great location very helpful staff
MoiraColthamon 20/08/2017 18:47A two night stay to attend a family wedding nearby. Close to Clifton Village and easy to reach from Bristol train station bus stop right outside. Small room but very clean and comfortable, stairs an issue but I had been warned and luggage was carried up and down for me, and single rooms are difficult to find. . Staff knowledgeable and very helpful, especially receptionist.. Breakfast offered a really excellent selection, However it was surprisingly busy at 8 o clolck on Sunday and they were not quite firing on all cylinders until extra staff arrived at 8.30 and they caught up with themselves. I received an unexpected and very courteous apology for this. The reviews seem to vary a great deal, however my expectations were meet and I was very well looked after.
Relaxing break
SAB1252on 18/08/2017 09:58I stayed here with my sister-in-law for a few days to celebrate her birthday. We found it a perfect base for exploring Bristol. Located on Victoria Square it is quiet, leafy and close to Clifton restaurants and shops, the Zoo and the Suspension Bridge and Observatory. The First no. 8 bus stops outside and goes to the city and Templemeads.
We experienced very good friendly service. All the staff were extremely helpful, nothing was too much for them. Our room was large. We had asked for a twin room and we had a family room with a single and a double. There was plenty of storage space. The ensuite was adequate with a shower over the bath. Wifi connection was fine most of the time. Bottles of water were provided each day, and coffee and tea facilities restocked each day. Breakfast was self service with good choice of cereal, yogurt, fruit and cooked items. There were poached as well as scrambled eggs
We had dinner there the first evening and took advantage of the free glass of wine offer. The food was very good quality and well presented. The service was friendly and efficient.
So why four and not five stars? I looked at some of the poor reports and can understand some of the points. The hotel does look a little 'tired' and could do with a facelift. Our shower did have very hot water, but it was possible to get the right temperature with a little patience. Our shower unfortunately had no button to switch between bath and shower, so we had to fill the bath using the shower head, which leaked slightly. We reported this at the end of our visit. There are no lifts but the receptionist helped us with our luggage. We were in the second house down some steps. Lifts, I think would've spoilt the building. Despite these niggles, our room was comfortable the good was great and above all the staff made sure we had an excellent break.
- Overall ****
Don't do it
yorkshirelass1956on 18/08/2017 01:57Maybe I am unlucky but when the don't stock up your milk or coffee.. then you go for breakfast and no eggs or bacon ready (twice) then alarms go off.. you get staff trying to put other people in your room while your are asleep and after everything the alarm goes off when you want to sleep and need to be up for work., and staff say it's because it's raining!!!! Really ??
Good hotel in nice location
999AlexB999on 15/08/2017 21:19It's a shame there isn't a "good" rating on Trip Advisor as I found this hotel neither "very good" nor "average". I stayed one night here with my daughter as we had to be at a nearby hospital very early the following morning. We couldn't get into the carpark as it's tiny and we arrived late, but parked directly in front of the hotel on the street, which is residents only between 9am and 9pm and we were outside those hours. The lady on reception was welcoming and efficient and checked us in very quickly. We had room 223 on the top floor. As other reviewers said, the stairs are narrow and steep, but we were offered help with our baggage. 223 is a larger double/twin room - still not huge but with enough room for us both. The beds were comfy with crisp bed linen and there were generous supplies for tea and coffee making. The shower was a let down but, for what we paid, we were pleased, which is why I've ultimately given a "very good" rating. The decor is a bit old and tired, but on the whole, it's a charming, small hotel in an old building in a good location at a great price. If you want to spend twice as much in the sterile efficiency of a large chain hotel then this is not the place for you!
Night out in Clifton
Davelikestravelon 12/08/2017 17:16The location is perfect for everything you want, either just staying around the village or heading into Bristol. Rooms are a bit dated and tired but are very clean and comfortable and in my experience it is the best value hotel in Clifton.
The breakfast is is good with a good choice as well, did not have dinner here so can't comment on that.
Overall a very pleasant stay and will be coming back again.
