Afternoon Tea

David Son 19/08/2017 11:40

My wife arranged afternoon tea using a group on voucher for four adults and our grandson. The receptionist was cheerful and helpful. We were shown up to our table and had a wonderful sea view. At the time of our visit there were only two other tables occupied so I can not comment on how efficient the service would be when fully booked as I noted in another persons review the service was slow. However, we were looked after very well and the service was excellent. The young man who served us was very helpful, I think he was called Stefan but can not be sure. I did have cause to mention that my pot of tea was a little weak and he immediately went away to get a fresh pot which was just right so all was good. The afternoon tea was good value and plenty of selection - the scones were extremely tasty and very light. The Prosecco was also surprisingly good ! Well worth a visit :))

Much better than expected.

We had afternoon tea through a Groupon deal. We thought it would be pretty average given what we had paid but were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful position overlooking the sea. Excellent waiter with very good customer service skills. The scones were particularly nice, not too big and served warm. The pastries were dainty and different. If one thing could be improved it would be the sandwiches need a bit more finesse. I wouldn't have wanted to pay full price but considering what we paid it was excellent.

Recent 2 night stay

Recently stayed at Stade Court, the staff were very helpful. The hotel itself is in need of updating and the room was so very hot. There is only one window that can be opened!!! The bed was fairly comfortable, but the pillows were awful. We ate lunch at the hotel and the food wasn't great, we had to complain. The complaint was dealt with very well and we were refunded half of the money back. The breakfast was average, but the staff were very attentive and were always checking that everything was alright and making sure you had had enough tea and coffee. Hairdryer in the room worked for about a minute, so make sure you take your own. Fabulous location right on the front and the fish restaurant opposite is a great place to eat.

A trip back to the 70s

I will not be staying at the Stade Court Hotel again. Thankfully we were only staying overnight for a wedding at Lympne Castle - if we'd booked this for a weekend break away I'd have been thoroughly disappointed.

Positives are that at least the room was clean, and the breakfast the next morning was of good quality in a nice restaurant overlooking the sea. Our room was a twin room that I shared with my sister. Oddly it was split over two floors, with one bed on the bottom floor, and the other bed on the top floor in its own room. This arrangement may work for some people, however personally we hated it as it meant we were really segregated and it ruined our experience. What's more, the individual room felt more like a prison cell, with minimal furniture and only one picture. The decor was also shocking - old green patterned carpets that looked more like something you'd see in a Wetherspoon than a hotel. The curtains didn't match and were equally as old fashioned, and the net curtains even had tea stains on them. The mattresses were very uncomfortable with rogue springs popping up in places, and the pillows were like pancakes. The window in my room had a massive crack in the outer sheet glass of the double glazing, something that meant the noise from all the seagulls outside wasn't blocked out. My hopes improved when I saw the bathroom, which looked vaguely modern and in good condition. We got complimentary shower gel and shower caps (no hand soap though), and the towels were big bath sheets, unlike smaller towels that I've had in other hotels. However, when turning on the shower my hopes fell - nothing but a trickle came out of the shower head, and had I been trying to wash my hair, I'd have definitely struggled!

Something else worth noting was that my parents stayed in a family room - this had exactly the same layout but was in worse condition. The carpet was stained, and the bathroom definitely matched the 70s decor of the rest of their room. They also asked for a sea view upon booking however they did not have one. When bringing this up at reception they did change our bill and knocked of £20, meaning their room was £115.

Overall, my comments on this hotel may not have been so bad had the price been cheaper. For £90 - £115 a night the room was definitely not worth the price. The phrase 'you get what you pay for' does definitely not ring true here. Had the room been £40 - £50, I would have been more tolerant, however for £90 I expect much much more. I have stayed in much nicer Premier Inns for a lot cheaper!!!
