What People are saying
Because there is no "zero star" rating...
fshwmnon 06/02/2015 13:33This is a "retro review" from several years ago, not meant to add to the negativity, but to clarify what type of place it is.
We are NOT high maintenance travelers, and were looking so forward to being here for the week and in no way expected a hotel experience. However, when we got there, and were sent to our cabana via the twisted path dotted with empty beer cans and trash, we walked in to a cabana that was one of many in a matrix. The water was not on, and the attendant turned it on for us. We went in, exhausted from the trip and waiting to rest. The cabana "walls" had so much space between them, anyone could see through. (And I am definitely NOT a nudist.) There was standing water on the floor, and the cabana was so small you had to turn sideways to get around the bed. That sinking feeling set in. So we didn't unpack but walked around, then went to the desk and asked for the cabana in the pics on their website. It wasn't available, as that was for the owner only. So we said we wanted our money back. "No," was the answer we received. I know why they say "non refundable." They wouldn't make any money because everyone would ask for a refund. We checked out anyway, and luckily had paid with American Express, so after somewhat of a fight we did get our refund. We went somewhere within a mile of CC and had a wonderful wonderful stay.
So the bottom line is, if you like to stay in somewhat of a semi-clean, drug induced, mosquito bitten haze and don't need ANY amenities, then the way CC was at the time of our travel is for you. If not, you'll want to find somewhere else. I realize the place is under different ownership now. Just thoroughly check it out and pay with American Express if you can. We stayed in Sept but NOT of 2014.
Tulum area is best place!
aisputeon 11/08/2014 02:15We're having a honeymoon week on this hotel @ we are very nappy .It's been low season time and no people around, but we felt secure @ safety!
Just 5 minute to the centers of TULUM cost 50 Pecos. I will recommended this place for the people whose wants be out off routines , noise, people, TV'S JUST U AND CARIBBEAN SEA !
Copal/Azulik a new look
RalphandJanon 06/02/2014 15:32My wife and I were at Copal three years ago. It was at a time of some major transsion for the resort. But we fell in love with the simplicity of the place. No electric, was great the candles were very romantic . We walked to town for food. We were there for 5 days. We love the fact that it was clothing optional as well. Sunning and swimming naked was like heaven.
So this year we returned and stayed the first two nights in a waterfront cabana in the Copal section. It was delightful as before, but we noticed that there were several new units on the beach (Azulik) so for the next three nights we moved there. Much more spacious, a qurky floor plan with the toilet near the entry and not close to the sink, but other than that it was great. The beach is still clothing optional and to be perfectly honest we might not have come if it weren't. The nudity for us at least seems so right in this simple back to nature resort. The staff is helpful and responsive. The food in town is really world class. And if to go further south there are even more places to eat. Live music is everywhere. Very likely we will return next year, for more food sun and fun..still a very romantic place. Oh BTW I am an Art Consultant and I was pleased to discover so many of the other guests were in the arts as well, it made the stay that much more interesting.
Nostalgic Review
Joyous56on 20/01/2014 04:05This is not a current review, but one reflective of our experience a long time ago.
My experience at Cabanas Cobal dates back 7 years. The cabana's were clean, well kept, and the sea view cabanas had marvelous views of the water, with sea breezes flowing through. The restaurant was open at that time, and we had some great breakfasts....Mexican favorites such as chilaquiles...with mimosas or local juices for a beverage.
The dinners were great, and the restaurant had many guests....traditional Mexican dishes were served and they were delicious! We always left full and satisfied, and felt we got our money's worth.
The service was great.... we were escorted to our cabana, it was checked for our satisfaction...it was clean and checked to make sure we had plenty of clean water and candles. The sheets and towels were clean, with sculptured towels on the bed. We felt secure and never had a second thought about crawling into our beds and falling asleep to the sea breeze.
We woke up the next morning to the sunrise. We had an excellent breakfast when we were ready for it. Later, we found a spot underneath a palapa....with nice lounge chairs, shade, and a small table.
The beach cafe served drinks and small snacks or casual lunches.....any mixed beverage you would want...Martguerita, Tequila Sunrise, 7&7...whatever....with Nachos, Ceviche...anything you'd want.
When we visited in 2007, it was a dream come true....no pressure, totally eco-friendly, a great value, views and a beach to kill for, great food and beverages, wonderfully accommodating service, well kept beach and other facilities....
Alas, this Cobanas Copal exists no more. We were fortunate to be there on the cusp of their splendor. From the reviews I've read recently, please do not be deceived by their web site into thinking they are the same as they were 5 or 6 years ago...they are not. You will be told a lot about what they have to offer, but please be careful...they are not delivering what they offer.
I'm so sad to say these things, because our experience at Cabanas Cobal was so life changing. Since that time, the ownership has changed, and their lease has run out. They are not the same as they were back then.
I wish you could have experie3nced what we did...and I hope my review might inspire someone to resurrect Cabanas Copal as it it was. However, it might not have been financially viable, and the lease aspect might not be resolvable.
In any case....I wanted people to know what Cabanas Copal was like at it's best.
Complete rip off.
Francisco Lon 03/01/2014 06:05In the first place, the website does not have enough photos of the cabins, and the ones they have are from the one big cabin. So don't get too excited about your room if you are not staying in that one.
My cabin, the king seaview, didn't have a door for the bathroom, so it wasn't the most romantic experience.
The plants in front of the cabin completely ruin the view from the chairs. Also the plants have some kind of plague.
The cabin is not well ventilated unless the door is permanently open. There are several kinds of bugs and insects and absolutely nothing to stop them comming in the room.
The first day the towels were dirty.
The bed was very old, squeaky and uncomfortable.
There's no direct way to the beach but thru the big more expensive brother azulik.
I felt ripped off. It is expensive considering that there are very big hotels that give you a lot more for the money.
A few years ago I stayed in the baby brother hotel Zahra. It was way better than Cabañas Copal. Regrettably it no longer exists.
On the good side, personnel is very kind and diligent.
