast Walk

Iona Gon 14/08/2017 20:42

This was a welcome stop after 11hrs of walking in bad weather. We arrived late at 8pm and the staff were very accommodating. We had a lovely tasty meal in the bar, a bottle of nice red. Comfy bed. Plenty of choice at breakfast too. All staff were pleasant and very hard working.

a right gem off the road a bit.....
