What People are saying

nice hotel with good services. fine for families with children

antonio fon 04/07/2017 22:49

nice stay: indicated for families with children. clean hotel with good services: restaurant with different food options every day, clean swimming pools (also indoor) with free chairs available. people at the reception really kind and ready to serve clients. hotel is not far from the beach (100 meters more o less) which is free: would be a plus the possibility to have a dedicated area with umbrellas and sunchairs (even paying something). possibility to make interesting visits in the neighbouroug from the closest cities up to Barcelona (1,5 hour by train).

Lovely hotel

Me and my fiance are just back from a week here yesterday over all a great holiday.

First impressions- upon arrival walking through the front door of the hotel you could smell that the hotel was clean, the reception was almost in front of you and check in was smooth.

The room-we asked in advance for a room on an upper level and we're given room 609 a corner room. The room had views of the sea in 2 directions, the pool was below us and views of the hills, because the room was a corner room it had a huge terrace and a window as well as the doors leading out. The room was clean with a proper double bed and a sofa bed no complaints at all we were delighted with the room.

Facilities- The hotel had a spa, gym , outdoor and indoor pools. The spa/gym is up on the 7th floor great views and costs 6 euro per person. We went just the once and to be honest were a little dissapointed the hot tub sauna and steam room were ok there was also a couple of showers but that was pretty much it as far as spa goes quite expensive really for a hot tub, the gym was the dissapointing part the treadmill didn't work on our visit and other than treadmill there were just 2 exercise bikes and weights machine and a cross trainer. Would recommend you visit it before paying for it.

Food- This is the tough part we stayed half board so only breakfast and dinner the breakfast for me was quite dissapointing the first few days at least no boiled eggs, scrambled eggs in sight and the hot food which was there was really greasy. However I asked one of the waiters about getting boiled eggs and sure enough next morning they were there but they were cold ones so I had to peel them an heat them in microwave. Then I asked for scrambled eggs which they happily put 2 eggs in a bowl for me to make them myself. The dinners the first 2 nights we were dissapointed but the themed nights were fantastic so rather than being negative about food choices etc I'd prob say that depending on your own preference you might or might not enjoy the food. Bear in mind this large hotel are trying to cater for Russian, Spanish, German, French and English people English I would say were the minority. Also to mention is that no matter which board you stay drinks are only included with breakfast. Lunch amd dinner drinks are ordered from staff and must be paid for on leaving.

Bar and entertainment - the bar service was always good staff were very friendly, entertainment would either be at the blaucel or the blaumar was just the usual flamenco magic, shows etc.

Staff- we did not come across one member of staff who wasn't lovely. The restaurant staff were fantastic and courteous and happy to help with whatever you wanted you weren't made to feel bad for asking for something that wasn't on the menu. Jesus one of the waiter's stood out for me such a happy friendly face and he arranged my boiled eggs 😊. Bar staff again great service and friendly and the reception staff also friendly.

Overall - I would recommend this hotel other than the couple of days where we didn't enjoy the food the rest of it was flawless. The hotel is in a great location close to the beach pools are good lots of small shops and restaurants nearbye and only a short walk from the main centre of blanes. I would return to this hotel again.

A couple of recommendations I have would be more healthier options for breakfast and dinners ie less oil in the foods, and excursion information in the rooms or more visible we didn't go any excursions because we weren't really sure what there was. Perhaps an excursion board in all languages would be helpful and some local transport information ie buses.

Room is lovely with beautiful bathroom and constant hot water.
Loads of space to move about. The restaurant has a great selection of food although servicing 2 hotels is more like a glorified works canteen. The pool is constantly overcrowded with children but not a problem as the shingled beach which is very steep and is tricky to get in and out off the sea is only a couple of minutes walk. The bar lounge area is poorly laid out with not a lot going on. never had a drink in it once.
in the evenings we went the 20 minute walk into Blanes to find good entertainment.
Overall the hotel was fine and never unpleasant but was not a great 4star. The restaurant andl lounge area was all a bit of a let down and as it is a good walk from Blanes the lounge had nothing to offer in the evenings lacking ambience and adult entertainment.

Pleasant hotel but not quite worthy of 4 stars

The Blaucel is an attractive 7 floor hotel within 2 mins walk of a shingle beach and approx 20 mins walk into Blanes centre. It's sister hotel the Blaumar is directly across the road and can be accessed via an underpass in the hotel.
Guests are free to use the facilities of either hotel inc. pools and dining rooms.

We booked 2 family rooms via "On the Beach". The cost was fairly reasonable for half board during school holidays.
Check in was very efficient and we found the receptionist to be very friendly.

Rooms
Style a little dated but the rooms were clean. 2 single beds had been pushed together, the matresses were extremely hard and we had to request additional pillows as only 1 each was supplied.
The sofa bed had been made up for our use and as a result this did reduce the space in the room quite considerably. However, the sofa bed was infact quite comfortable.
Very spacious wardrobe with plenty of shelves and a safe which cost €22 to hire for a week!! I expect a 4 star hotel to provide this facility at no additional cost.
Reasonable size tv with a couple of English speaking news channels.
The room guide advises you can pay for wifi services but it is not reasonably priced and again is a standard expectation of a 4 star hotel.
The balcony was a nice size but only 2 chairs were provided. The lower floors will not provide much of a view but 4th floor up at the back of the hotel should provide a lovely sea view.
Bathroom was modern and spacious with a shower which looked as though it would disappoint but was actually extremely powerful with a great consistent temperature.
A hairdryer was supplied along with a generous supply of shampoo, shower gel and mini soaps. The towels were a little thin but a reasonable size. The room was cleaned almost every day.

Meals
Meals are buffet style with breakfast served between 7.30 and 10.00 providing something for everyone. Eggs cooked to order, pastries, cheeses, cooked meats, yoghurts, sausages, bacon. Unfortunately we found often the hot options to be luke warm at best which was a real shame.
Some mornings cava was available which made a lovely bucks fizz!!
Fruit juice (from concentrates), water and hot beverages are available from machines. There is a toaster but it is so very slow.

Dinner
There are 2 dinner services with the first starting at 19.30 you must present your dining card but can dine at either the Blaucel or Blaumar.
Dress code is very relaxed, just no swimwear allowed.
Most nights were themed such as Spanish, Italian, Asian but there was still plenty of other choice available. Again we found much of the hot food to be luke warm which really was a pity as it was otherwise tasty. I can't imagine anyone not finding something they would like from such a vast choice. Chocolate fountain night is a massive hit and not just with the children!!!
You do not get any drinks with dinner, not even water! A waiter will take your order for drinks once you are seated and you can pay at the end of your meal or before your stay comes to an end.
Although the restaurant is clean it seems the chairs have been forgotten with most being stained by food spills, they could do with a good scrub!

Entertainment
The bar area is pleasant and leads out to the pool and terrace. Finding a sunbed was never a problem although plenty were "reserved" for much of the day with no-one actually using them.
The bar serves snacks such as pizza, sandwiches and ice creams. Prices are not too expensive but a very small glass of soft drink will set you back €2 which is quite steep for the quantity.
The Blaucel has a lovely childrens paddling pool and a larger pool which has a shallow area too. There is also a good sized indoor pool. The pool at the Blaumar is not really suited to young children and is much deeper.
Evening entertainment consists of the fairly standard childrens disco followed by parrot and flamenco shows.
If you are looking for a lively hotel atmosphere this may not quite do it for you.

The beach at Blanes shelves quite abruptly making it unsuitable for young children to paddle without very close supervision. It is coarse shingle but very attractive with a promenade running all the way to the town centre. There are water sport hire huts and boat trip stalls dotted along the way but there is no attempt to hard sell.
Next to the hotel is a small childrens play park with crazy golf which only seems to open in the evening. There are plenty of souvenir shops and small supermarkets nearby as well as restaurants and bars.

You can take a taxi from the hotel to Blanes train station for approx €10 from there a return trip to Barcelona costs less than €13 and takes around 1.5 hrs.

We were disappointed to be told by a rather abrupt receptionist that we would not be able to get a light breakfast on the morning of our departure. We were leaving at 7.10am and she told us in no uncertain terms that the restaurant did not open until 7.30!!
The other receptionist (who was always helpful and cheerful & a credit to the hotel) later advised us that it absolutely should be possible and just to ask when we came down in the morning.
Given the hotel offers picnic lunches how difficult can it be to provide a carton of juice and a pastry breakfast to guests with early starts? The attitude of the abrupt receptionist was the only unpleasant experience we encountered on our holiday.

This could be a great 4 star hotel with a bit more attention to detail - serve hot food HOT, clean up the dining chairs, modern bed linen would bring the bedrooms upto par with the bathrooms, stop charging for room safes, fridges and wi-fi and ensure that the receptionist in question understands the value of great customer service just as her colleague does!!!

We would never say never to returning to Blanes and the Blaucel but there are lots of other places to explore before we consider revisiting.

Rubbing Salt into the Wounds.

We were unfortunate victims of the bankruptcy of Lowcostholidays. We had booked our holiday well in advance, only to find out a week before that our travel agency had entered administration. Our hotel booking had not yet been payed for and our holiday was in jeopardy.

After contacting the hotel by email, they confirmed that the travel agency had cancelled our reservation. However with it being so short notice, we expected to still be able to go to the hotel, albeit having to pay again for the hotel.

However Blaucel had moved quickly to sell our previously reserved room without giving us any opportunity to keep our reservation. This was incredibly disappointing and has left us in a nightmare situation, a few days before we are due to fly out. We feel like this was incredibly poor and inconsiderate customer service with a complete lack of sympathy.

So in reference to the title, Lowcostholidays wounded our summer plans and Blaucel painfully rubbed salt into them. Devastating.
