Phew - disaster averted

A number of weeks ago I called the Cain to book a room - my sister's 50th birthday party was being held just across the road and so it was a great location for us (as well as it being a lovely 17th-century coaching inn). So, when we turned up to check in, my understanding was that there was a room booked and available for us and our two dogs (as it is dog-friendly despite one booking site saying that it isn't). Hmmm - there was no booking made in my name for that night and they were fully-booked. Panic set in as my husband had driven 200+ miles from London that morning and was looking forward to hanging up the car-keys for the night and settling down to a beer or two. We were shown as having booked a room for the previous weekend but I was sure that my booking had been made for this weekend. The chap we spoke to at reception called the owner just to verify the booking that we had said we'd made. We were then shown an email confirming that I had actually booked our room for the previous weekend. Oops - this was clearly my fault. We could see the evening being ruined because of my error as we realised that we'd have to find somewhere else that wasn't necessarily within walking distance plus we had the added hassle of finding somewhere nearby that was dog-friendly. After the chap spoke to the owner again, he explained that they did have a room available but that it was not usually allocated to guests. We decided to take a look and our impression was that the room was basic but clean and tidy and was perfectly acceptable for a one-night stay - especially when you thought you would be up a creek without a paddle. It turns out that the room would have been used by the owner of the Cain who was in charge of cooking our breakfast the next morning. He ended up sleeping on the store-room floor! Of course, we felt very bad about our mistake but, the whole issue was dealt with calmly and with some humour to boot. So I can't comment on the standard of the guest rooms but I can say that the breakfast was delicious and that the fresh coffee was plentiful (I must have refilled about 5-6 times!). I can also say that the service we received was excellent. Of course, my husband had great delight in letting everybody know about my sheer stupidity and that, clearly, I cannot be trusted to make any future bookings as I might choose the wrong date, the wrong hotel, perhaps the wrong city, or, maybe even the wrong country! Anyway, the party was very good and those five cups of strong black coffee did the trick.

Quirky

Don't expect the Ritz and you won't be disappointed.
Hotel was fab, due to a mix up we originally had a double bed instead of twin beds, this was all sorted within 15 minutes of arrival and we were swapped with another guest. room 10 was definitely quirky, i've never stayed in a room where your bed is on a slope. ensuite shower was huge and lovely and hot, bedding was blankets not duvet and we had to take one off as too hot at night. Bit noisy outside at night due to no double glazing but due to the age of the hotel there is nothing you can do about it.
breakfast was adequate but the waitress more than made up for that with her personality, always willing to help
We ate there one evening and it was a lovely meal and very reasonably priced
Also the only network available in this area of Wales is EE so i brought a sim specifically for there. The hotel does offer wifi but it didn't work the whole 3 nights we were there

Lovely comfortable hotel and great food

Stayed for 2 nights in huge room with seating area at one end. Old beans and a wonky floor! Just what we were looking for. The evening meals were included in the price and we were amazed to find that everything on the menu was included in the deal and absolutely gorgeous it was too. The welsh lamb is to die for. Would stay again 😊

Pleasant stay

Stayed one night in the family room with our teenage son. The room was old fashioned but clean & very large so we had plenty of space. Beds were comfortable & the bathroom was fine. You had to let the water a little while to come through warm but when you did the shower was adequate. Some of the fixtures were a bit wonky but being an old hotel you do expect things like this.
We found all of the staff very pleasant & ate in the bar in the evening & had a really good meal. Breakfast was good so no complaints.
