I thought it was going to be a disaster! - Read past the negative stuff

Check In - Well check-in didn't go well! We arrived early and had no strong expectation of our room being ready but the front desk staff gave no impression of caring, checking if our room was indeed available, offering a place to change or indeed anything helpful. It was only after we had taken our bags apart in the front lobby that we learned that there was a golf changing room.
Room - When we did get to our room 'newly renovated balcony room' we found it dark, dated and the condition of some of the furnishings was poor. We were assured that the room was renovated 18 months ago but I can only say that someone took a great deal of time to source 1970's style furnishings. Frankly, instead of the front desk insisting that the hotel was full and no room move possible it would have been smarter to have at least appeared to have attempted to meet our needs.
The good news - Other members of staff were indeed very helpful. The manager was attentive and worked hard to recover, he was supported by another lady who looked to anticipate our needs especially when it came to seating our increasingly large party in the dining room. The food quality and service at breakfast and dinner was better than we expected.
The hotel golf course was also very enjoyable, properly maintained and a pleasure to play.
On balance I would recommend others to stay if you have reason to be in the area especially if a round of golf is of interest to you.

Awesome place

A bit out of the way - but great and unique hotel and accommodations. Great staff. Wonderful grounds. Cool golf course.
It's not nearby - but that's part of its charm.
We had the upgraded room at the top and center, with a gorgeous view of the property. The room with the big round window... and for just a bit more, I'd recommend that room. Very large room with a separate 'living room' and about the biggest bathroom I've seen in a hotel room.
Overall, a great place.

Amazing hotel

I would highly recommend anybody to stay at Cally Palace. The manager and staff are amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. Very professional and friendly. Comfortable rooms, amazing views and fantastic golf course with great green staff. We go many times in the year and it feels like going home. Can't recommend it highly enough.

A fine old gentleman

It's hard not to recommend the Cally Palace, the staff are warm and welcoming. The food was excellent and the location is breathtaking. The main rooms in the hotel are lovely, all in all a very positive trip. I do have two slight negatives though. There are no lifts in the building so if like us your room is on the top floor it's along way to take your bag. The bedrooms in the main part of the house are large but dated and could do with a little love.

Great stay

This was our first visit here and we found it to be very pleasant.
We came primarily for a golf break since the course was on-site.
I had read most of the recent reviews on here and we booked a forest wing balcony as they had been modernised recently.
The room was large and quite well appointed. The TV was small but we never had it on. I must admit the room is still classically furnished and although upgraded it is hardly modern. Bed was comfortably and everything worked though so no complaints. There were USB charging points so that was another good point. The weather was beautiful for our three days so the balcony doors were open 24 hours a day.

Hotel tries to keep its elegant charm. Public rooms are well done and the service was first class. Dinner each night was good. They take your dinner order while having an aperitif and you are called through at your appointed time.

Golf course is fantastic for being for hotel guests only. It's not easy and presents a great challenge.
We did manage a swim in the pool. We were the only ones there.

All in all we had a great three night stay and will definitely be back. Hopefully we can try their monthly dinner dance.
