What People are saying

Modern, Clean and Quiet Country Hotel but Minimal WIFI and Breakfast was not Included

Jim Bon 03/08/2017 00:32

We were looking for a hotel close to Castro Urdiales and chose this one. The owner was very pleasant and took the time to show us around his Hotel when we arrived. The place is only about 15 years old and so everything is modern and in good repair. it was so quiet that the neighour's rooster woke us up in the morning. I have 2 complaints however. First of all the WIFI is virtually non existent. We wanted to use it to send and receive emails etc but up in the room there was no reliable signal. Down in the common room, sitting right in front of the router, we got a faint signal but it was so weak that it took forever to download emails. This was the only hotel in Spain where we had this problem. Even at Roncesvalles, which is isolated high in the Pyrenes, we had strong WIFI. Second of all, our TripAdvisor confirmation said that breakfast was included in the price BUT the owner insisted that it did not include breakfast and so we had to pay an additional 4 Euros for each breakfast we ate. TripAdvisor should fix this oversight.

Quiet and beautiful coastline

We got lost and arrived to Bisabuela Martina very late, around 11pm. We did not have international phones, so we went to the nearby restaurant and they called the owner for us. It was incredibly nice of him to come out of his way that late at night and let us in.

The next few days were lovely. The room was very quiet and comfortable, and the nearby beaches and hikes are incredible. Highly recommend it.

Quaint, picturesque, warm hospitality

Having hiked through the mountains, my group was exhausted reaching the valley of Liendo. It took us a while to discover Bisabuela---what a find! A beautiful inn and location. Best of all was the warm kindness of the proprietor who came back to the center of town to pick up the rest of our party and our bags. At the end of a long day this was a real treat---and completely above and beyond what he needed to do. My personal favorite part of the stay was the wonderful soaking tub in our bathroom. A wonderful place to stay in the quiet town if Liendo.

Nice hotel

Nice house surrounded by beautiful garden. Standard though very clean room. Breakfast is very simple. We had to ask to serve us at 8.30 because breakfast time is 9.30.
Mildew smell in room and bathroom appears immediately if you close windows.
The owner and maid don't speak English at all, and it was a trouble when we cannot find this hotel and cannot get help from him on phone.

A lovely place to stay for some quiet Cantabrian coastline

Overall, the stay was pleasant, the surroundings were gorgeous, and the price was reasonable.

First, the location. It's at the northern edge of town (farther north than the map currently shows), very close to the beach and to roads/trails into the hills (and beyond) to the east and west along the coast. The beach, which is small, secluded, and uncrowded, is easily accessible on foot, though there is quite a bit of up and down to get there. The hiking is good, with some excellent views from the nearby hills, and another [naturalist] beach is accessible beyond the hill to the east.

We traveled there by bus, and it was relatively easy given it's rural location. A few buses per day run to Liendo from Santander, and several more go from Laredo (easily accessible from Santander). From the main road where the bus stops, it's maybe 15 minutes walking up to Bisabuela Martina (there are several signs along the way pointing in the right direction).

There are a few dining options in town. The two listed on TripAdvisor are both good (el Robles is cheaper and more relaxed), and there is at least one simple restaurant with good, cheap food farther down in town. There are also two supermarkets that open at 17:00 and 17:30.

The house itself is attractive, with a nice sitting area inside, attractive gardens (with three new kittens scrambling and tumbling around when we visited), and good views. The pool is small, but it's a decent place to sit and relax.

Our room was small but, again, attractive. We had a small balcony with a great view over the Liendo valley. Everything was clean, and the bed was comfortable. The only complaint there is the mosquitos. We would have slept wonderfully if it weren't for mosquitos buzzing in our ears, waking us up (and covering us with bites). It may be fine if one keeps the windows closed, but then you don't get the fresh air, of course.

The biggest disappointment, though minor, was breakfast, which for EUR4.50 per person per day felt like it should have been more than a bit of juice, some coffee or tea, and a selection of bread/toast. It wasn't worth the added cost, though the dining area is quite pleasant in the morning.

And to address one previous review: they did accept payment by credit card.

Fran(?) the manager was extremely friendly and helpful. He happily answered all of my questions about the area, and he even drove me down to the main road just to show me exactly where to catch the bus back to Santander. His cat, which is very friendly, seems to like him too; it was always following him around as he went to and from various parts of the grounds.

Overall, it's a very comfortable, attractive place in a great location for a decent price. If you're looking to do some walking or to visit a quiet beach in Cantabria, it's a great place to stay.
