Three college friends and I stayed in Emporia for an ESU alumnae event. Check-in was easy and the staff was friendly and helpful. The room was clean and spacious. Four women had to get ready for a semi-formal dinner and it accommodated us easily. The beds were comfortable and the hotel was quiet. The location is perfect. It's close to Walmart, Hobby Lobby and many restaurant choices. It was a great stay!

Checked in and went straight to my room. Took up my shoes, grabbed the remote and I turned on the TV. As I flipped through the channels I saw something scurry across the floor. I then jumped to my feet and noticed several cockroaches running all over the place. I called the Front Desk to inform them that I was leaving. I grabbed my things and ran out the door. I stopped at the Front Desk to make sure I would not be charged. He claimed the insect were water bugs, as if, I was supposed to say, "OK, false alarm". Looked like cockroaches to me. He said, "Oh I can clean them up for you". How exactly would you do that? After I was ensured that charges would be refunded, I went running to my car. Let's face it, the place is filthy. NEVER AGAIN. I told our Travel Department at work if they ever put me in a Candlewood Suites that I would not check into it.

We spent one night at Candlewood Suites in Emporia, KS midway through a trip of several days in that area. We selected this property because of the availability of free guest laundry and its proximity to some dining and shopping options. The hotel has some age on it, but is well maintained and we were satisfied with our room, although we had booked a King room, they didn’t have that available when we checked in, but our queen was acceptable. The laundry facility is somewhat limited to 2 washers and 2 dryers which seemed to be in demand most of the time, but we were able to take care of what we needed and worked with others who needed the machines so that we all accomplished our chores. This property is a nice option if you are just passing through or spending a few days in the area.

My grandmother and I have stayed off and on at this hotel for several months. I must admit that this NOT a great hotel. The coffee pot has not been functioning for MONTHS. The manager clearly doesn't care about how this place is run. She's snotty and refuses to help anyone other than the standard requirements to hold the Candlewood Suites name. Save your money and go somewhere that cares about their customers.

We selected this hotel because of the mostly positive reviews but were really disappointed in the management. We found roaches in our first floor room and were promptly moved upstairs to the second floor by the evening desk clerk. Everything seemed fine then until the next morning when we discovered that the hotel had managed to run completely out of coffee! The coffee maker in the lobby was broken, and they were completely out of coffee packages for the room. The manager told us we could drive down the road to the pancake house and get coffee there! Not what you want to hear when you're at a suite hotel and expecting to have breakfast in your room. No apology--just get in your car and go get some somewhere else. Why management couldn't go to the grocery store and get a box of coffee "teabags" to tide them over until they could replenish their stock, I don't know. And of course no warning when we checked in so we could go get some ourselves.
I hadn't planned to bring up the roaches again since the move had solved that problem, but because of the cavalier attitude about coffee, I did. "Oh, they're just waterbugs," I was told, "and we've been spraying for them." Guess what? According to pest control websites, "waterbug" is just another name for the oriental cockroach--and the photos on the pest control websites matched what we saw. A roach by any other name...
If you do decide to stay in this hotel, ask for the second floor. Apparently the roaches are only on the first floor--and spraying isn't working very well. And make sure all the essentials are provided. If they can let themselves run out of coffee, they could just as well let themselves run out of soap.
