What People are saying
Nice - but the hospitality was missing
luv2travel50Londonon 05/11/2017 14:58We stayed at the Hotel Boucan Canot as part of our holiday to Mauritius and Reunion. We wanted to go to Reunion as my husband is French fluent and knew of the island from his time living in France. We had originally spent 4 days in Mauritius where the people are beyond nice - they smile constantly and always make you feel welcome and special. Once arriving in Reunion we knew we were back in Europe and the warm hospitality was gone. Our arrival at the hotel was met with nonchalance and we did not get the impression that our needs were uppermost on their list.
The hotel is located on an amazing spot and the views from the rooms and common areas are sensational. The rooms are dated and definitely need refurbishment but that was probably more apparent to us because we had just come from a 5 star hotel so it is probably not fair of me to compare. I had already prepared myself for this so was not overly bothered - the hotel was not why we had come to Reunion - the volcanic history both past and present was and that did not disappoint. Whilst there you must book a day tour of the volcanoes - it is brilliant!
A true highlight at the hotel for us was watching the whales out at sea from our balcony. On one rainy afternoon we walked down the beach and were privileged to watch the whales jumping and swimming probably only 150 metres away. My only regret is that we did not have the camera but we can rely on our wonderful memories.
Breakfast was a basic affair - and watch out for the birds, they will attack your plate the minute your back is turned. We did have dinner one night at La Table. The food was wonderful - we really did enjoy it.
When investigating hotels on the island I did not find the posh hotels found on Mauritius but felt that the Boucan Canot would easily suit our needs for 3 nights. It did and I would recommend it if like us the hotel was not your main reason for being there.
INCONSISTENT HOTEL - WITH MORE ATTENTION TO DETAIL THIS COULD BE A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL IN A EXCELLENT POSITION
TheHotelGuru10on 27/10/2017 06:38This hotel is situated on a little point into the ocean & most of the rooms are right on the beach so you wake up to amazing views. The rooms are good & a good size with nice decor.
This hotel faces onto the main beach which now has extra shark nets & patrols. There is a good very sociable vibe on the beach & the 5 or so little restaurants right on the beach & this is the social mecca of this area as most of the villages on the island are quite isolated.
However this hotel was inconsistent in it's quality with really nice room decor but with the restaurant food being inconsistent. Some days good, others not great.
The public lounge was good but it still did not feel amazing & I prefered the St Alexis to this hotel because of those inconsistencies.
It was almost impossible to communicate with the staff as few spoke English & even with my broken French I battled to communicate even the basics with the staff. We nearly missed our flight because taxis are few & far in between during peak season & we could not understand or communicate with the hotels reception so we were just left to miss our flight.
You must rent a car on the island or you will battle to get around.
If it was not for one of the ladies of the staff who at 4 am in the morning on New Years Day took us to the airport 45 minutes drive on the other side of the island away IN HER OWN CAR!!, we would have missed out flight & been stuck for days as it was peak season. INCROYABLE MADAME! MERCI BEAUCOUP DU FOND DE MON COEUR POUR VOTRE GESTE !
There was not enough shade at the pool & guests were fighting over umbrellas because December is hot outside.
We had a nice stay at this hotel but it was not as flawless as the St Alexis or the Hotel Lux.
The OWNERS of this hotel need to make the stay here more consistent so that you can give the hotel a solid all-round rating which I cannot do at the moment.
Fantastic stay
Alessia Pon 11/10/2017 14:56After a few days of intense hiking throughout Reunion Island, we decided to unwind at this gorgeous hotel for three nights. We had a wonderful time, everything was perfect. Our room was cozy and clean, and the hotel is extremely well kept and intimate (I believe there are only 40 rooms). The breakfast buffet is very good and offers a wide range of fresh food. The pool space is also very nice and much appreciated, as the beautiful Boucan Canot beach experienced several shark attacks in the past (even though you will still see people getting into the water !) . We also treated ourselves to a relaxing massage for two at sunset, held at a small bungalow in front of the ocean, which was an amazing experience that we definitely recommend. The service was of a very high level, we were quite surprised to see how professional the hotel staff were, given their overall young age! Well done to the Hotel Manager on having such a young and dedicated team. We will be back in the future for sure.
Location is awesome!
jasbron 26/08/2017 07:49We were in a Senior Suite so a good start. Whale watched from our two balconies for two days! Jacuzzi on one of them was great (though you need a PHD to operate it! Large beautiful rooms though the bathroom was a little outdated. Having said that, the shower itself was very good. (Large rain head and three side jets) The service was a little up and down though that seems to be typical of the island (maybe it was the language barrier.) We will stay again!!
Great location, nice staff but old hotel
FCATWon 16/08/2017 21:08The location of that hotel was amazing... ! The hotel itself is rather old and could definitely use some refurbishment to reach the standard of luxury hotels. The pool is great, especially for the sunset views. The restaurant was good with a nice staff but it closed really early (be careful!). This hotel is a great one to stay if you are visiting Boucan Canot, however don't expect the service or standard of a luxury hotel.
