Great cocktails and food
SarMarnion 19/08/2017 13:33I've eaten here several times at varying times of day and the food is always lovely with choices that are a little different from many of more traditional Cotswold restaurants.
The interior is stylish with board games to play and wonderful cocktails.
Great design hotel, stayed in the family bunk room
Ansev_NLon 14/08/2017 20:19Overall I have to agree with most other reviewers and give this hotel 5 stars. We had a wonderful stay in the family room, and it is very commendable that a hotel of this standard doesn't shy away from family rooms.
The family bunk room provides you with a "standard" double room with a little annex that fits three bunk beds, and a TV with xbox. My eldest couldn't wait to use it whenever we were in the room! Overall, for a family of 4 there was very little storage in the room though, and I felt in this respect design came before functionality. There were some empty spaces that contained only a few decorations that looked very stylish, but would be better suited as extra storage. And even with them, there wasn't a lot of storage. I felt that this hotel is more suited for a weekend away, than as part of a longer stay in the UK when you are travelling with lots of luggage.
Also, the bathroom came with shower only where for a family with small kids baths are more practical. Some small touches were missing, like a soap dish (maybe that's just me?). And we didn't get a bath towel per person, again probably because they wouldn't really fit in the very stylish bathroom ;-)
I've read some reviewers posting the family room was noisy, as it is located next to the storage room for the cleaning ladies. While this is true, I don't think they ever started before 7:30 am, and even then we weren't bothered by the sounds. We did on occasion hear something that sounded like a vacuum cleaner, which I suspect was the hand dry cleaner from the restaurants restroom. In general though, we weren't bothered by any of the noises.
Why 5 stars? Simply because aside from these issues we really enjoyed our time here, the breakfast was great, the staff friendly and helpfull, the extra touches as the complimentary mini-bar, Netflix on TV, the xbox etc were all appreciated. Also, when you factor in the lovely breakfast I would say the stay here was very competitively priced!
Would I return? Well, my daughter made me promise we would! Or, alternatively I may need to buy an xbox...
Excellent service stood out
Jo Lon 13/08/2017 16:04A refreshingly well run business whose staff are their best asset. Fantastic services from everyone we encountered.
We really liked the recently renovated property with a high end scandi-style and thoughtfully fitted out room. They've clearly spent a fortune on the building and it works so well.
Our only disappointment was the food at dinner which looked beautiful on the plates but was surprisingly average for taste - the steak really lacked flavour and an over-use of purées which weren't well executed at all. However breakfast was good the next day.
Overall we're delighted to have found a good spot for a weekend escape and will go back I'm sure.
Very good apart from the chicken butter and service charge
janet son 07/08/2017 10:46We were staying at a B+B in Stow on the Wold with friends as it gave us easy access to Blenheim Palace for Countryfile Live. Even though this was mid week we found many of the restaurants were busy and we would need to book in advance. Unable to get in at The Old Butchers we booked at The Old Stocks Inn. The dining room was nicely set out with tables not too close together. Shortly following ordering we were brought bread and told the butter was chicken butter. I put it on my bread and tasted it and did not like the flavour, it tasted of chicken fat, so scraped it off. The bread was good, but I can't really understand why this butter was offered, surely it would be better to flavour the butter with something everyone, including vegetarians, could eat. Apart from that the service and quality of the food was very good. We did not like the fact that the service charge was added. We always tip unless there is a good reason not to and would have done so here.
Cool and quirky, great Birthday and Anniversary break
DanHopon 30/07/2017 12:57We came across the Old Stocks on Facebook. And what a gem it is. Great decor, friendly staff, gorgeous rooms, all well appointed. Our room, No 16, was a house room. It was spacious, and really well equipped, Nespresso machine, Ruark DAB radio, inclusive mini bar, Joes Company Teas and Aromatherapy Associates in the bathroom.
We had dinner there the first night and it was faultless. The other advantage is that within walking distance there are plenty of other restaurants.
Highly recommend... however ... and this is a personal thing ... there were a number of children chasing around the corridors from one of the larger rooms. Didn't ruin the stay, but did detract from the peaceful setting.
But otherwise ... perfect!
