Nice on the Outside, But Below Our Expectations

I have been to the hotel years ago for a business meeting and had a good impression (four out od five). So I have come for a prolongued weekend now, having relatively high expectations. All three parking facilities (hotel and public open air, garage at the 4 Opatijska Cvijeta hotel) take some walking, so you need to stop right on the busy main street for unloading, and then park. Check-in was smooth, reception crew the best part of the hotel. Room rather small, lovely sea view from a small balcony (not made for those with vertigo). Bathroom big enough for the hotel classification (4 stars). Cleaning up to the standard.

However, buffet breakfast is a serious disappointment befitting a lowly three star hotel. Poor choice of food, plates often empty or nearly empty, artificial juices, appalling self-service coffee from large jugs. Clearly understaffed – if one of the two waiters (solely table cleaners, actually) decides to go for a cigarette break, the other one is lost. So several tables are left in disarray till 10 AM (closing time), they are not particularly happy to make one for you when you come after nine. At ten sharp (!) they close down the doors to buffet area, if you are late a minute, you get nothing at all. Extremely poor experience.

On day one we tried to get a cappuccino after such poor breakfast and went down to the hotel caffeteria. We waited on the terrace for quarter of an hour, but the waiter was so busy fixing a new beer barrel at the bar that we lost hope and went elsewhere. Want a glass of sparkling wine? The only choice is a Martini Asti Spumante… No go.

There is nothing at all you can do in this otherwise nice old hotel (refurbished a decade ago), also the nearest beach (payable!) is a several minutes walk down the park below the hotel. I would thus expect at least some serious efforts in the F&B direction. Somehow, the owners and director seem to disagree with me here…

Located overlooking a park a short distance from seafront which is easily accessible. An older hotel that is a bit dated in some respects. Bed was comfortable and breakfasts were more than adequate. Nothing special but a good base for the area.

Standing very grand at the top of the hill

Yes, if you arrive by bus you will need to drag the bags up the hill in hot weather but the reward that awaits is a beautiful old building with very high, thick (quiet) walls, double glazing (every house should have) and air conditioning. Entrance is large, staff are very efficient and helpful and there is a reasonably sized lift to your floor. A well stocked buffet breakfast is in a huge dining hall on the first floor. We were on the 5th floor but had no view and a small room. A/C worked well and could set low fan. at the front street side is a (coffee, cakes, drinks) cafe and bar inside and outside. They specialize in sheesha (fruit flavoured smoking) pipes. (Not a smoker but they smell heaps better than the cigarette smoke we suffered in restaurants all over Croatia.)

In need of renovation

We stayed at this hotel for 2nights as part of a Titan tour. The outside of the building looks very grand, and the public areas look quite nice, but the reception area needs is quite sparse. The room we had was very drab and dreary, and the carpet so worn that the pattern had disappeared in the middle of the room. Just a duvet cover for the bed, with no duvet inside, and the towels were very thin and worn. The room was in much need of renovation and certainly not what you expect for a 4star hotel. Breakfast was just about adequate, but staff couldn't cope with the numbers and frequently ran out of tea cups and some food items. Dinner was a buffet, comprising chicken or fish, both of which were cold and very overcooked. The choice of vegetables was very limited and there was not enough food to go round, so those coming to dinner late had very little food left and this was not good after a 4.50 start from Gatwick The choice of starter and dessert was also limited.Very few other people ate In the restaurant, as there are some lovely restaurants only a few minutes walk down the street, serving much better food. Our stay was quite disappointing although the hotel is in a good location and has the potential to be much better.

Reception and roomservice

I spent 17 nights in the bristol hotel. It is located in the central of opatija, 5 minutes to the Bevanda lido beach resort. Bojan and his colleague had always been extremely helpful and warmhearted- the same with maria and stela from the kitchen staff. Also the ladies doing the cleaning up from the room service always very friendly. BUT: the level from the hotel is never a 4 ****. There are fungus mushrooms in the bathroom , a very old moquette in the rooms, TV did not march on the 3rd floor and no excuse from the management. The bed and mattress are very good. The rooms towards the main road are very noisy. Very professionell and nice are silvia and monika from the wellness section. When i slipped in front of the reception because of spilled water puddle dripping down from the AC and smashed a glass tray which was not made of security glass and was not fixed properly, siniša and bojan were very very 😱 concerned and sweet - but i could have hurt myself seriously 😒 . I don't understand how the management can handle such dangerous equipment.
