What a Shame

HappyBeach01on 25/08/2016 13:37

Where do I start?, I wouldn’t normally like to give a ‘bad’ review, but I guess this is just an ‘honest’ review! - sorry it could be a long one.....
I have wanted to stay at this hotel for a long time, and at last the opportunity arose. The castle and grounds look so beautiful, (possible wedding venue?) so I hoped that the hotel was going to fulfil the expectations, well that’s where it all ground to a halt!
We parked and walked into reception to see if there was somewhere a bit closer to bring the car, so we could offload our suitcases, as it was a little bit of a walk over lovely cobblestones, there was a car park for several cars just outside reception but was told this was only for disabled drivers, (which later I see other people using) understandably due to the cobblestones at the other entrance, anyway, Check in was a bit of a grim affair, the lady was very sour, and we were not given the usual check in hotel information, so thought perhaps there would be a good information folder in the room, anyway, basically ‘sign here’ (no please, even in German!) and “your room is upstairs then along the corridor and upstairs again”…. Hhhmm, not looking good with 2 big suitcases! Anyway we arrived at our attic room, (didn’t book an attic room, especially when OH is over 6ft!) room was sweltering (admittedly it was very warm weather at this time) but the room was stifling. It had 1 fan, which of course just circulated the hot air, but at least it was something, because the 2 teeny windows that we had in the room did not help at all. As I mentioned it was an attic room, beams cutting into half the room size, so certainly couldn’t walk around the room standing up! Bathroom very clean (good!) but TINY . Then noticed a door, oohhh , perhaps we’ve got more space than first expected, but no, it was the cleaners storeroom! Cleaning fluids, rags, buckets etc. Bit bizarre, as there was no lock on the door, good if I wanted to do my own cleaning (!) but not good for anyone to come into our room from that side! Went straight down to reception to ask them for the door to be locked. “ok” was the reply, - no sorry, or anything… We then left to go and meet up with family, hoping all will be better when we return, so we handed in our key (which we normally do if staying in smaller hotels, plus the key fob was so big, it wouldn’t fit in my bag!)
Upon our return, we rung the bell at the unattended reception, and had to wait, and wait for a staff member so we could get our room key. This different receptionist was ruder than the last one, seemed to ‘tut’ as if we had upset her day by just wanting our key! Anyway up to our attic, to find the ‘cleaning room’ door was still unlocked, … OH went back downstairs and explained that we had asked the other receptionist for this door to be locked, she didn’t seem to know anything about it, but assured him “it will be done”. Terrible night sleep, uncomfortable bed, and still sweltering, it was actually cooler in the corridor, but didn’t want to leave our front door open! Next day, same routine, wait for receptionist so we could hand in our key, same sour face. We asked (nicely!) for the wifi code, and she ‘just pointed’ to the wall blackboard which had the wifi code written on it, no speech, just ‘a point’!!. Off out for the day, returned to find there was no car parking spaces, even in the one which was a little walk away, so we had to park down the slope out of the castle grounds and into a public car park area! Then walk up the ‘lovely’ cobblestoned slope (they’re not so lovely anymore when wearing heels!) Back into unattended reception and wait again for room key, decided to have a last drink before going to bed, went to restaurant bar, they had finished restaurant service but bar was still open, but you felt like you had interrupted their staff private bar area, all kitchen staff had finished and met up at the guest bar, I actually don’t have a problem with staff relaxing at the end of their shift but we had to keep trying to get the barmans eye to get another drink as he was too busy with the rest of the staff. Anyway back up to the sweat box (our room!) and yes, the cleaners door had been locked, or was it!, I tried the door, didn’t open, but pushed the door, and they had put 2 cases of water behind the door, what, to stop us getting into it!? This is getting ridiculous!. Next day, out again, this time I’ve kept our key, as I am fed up waiting at reception, are we glad we did, we came back late, and the main front door was locked! They lock the front door (can remember now what time, think its 11pm?) but had anyone told us this….NO!! we did have a front door key on with our room key, but as previously stated it was just ‘lucky’ that we had taken the key with us this time! Thank goodness we were checking out tomorrow.
Check out the next day was met with the usual miserable receptionists , we asked for our bill, and not once were we asked if we had enjoyed our stay, or any conversation at all.
Incidentally, there was no information folder in the room, regarding the hotel, castle or the beautiful area, which seems ridiculous if they want to either increase their revenue by advertising their restaurant or bar etc, or by simply informing their guests of the history of the castle and village. Needless to say we will never stay here again (it was not a cheap long weekend!) and certainly not as a wedding venue!
WHAT A SHAME!!!... I thought this was a dream destination!

Do your best to stay away

The good-bye by the front office lady says it all: her answer to my "so" was "now then", no question as to how our stay in the hotel was or how we liked the place.
The worst experience is the restaurant - although the quality of the food can be recommended, the staff is uninterested to serve you, expect a closing in front of your nose already just after seven.
The hotel in a castle is in itself a really nice spot, the rooms are ok and appropriate value.
Yet the overall experience is spoilt by the staff that is simply unbearable, with the exception of the head housekeeper who was the sunshine of the place.

No, no, no.

It's one thing to have a moderate quality hotel, but it is quite another to feel unwelcome and unwanted. We got the feeling that we were interrupting the staff, that our questions were not appreciated, that it was even trouble to hold onto our key if we went out. I had to ask for SOAP in our room 3 times over the course of 2 days before we got it. The quality of the room we were in was not at all reflective of the picture we had seen (room 8). We asked to changed rooms, but were told we could not because they were all full. We did not get the feeling they were full. I told the reception 3 times that I had serious dietary restrictions - but they never told the kitchen. The maid service did not come one day and did a poor job on the other day. We left a day early because it would be more comfortable at home. We were really disappointed and would never, ever recommend this place. (The kitchen, though, was really great - excellent service, good food - must be said.)

Step back in time .

Always a pleasure to stay ,but make sure you are happy with your room .The staff can't do enough .The breakfast is all you could want for and served in a pleasant environment by friendly staff who do not let the language barriers get in the way .Also worth a stroll through the town .

A very nice hotel

The service was very good. We wanted a quiet room, and were shown 3 rooms to choose from. The rooms very spacious and the rooms toward the courtyard had a great view. The rooms are dark, but that is to be expected in a 600 year old castle. Our child and dog were also welcome.
The only negative points were that the carpets in the rooms are really ugly. Clean, but ugly. The bathrooms are all clean and look freshly renovated, but are tiny!! Finally, we were only told at check-out that our dog cost €8 a night. Nothing to stop us from staying again, but it might put some off.
The restaurant was fantastic, but is only open till 9pm.
