What People are saying

Welcome to the party!

naturalgrass on 21/11/2017 03:17

We got booked at this resort through a "mystery deal" knowing Breathless was a potential resort out of 4 possibilities. It's highly rated here on TA and I read tons and tons of reviews and kind of knew what to expect. So nothing we experienced during our trip was a surprise.

"Welcome to the party" were the first words out of the mouth of our check-in person and that was the theme that continued the entire week. My wife and I are in our 40's and love to have a good time but the techno music, dance party, foam filled pools got to us by the end of the trip. Dont get me wrong; we enjoyed our stay. That said, we would probably steer clear of the Breathless resorts in the future. We travelled with a couple in their early 30's. When there were DJ's at breakfast in chefs hats, it was even too much for them!

The absolute best part about the resort was the hard working staff. From housekeeping to servers to bartenders to cocktail waitresses everyone was fantastic! Virgillio, Fausto (numero uno y numero dos), Abraham, Estralin, Hely, Jose and many others were all awesome our entire stay. The staff made the trip!

Food was good but having stayed at Secrets, Riu Palace and other restorts of this level in the past, i would say its not up to standard. I also would have liked to have a non-buffet option for lunch but you only had that option if you upgraded to Xhale club. The French resturant was our favorite for dinner and the hibatchi grill was fun. Breakfast was always good but overall we just thought the food to be a notch below other resorts of this quality.

The beach was beautiful but don't expect crystal clear water in this area of Punta Cana. There are rocky areas in the water so just pay attention to where everyone is swimming and get in there. There are three total pools of which two had swim up bars. I generally try to avoid the pools with swim up bars. Mainly because people who sit in them and drink all day never get out if you know what I mean! That was almost impossible so I just had to deal with it. Rooms were nice with comfy beds. Our housekeeping service was great and our mini fridge was always stocked. Guest services called multiple times to see how our stay was going and I really appreciated that. Timeshare salsemen were thick every morning on the way to breakfast. After a couple days of answering no to "did you get your coupons?" they started to recognize us and left us alone. Unless you want to buy a timeshare, don't fall for the "free coupon" sales.

The nighttime entertainment was good overall. They did their best to get everyone involved in the shows. Drinks were good; just ask for the alcohol you want. That doesn't mean if you ask for absolut your always going to get it at every bar. Absolut at the pool bar tasted much different than at the lobby bar. Brugal rum is your best bet if you want quality liquor regardless of where you're at. We always enjoyed the pop-up bar in the lobby. I wish I remebered that bartenders name as he always worked hard and poured a great drink. Passion fruit mojitos and caipirinas were a 10! We had wine and champagne throughout the trip (the free kind, not the stuff you have to pay for) and would call it drinkable. It's not as bad as some reviews claim but far from great!

We had a good time, met some cool people and had great service. The weather and ocean were great. We'll be back to Punta Cana but will probably choose another resort next time. Breathless "welcomed us to the party" but the party was just too much for us!

Breathless Saved Our Vacation

After checking out of a local resort 6 days early we checked into Breathless and upgraded to the X Hale club.
Everything about our experience was super magnifico! Having access to the clubhouse and private pools was very nice and allowed us to enjoy some quiet space away from the fun factory around the main pools.
The X Hale private butler thing is a little over rated. Our guy showed us to our room we asked for some specific drinks in our room (a couple times) and we never got them. My wife also told him it was our 20th Anniversary and he replied oh I need to know that and he never did anything to acknowledge it. He was basically a Casper (we never seen him).
The food and service was excellent and the resort was spotlessly clean.
If you can afford the X Hale club take the upgrade being closer to the ocean and the private pool made all the difference.

The resort is very lush and tropical with excellent choices of restaurants to choose from. The Asian hibachi/sushi restaurant, Silk City, was probably our favorite. You will need to make a reservation to sit at the hibachi table or else you will be eating sushi off the menu, which was still quite tasty. The pools are amazing, with two main pools that are equipped with swim up bars, along with smaller "lazy river" type pools that run parallel with the rooms. They are on both sides of the accommodation buildings and are great for "down time". The rooms are spacious with large king size beds and walk in showers with rain heads, mini bar and wi-fi. They could use a little updating here and there, but otherwise excellent. The staff are awesome, and probably some of the most friendly people I have met. Kelvin, Michael, Willy and Francesco made our vacation something we will never forget. They remembered our names, what we liked and even taught me a little Spanish. "A big shout out to you all!!" The beach is clean and groomed with plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas. This is really a fantastic resort. I would definitely stay at Breathless again

This trip was the best resort we had ever
visited. The staff was the best, ever. Many thanks to Johnny for his help and attention. The manager at the sunset grill, valentine was outrageous in his attention and helpfulness to us. Jonathan our order taker and anything else we needed was outstanding. We missed a breakfast, as we had chosen family members who invited us to the penthouse for breakfast. The crew headed by Johnny looked for us at our favorite places and our room to see if all was ok. Now that’s a great service.
The food was excellent. We ate only once at the buffet, as we were in the xhale category and the grill was special for exhale only during breakfast and lunch.
Special mention to Eli’s, the only female vip host, who helped me find a killer electronic fly shatter, lol.

Beautiful resort

We just returned from a week long stay at Breathless. We were there as part of a large group for a music festival. Our group were the only guests of the resort at the time so some things may not be the same as if you were visiting on your own. I'll try to summarize the positives and negatives about the resort, staff, etc.

Pros: First, I have to say the grounds of the place are really beautiful. It is very clean and well maintained and the walkways and surrounding outdoor areas are very picturesque. The staff absolutely went out of their way to accommodate us. If your drink was getting low, servers would come right over and ask if you wanted another one. We didn't meet any staff member who was rude. They bent over backwards to make sure everyone was having a good time and for the most part were super friendly. We had a swim-up room on the first level that was directly across from one of the swim-up bars. The room was a great location and very convenient to the restaurants and main pool area. Our room was an average size like you would find in most hotels but had a little patio outside with a Jacuzzi, 2 chairs, a small table, and 2 lounge chairs which looked out on the swim-up area. There is a wide choice of restaurants so most people will find something to their liking.

We also visited Now Onyx, which is the sister resort next door. You could walk but we were taken there by a golf cart which we picked up right out in front of the hotel. We actually went to Onyx because we wanted to watch an NFL game and they had a sports bar there, which Breathless didn't. Onyx looked similar to Breathless but it seemed like their restaurant selection was better. They do allow kids there while Breathless is an adults only resort but the kids don't bother us and we enjoyed it over there. We didn't have time to check out a lot of the facilities at Onyx but it's nice to have the option to go there as well.

The pools at Breathless were great. They have many to choose from and the only time the main pool was overcrowded was if there was a live band playing or when they had the foam party, which was a lot of fun. When we were there, they had constant music at the main pool which we really liked but if you wanted to go to a quieter place, there were other options.

I thought the best food was at Culinaria. We had the fillet there 3 nights and it was very good. Spoon's buffet was very popular, especially for breakfast, and had a wide selection of items. The service in all the restaurants was very good and the servers were attentive and friendly.

Cons: My main complaint is the lighting. Everywhere you go is very dimly lit, from the hallways, outside walkways, restaurants and rooms. Several times I saw people with their phones trying to light up the menu in restaurants so they could see it. The outdoor walkways are very pretty at night but very dark. You really need to watch where you're going. I've never seen anyplace where every area is so dim.

While the outside grounds are just beautiful, the corridors where the rooms are located were industrial and cold looking. The floors are all made of tile which cause it to have an echo and to be noisy. If we were in our room and people were coming down the hall, it was really loud. Sometimes it would only be two or three people but sounded like a whole group. I was woken up a few times in the night with people talking, laughing, etc., when they passed by in the hall. The area where the rooms are doesn't appear to be well insulated at all as far as sound. As we had read in many reviews, our room smelled very musty when we walked in. We actually went to the front desk to request another room and they did take us to a room on the upper level that smelled somewhat better but we didn't like the location so we stayed with the original room because they said they could send someone from housekeeping who would know how to fix the smell. When she showed up, she didn't speak a word of English so it was hard to get her to understand what the problem was and they apparently didn't tell her. They eventually sent someone else who sprayed something on the air conditioning vent and that did help a lot. The smell sort of came back after a few days but not as strong. Everything in the room was damp, including the clothes hanging in the closet. We had to wash everything when we got home, even clothes that were never worn, because of the musty smell. I don't know if it's like this at any island you would visit in the Caribbean or if this is unusual. The bathroom was a good size but if you need privacy, it would be a problem. The doors to the bathroom and to where the toilet is located are just plastic doors that swing open. They do not actually close and there are no locks. The bathroom has a shower, no tub, and the shower has a half wall of glass so anyone entering the bathroom while someone is taking a shower can see everything. The bed was really soft, too much so for me, but I think that's better than it being hard as a rock like I've had in some hotels. I thought the pillows were awful. They're almost square like a throw pillow and just not comfortable. The air conditioning in the room can only be adjusted to a certain degree. I think the lowest setting was 70 or 72 degrees so the room seemed pretty warm. There was a ceiling fan so we turned that on and it did help in the area by the beds. For women particularly, the lighting in the bathroom is horrible. I went outside on the patio to put makeup on.

The beach area is nice and the water was pretty but when we tried to take a walk down the beach, there were so many vendors approaching us, some of them fairly aggressive, that we ended up turning around after a short walk and returning to our resort.

There was a good variety of restaurants but the food was not the greatest. I would rate the food overall as 3 out of 5 and I'm not very fussy about food.

All in all, this is a very nice resort and we had a good time. I don't think we would have liked it as well if we had not been there for the music event because we like to stay busy and have entertainment options at night, which we did have with our group day and night. Without that, it seems like it would be pretty low-key, although there might be other choices with the ability to access Now Onyx as well.
