What People are saying

Short weekend birthday break

Becca H on 21/11/2017 21:19

We recently stayed at the Sheldon park hotel and might I say I cannot fault the staff or their helpfulness the young lady at the reception desk when we checked in was incredibly helpful giving us all the information that we could have needed and circling the best parts of Dublin too see she explained where to get off the tram (red line) and what to see and do. We had breakfast one morning this was a little disappointing the cooked breakfast was all hard as though it had been sat for a little while but the continental breakfast was impeccable so that made up for it the freshly cooked bread and scones were to die for and meats and cheeses were delicious. We ordered room service on the second night and the food was amazing very filling and tasty. The gentleman who brought it too our room was very helpful. We stayed at the front of the hotel opposite the garage and couldn’t hear any road noise. The room was very clean and tidy and the bed was sooooo comfortable we couldn’t have asked for anything more. Thank you for a delightful stay we will come back!

Not in a great area

Bigideas1983 on 21/11/2017 15:42

This Hotel is not bad but it does have some serious drawbacks that were only evident once we arrived. The location is in a very industrial busy area and is not the greatest area to look at. The view from our rear facing room looked like the slums of Mumbai.

The room was small, clean and comfortable. The Hotel lobby is impressive featuring a lot of wood and a grand staircase. My biggest concern with this Hotel was the lack of places to eat nearby. They do have a restaurant and do offer a nice breakfast, but if you don't care for that you are very limited in your options other than to go into Dublin which is at least a 40 min car/bus ride away. There is not much of anything within walking distance other than a McDonalds.

This leads me to my biggest problem with this Hotel, the response of the management team to my disgust with a Pizza that I ordered through room service. I was too tired to go out for dinner after arriving on our long flight from Toronto so I ordered a Margherita Pizza and a Caesar Salad. When the food came the Salad was delicious, but the Pizza was terrible. It was so thin an anemic looking that we only ate one piece each and left the rest. The little cheese that was on it would slide off when you tried to bite the Pizza leaving you with an ultra thin slice of underdone crust.

When I brought my concerns to the management team the next day they more or less said "oh well too bad", they said we serve this all the time and nobody else complains and I should have said something the night before??
I was gobsmacked, what difference does that make, I just was not happy with the Pizza and I expected them to at least offer me a discount or something. I would not accept this at home so why should I when in Dublin?

Terrible customer service, and it tainted our whole experience at this place. They obviously don't care about their clients experiences and I certainly cannot recommend this Hotel when staying in the Dublin area.

Close to the tram to town. Nothing else.

This is my 3rd time to Ireland, so this hotel is useable. If you are new to Dublin or not confident in your knowledge of area, I wouldn't recommend it. It is a quick walk to the Luas (train) and there is a gas station store and McDonald's near by for quick stuff (open 24hrs for a late night meal after a night of Guinness and Jameson). But don't ask the staff something like that, they will tell u it's closed. The staff (outside of one shoulder length blonde hair woman) was useless and cold, and kind of weird. Don't ask them anything about anything. Trust me. Just walk by and save your time. Also on my 4th morning of 7, house keeping came in my room when I was sleeping, I said "I have the do not disturb sign you. got no response, they just closed the door. I went back to sleep and then shortly later the front desk calls and says I was supposed to have checked out. I said no I was not, to which they offered for sell me an extra night. I had to get up and get dressed go downstairs and show them my reservation confirmation to which they just said they needed to to email to them so they can invoice Hotels.com for their error. No apology or anything. Breakfast is good in the breakfast hall, but you have to order in the dining area, and then pay at the front desk before you eat, and then go back to the dining area. Had one meal in the bar and it was terrible. Room is clean. Bed is ok, not great.

Be Careful of Their Upgrades

Mike B on 07/11/2017 17:49

While the receptionist said we were being given an upgrade at the back of the hotel – it turned out it wasn’t. When we got into the room, at first sight, it seemed clean and comfortable although there was a heavy ammonia smell about. As we were booked to fly out early the next morning we assumed it just had been recently cleaned and didn’t want to be bothered with trying to get another room. However, during the night that smell disappeared and another one took over which began making my wife a bit nauseous. It was late at night so she moved over to the spare bed next to the window which we left open.

What I smelled seemed to be the residue of an insecticide. In the morning while packing a bug (I am not an entomologist but it looked like a small cockroach crawled up on top of the bed. Got away before I could “nail” it).

So hence the main reason for my rating particularly because the ammonia smell seemed meant to cover up a recent insecticide spraying – the same about the remark that this room was an upgrade.

Our stay was short but really found no other facet of it that I could recommend. The front desk reception during check-in and check-out was just “perfunctory” or you could say indifferent. Also while we wanted to go for a swim in the pool, we found that by arriving on a Sunday, the pool was located in another building and club located next to the hotel . . . and closed on Sunday – at least at the time of our arrival. . . . . So I think there is a bit of a penchant at this hotel for misleading (i.e. room upgrades, pool, and what else?)

We tried their room service which was efficient and quick but I wouldn’t recommend their chicken wings (go to the Maldron hotel nearby – much better). The breakfast seemed to be nice given that you could order one individually but couldn’t really take advantage as we just stopped in for coffee and toast.

Mediocre-Unimpressive Visit

venturelea on 07/11/2017 13:08

Me and my friend came to stay for a weekend break in November. Love Dublin, not keen on the hotel. I asked for a twin room, we got given a double room without any explanation. We checked in, initial thoughts were that the staff were a bit cold on reception. Decor is very dated, reminds me of The Shining. The lift is rickety. The room itself, although still quite dated, was alright, although only one very tiny window, no fridge and a layer of dust on the lamps and bed headboard. Very thin walls, we could hear both rooms either side of us. We ordered room service on the evening as we were too tired to go out, we ordered pizza from the bar, French fries and a glass of milk... we were charged €25, including the tray charge of €4... what they failed to mention to me on the phone when I ordered is that they required the money right there on the spot in cash, they did give me the option of going downstairs and paying on card for it as long as it was that night, they didn't allow you to add it to the room bill. Later on we ordered tap water and some ice upstairs (because the rooms are really hot and there was no air conditioning), which they kindly sent upstairs without any tray charge. We paid for breakfast which was €12 per person per morning as we didn't initially order it when we booked. When we went for breakfast, my friend couldn't eat all of hers so she wrapped up her scone to take upstairs to the room to eat it, and the waitress briskly took it off her and said that food was not allowed to be taken upstairs (but we can order breakfast room service, for a further €4 tray charge as long as you order before 3am). So my friend hardly had anything for breakfast but still paid €12. Later on, on the evening, we used the swimming pool. You are required to wear a swimming cap, and if you don't have one you have to pay €2 for one from the reception. Can't complain much about the leisure facilities, except that they don't have lockers and our towel from the reception was dirty with a brown smudge on it. After swimming, we were dying of thirst when we got upstairs as the room was boiling, so we ordered tap water again upstairs, this time however they said they don't do room service for tap water... even though we had it the previous night? Found the staff to be slightly rude/unbothered. The only nice guy was the bar man called Martin who was very friendly and filled my friends bottle with water as she wasn't feeling well, he also kindly offered us lots of advice about getting into Dublin. When we checked out the woman at reception was polite, but cold. I don't have much else to say about the hotel just that I wouldn't bother with it if I was you.
